Masters Of The Air: Introduction Sequence Aircraft
In this video I look at thirteen scenes from the introduction to the series focusing on the aircraft and what information I can gather just from some fleeting glimpses.
EDITS:
1. Nevada is spelled Nevada, not Neveda. I can't spell.
2. Sans Finis is possibly French (Sans Fins) not latin. Meaning everlasting/eternal... just look it up.
3. I say B-17G "MIKE" was delivered January 1943, it should have been "January 1945." I said 1943 a lot talking about all those B-17Fs. That is no excuse to be chronologically inaccurate when the contract year/number "44-..." is right there on the tail and nose. My apologies.
4. TBD

I was a lowly Sp. 5 inthe 244th Avn Vo stationed on Can Tho airfield, 6/69 -6/70. Prior to the Cambodian invasion in 70, pilots volunteered for photo missions in Cambodia; they flew single seat with the instructions that if they were shot down or otherwise ditched, they had to get themselves out as no one was coming in with a Jolly Green Gian or any equivalent. So, I would wonder whether anone else ws flying missiones as a FAC over Cambodia, as that was the end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and the North was not likely to want anyone poking their nose into operations. Then, again, if he was Air Force - who knows. On a rare occasion I would be tasked with driving down to Bien Thuy; and always tried to time it close to lunch as the AF had WAY better chow than Army. Alas, Laos fell, Cambodia fell, and Thailand almost fell, proving the Domino theory to be factual.

You seem to be able to ferret out information really well. I just found out that my father was a "high speed" FAC, a "Stormy" pilot in the F-4. However I can find nothing about Stormy missions on the internet. Any suggestions on where to dig? He died in 1977, and I don't know how to contact anyone who might have flown with him. Dave

Thanks for the video. As an Airman second class I arrived at Danang AB in December 1970 and was assigned to the 20 TASS. I remember hearing the story of a 19 TASS pilot directing MIG aircraft dropping bombs on the NVA. I remember working on the O2A, OV-10, and occasionally the O2B(BS Bomber). We also had M-148 Jeeps with radios. The radio Shop had the radio call sign of Parrot North. The O2s, were Covey. A Cambodian C-47 used to fly into Danang frequently.

I've been to the old Thorpe Abbot airfield (now a farm field) in Norfolk when I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall (the 100th ARW traces its roots to the 100th BG). The old tower is still there with a few support buildings converted into a museum of sorts. You can still make out the taxiways and runways in the farm field. The CGI in this series looks really disappointing. At least the movie Memphis Belle used actual aircraft. Also: I had no idea a B-17 sounded like an F-16 at full bore. 😆

The portrayal of the 100th BG in the show seems to be mostly spot on, though there are some skips of time and other very understandable changes and things left out due to it being a show and not a documentary. For instance, Barry Keoghan's character...Curtis Biddick...was from Wisconsin, but the show indicates he is from Brooklyn New York...I have not seen it confirmed, but it seems clear the change could have been made if Barry could do a good Brooklyn accent, but not a good Wisconsin one. LOL As for the history of the 8th Air Force and the bombing campaign shown in the show, that is complicated, of course. My own big worry is whether the show will deal with the issue of how imprecise "precision" bombing was, and the civilian casualties that result, in an honest manner, or whether it will only repeat the mythology of bombs dropped into pickle barrels from 25k feet altitude. The way the writers introduce the Norden bombsight in this episode is not the reality of how things turned out, but this is early in the show, so there is plenty of time to come back to the Norden and give a true assessment of how well it actually worked.👍

Hi...great content...I had no idea that there were so many wrong things in just the credits...does not bode well for the rest of the show. One quick thing...at around 10:56 you talk about the story of "M'LLE ZIG ZIG", but it seems like you did not realize that "M'LLE" was just a way of abbreviating "Mademoiselle". Oh, and "zig zig" is/was a slang term for secual intercourse, so the actual name of the plane in English would have been "Miss F***". You gotta love that military sense of humor in WW2.😁

What I dislike are the phoney looking computer generated effects. By contrast the film "the Battle of Britain" filmed in '69 or so looked so much more real, of course this is just IMO.

As a rivet counter due to building scale models, armchair researcher and having been around many WW2 aircraft, four being B-17s it is difficult to suspend disbelief when technical/historical flaws are present in film. Christian Bale's character yells, "P-51. Cadillac of the Sky!" which could be a mistake the boy is meant to misquotes in the script or the writer and or director wanted the line for the scene knowing or not knowing, 'Cadillac of the Sky' was used to describe the Republic, P-47, Thunderbolt. This is a good example of what motivates an alteration of historical facts in film. Peter Jackson's attempt to remake, 'The Dam Busters', and the trouble over a dog's name. The War Lover, (1962) Staring Steve McQueen, had three B-17Gs taken out of an outdoor Arizona bone yard after fifteen years and flown to England for the production. They have lots of flaws and missing equipment. The scenes with the tail gunner in a Cheyenne turret using the old ring and bead sight is one of many inaccuracies that make you think it should have been possible to get right. PT109 (1963) had to use three, converted 85 foot crash boats running on only one of three engines. They are mostly convincing but for those who know, not the proper 80 Elco design. The Twilight Zone, (1960) TV episode "King Nine Will Not Return', featuring a crashed B-25 has an example of the worst job of a film crew making a top turret. As long as the script/story/acting is done well the technical hurtles can be forgiven to a point. The good news is any of the CGI can be easily corrected/improved in time.

