    I have a question. What do you know about single pilots, in their late twenties, on how they live? Is there a life style that is really different from the married pilots? Where do they usually live - base housing or off base? Do they bring their POVs or they buy cars in England? If you such a pilot, I would not mind communicating (email) with him or her. The reason why I am asking is because I am writing a realistic romance story that takes place in England, between a British nurse and an American pilot stationed at RAF Lakenheath.

    Apparently it's haunted. It must be as me & Denny left Peterborough on a trip to Hunstanton one dark gloomy sunday night (around 1986) for a burger (it was gross) and decided to drop in on Castle Rising on the way back. Be buggered if we could find it ! We ended up stumbling around Barnack Hills & Hollows in a drunken stupor quoting excepts from American werewolf. Aaaaah Yoof. How did we survive ?

      The "Green Grass" thing is literally true. I've lived in Western Australia in the 70's & early 80's and yes it's beautiful but when you come back to the UK the "Green" hits you. My Mum has lived in New Hampshire (USA) for probably 30 years and that was the very first thing she said she noticed upon visiting us back here in Blighty. We really do live in a Green & Pleasant Land and we should protect that with all our might.

    Glad your Dad enjoyed Bury. Bill's is good, but is part of a national chain. There are some excellent independant cafes including Bailey's 2 jyst around the corner in Whiting Street and Wrights on the corner with Looms Lane. The remains of the northern wall of the Abbey just visible at 2.45 from your favourite spot are known locally as the chicken and the teapot. The Abbey has just celebrated its millenium as it was founded by King Canute in 1020. The grid layout of the town which exists today was laid out by Abbot Baldwin who became Abbot in 1065 and mirrors those from Normandy which is where he came from. Bury was already under Norman control when William 'conquered' Britain in 1066. This is why there are no Norman defences in Bury; they were not needed.

    I was there in the 1980s. Did not recognize much except the bowling alley and then the left turn into base housing. They put that gate in by housing and the traffic circle. There was none there before except an emergency exit I think. That housing on the right as your drive in with 3 levels was typical back then and are the same buildings with new paint. They built regular houses in there? Those were other 3 level houses on the left and woods. There used to be an ugly brick building in base housing that was the old grocery store before they built the "new" one off of Goddard drive? Most of the military buildings back then were green and had green panels on them. I lived in the barracks by the radar station. Two guys to a room and maybe 3 in the dayroom!? You married folks had the life and still do! They usually pulled me out of the barracks to work weekends.

    Liked watching this vlog. Question for you about jet noise at RAF Lakenheath- do the F15’s and F35’s occasionally takeoff in full afterburner at, say, 2, 3 or 4 AM when they are participating in a military exercise? I’m guessing that after a couple of months, you get used to the jet noise, but not sure. Did you? I’ve watched a number of F15’s takeoff at airshows and they are ***loud***!!!

    • @TheWanderingAces
      @TheWanderingAces 2 года назад

      I agree they are really loud! We live off base now so I couldn’t tell you if we would get used to the jet noise. I don’t recall them waking up in the middle of the night when we did stay on base for a couple of months.
