Anyone figure out how to turn on tracers? I grew up playing this game and loved it, but recently got it on steam and there are NO tracers.

Great battles is much better

This looks surprisingly good for a nearly thirty year old game! I played the death out of MS combat flight simulator and then il-2.... looks like I missed a really good game. Flight simming has become more and more niche and less central to gaming in general as time passes. You knew an era had passed when MS stopped supporting or making the sidewinder force feedback sticks. <<still>> the best forcefeedback stick! -- absolutely revolutionary, unkillable stick... and they stopped making it. It would be like Apple going, yeah, the iphone is pretty good, but I dunno... we don't feel like making phones anymore. No, we won't license the design either, cuz, uh... i dunno we just sorta hate good things, K?

This game deserves a remaster.

The game could have been perfect, if not 2 major drawbacks. Levels and AI. Levels lack the sandbox feeling about them, really no wish to complete any level two times. And AI, both for friendlies and enemies . Team mates don't even attempt to cover you when you're under fire. Even in SWAT 3 that was released 24 years ago they did. And enemies are unbelievable accurate and fast. Rarely criminal possess commando level skills in real life, and when they do, it's not so frequent. And you have to deal with them with a team of five, while in real life there would be dozens of cops, sniper support, helicopters etc.

I still have 2 or 3 clean install CDs :) I'm about to install it shortly. hopefully no issues, OR theres some good online fixes for it.

Its strange that this holds up so much better then other 3D Games of this Era. Still looking ok even today!

How does this compare with Battle of Britain?

A few days ago I bought this game, Privateer, Wing Commander Prophecy (which I had back then), Panzer Elite (which I also had back then), Civ 3, Alpha Centauri, Tie Fighter, Sim City 3000 and a few other old games during the summer sales at Steam and GOG. The demo of this game was the first game i played on my first own PC but I have played PC games from 1990 onwards when I still had an Amiga 500 (- later I bought an Amiga 1200 with hd, extra ram, a cd drive and so on from the first money I had worked hard for during summer holidays...). I liked it and thought the graphics were amongst the best I had seen up to 1997 or 1998. I absolutely have no problems with old graphics of the 90s and if so, only with badly aged 3D-Games with very low res textures (Most PS1 games, apart from maybe Tony Hawk, Resident Evil 1 to 3, Gran Turismo and a few others, for example.). I still like good old Amiga graphics and early VGA graphics very much. I still play many old games today, be it Amiga, sometimes even C64, Gameboy, MAME, PC, PS1 and PS2, or PC. I especially love old war simulations and strategy games of all kinds on the PC from back then. Modern "simulations" are too fast paced or too complicated for my taste, skills and equipment. So I like old flight simulations, especially with dynamic campaigns and maybe a strategy part like Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe, Wing Commander 1, 2 and Prophecy, (Command) Aces Of The Deep, Panzer Elite (the simulation) and also Wings (the original Amiga version), or Their Finest Hour - The Battle Of Britain. I am looking forward to playing European Air War. I don't have problems with even older graphics than in this game. I loved all the qualities of gameplay in older games from, let's say 1990 onwards. I hope it plays well with a keyboard and a mouse. Alternatively I could use a gamepad but I hope that it plays well with keyboard and mouse.

It is not possible to choose the best 90s sim. Cause it was a time when every year was filled with loads of these games. For instance my fav flight sim was EF2000 from Digital Image Design (DID). I also loved F-22 Lightning 2, Comanche 1+2+3, Aces over Europe, F/A-18 Hornet 3.0, Janes Fighters Anthology... oh man there were SOOO MAAAANY OF THESE GAMES. Today there is a DCS and... basically thats it. I didn't mention war thunder because its an abomination...

I was a programmer on this at Microprose and coded the bailout sequence (0:14) based on my nightmares of getting sucked out of a plane. You weren't level when you bailed so I think you got the random outcome that your parachute was ripped off your back when you hit the tail, but you were still conscious (other options being you were knocked out, or you survived the bailout with parachute intact that would deploy after a random short time). I think here you could have moved the mouse during freefall to stop the spin, fall flat and maybe live since you were over water, which I coded as an option. I spent way too much time on it when we were trying to rush out the V1.1 patch after initial release.

I was a programmer on this and it's nice to see the bailout sequence at 3:48 that I coded and spent way too much time on, and haven't seen on other videos yet. After hitting the bailout command, you start out on the wing, and depending on speed and orientation you can either bonk your head on the tail and fall away semi-conscious until you splat on the ground; or a small chance you can get caught on the tail and ride it all the way to the ground as it spirals in; or you can cleanly fall away and actually use the mouse to stop your spin (flatten out like skydivers) and there is a small chance of surviving if you're flat and over water then go vertical at the end (my personal plan if I'm ever sucked out of an aircraft over water). Like I said I spent way too much time on that with the V1.1 patch but it was a morbid interest of mine. Also after you splat and die, the camera pulls away because I was thinking that's maybe what happens after death, based on people's near death experiences (floating over your body). Now you know.

One of the most memorable flight sims, indeed. Too bad the mission design was not to my liking and thus I never really enjoy everything this sim had to offer. However, the graphics, flight model, smooth frame rate and in-cockpit system simulation was top notch.

What a trip down memory lane! EAW was the reason I got a HOTAS setup. With a force feedback stick, it was awesome fun!

Those F-14s you can hear on the radio would have been very helpful had they not been busy in the Gulf of Sidra (and somehow you can still overhear them).

Thanks so much for posting this - I loved this game modded back in the day. I actually used this sim to try out the Red Tails tactics that kept them from loosing a single bomber due to fighters, and it worked really well. The trick is to fly above the bombers without weaving 2000 ft. higher and slightly behind. That way, you can dive down on the approaching fighters at a higher speed and shoot them down or run them off - basic boom and zoom tactics. The secret is to stay disciplined and stay with the bombers once you've chased off the bad guys. I love it when these sims can actually give insight into what the guys actually went through back in history. Battle of Britain 2 is the best for experiencing the dread of flying into a swarm of bombers hundreds strong. It's also a great strategy game where you can see how the Dowding system let them face overwhelming numbers with some hope of surviving.

Too bad the leafy green trees of summer weren't made more wintry looking. The cloud texture sitting on the horizon makes it look like you're over a large, flat plain surrounded by mountains in the distance. The smoke particles, when expanded in size past a certain point, go white and partly transparent, but with a really noticeable, dark rim. They look like irregular smoke rings. Did you have a dead zone set for your stick's elevator axis? Or was the sensitivity on the high side. Or were you flying by keyboard? The uneven pitch rate when making smaller inputs caused excessive 'bouncing'. But other than that, pretty neat! 😊

I still have mine with the CDKey printed on the outside of the case. 😆 Loved it. Seeing it again, reminds me of Microprose’s latest offering is it called ‘little war’ or something on steam. Not a patch on this beauty