    • @ChitFromChinola

You lost me at the Twilight Zone, not exactly known for its excellence in props and special effects. :-)

    • @SEMJW
      @SEMJW 9 месяцев назад

Understood. The Twilight Zone was very much like a stage play that relied on great stories and acting, less on props. The average size of a TV screen was 13 inches and reception was poor in the early sixties. 'King Nine Will Not Return', was the first episode of the second season and it could not have been imagined then, how the series would be regarded in later years and the technology of today for watching them. The comment was to point out an extreme example of how far off the accuracy of aircraft can be in film. The B-25C-10NA, serial #42-32354, Michell bomber used in the episode would have a Bendix A-9N, dorsal (top) turret for a combat B-25. The film, 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo' has good footage of the turret to compare on YT. @@ChitFromChinola

If you care to know, the episode is posted multiple times on RUclips. The turret was represented by flat sheets of clear Lexan plastic held together with metal fasteners to form a very weird shape. Two black tubes to represent the .50 cal machine guns. It was like a home made skylight with two tubes sticking out of it. All of the working gear (95% of what a real turret would have) was missing.@@ChitFromChinola

Sadly, the bean counters at Apple cut the budget to convert the B-17Fs into Gs..... The producers had to accept Apple's condition of a fixed budget for MOTA, and near the end of the CGI development, the Unit Production Manager told the CGI crew there was not enough budget to make the B-17Gs, because the changes were "trivial" and not worth the money. Of course, they had to redo the CGI anyway to make the planes natural metal, but no chin turrets.....bleh.

If you are going to make a series commemorating those brave USAAF 8th you need to get the basic details correct & tell their true stories. From the initial trailers for this series I was sceptical that it would be just another Hollywood version of WW2 with a mix of "Schindler's List" (the death train sequence), "Garrison's Guerillas" (downed aircrew taking on German soldiers) and "Apocalypse's Now" (downed airman up to his neck in swamp water with 1911 pistol in hand spying on German soldiers). The involvement of the "Tuskegee Airmen" who flew in the Mediterranean Theater and not out of England is only there for "Diversity Box Tick" reasons as black GI's didn't feature as aircrew in the 8th.

Ah, why did you point out the B-17 wing in the intro? That's going to bother me now lol.

Pacific wasn't meant to portray characters on an individual level in the same way Band of Brothers did. The latter told a story through the perspective of brotherhood and the relationship of the company. Pacific told a story based on experience and impact

I cannot wait for this series. I think it will be fantastic. The planes look MUCH better in the most recent trailers. Thanks for explaining how this series went from HBO to Apple TV+...I still don't understand why, but, I didn't realize how poorly the Pacific performed, sadly.

So far I've been quite happy with everything I've seen from trailers/clips and other promo. One annoyance from an accuracy point of view will be the lack of B-17G representation because it appears that the replicas and CG will be portraying B-17Fs throughout the war, with only the paintjobs shifting from olive drab to bare metal as the war progresses. Apparently the intention was to use CGI to 'modify' replicas in post, but I wouldn't be surprised if they simply ran out of VFX budget given the demands of this show, and had to sacrifice that particular detail.

I must make a clarification. Around the 20:15 mark I say that Cambodian MiGs visited Pleiku Air Base , when in reality it was Phu Cat Air Base. I should have verified that the tail codes of the F-4Ds in the picture (which show HK 480th TFS, and HB 489th TFS) which belonged to the 37th TFW 66-70 and later 12th TWF 70-71 Phu Cat Air Base, South Vietnam. This was brought to my attention when watching a video about the Have Ferry and Have Drill programs along with a mention of the Have Privilege program by Not A Pound For Air To Ground: ruclips.net/video/OvOCtIHyqhk/видео.html I can't recommend his channel enough!

Enjoyed your video very much. Yes indeed there were some things I could have added. I was stationed my last six months at Bien Thuy and have numerous pictures of Air Base. One picture you may have enjoyed taken in April 1971 while getting ready for a combat mission in Cambodia when Captain Kim Kano (my normal side kick), Royal Cambodian Air Force was also in the picture, My Call sign was Tilly 31 while stationed there. The picture was taken from the front of the O-2 showing full rocket pods. I also had pictures of several Bien Thuy O-2A's with tail numbers showing and I still have most of my Bien Thuy and TASS patches. We never wore patches during missions. We did have rocket attacks at Bien Thuy, but, not many. I also flew the first flight of the day while it was still dark. We owned the south side of the River and the VC owned the north side. We normally took off toward the river. I turned off all my exterior lights and ran the engines at a rpm differential. The difference in the sound of two engine not in harmony fooled the VC for me every time. I never took a hit on takeoff. When Captain Kano was not available, I had a French speaking American Captain who was a photographer. He took lots of photo's of the ground while I was putting in airstrikes. Thanks for bringing back memories. Looking forward to sharing this video with my children and grand children.
