We had the same issues with the spacing of the black petals. We flipped the elbow piece so it was more stable as well.

How do you put the blocks on the square to face that way 4:12
Put a corner of the top block onto the corner of the bottom square going inward ⧉. The addition of the circle block helps to stabilize the top block and should go diagonal to the boom square. I hope this helps!
