When Mardi was there... This short-life Mardi on the wall of The Chartered Bank in Phuket old town will add to the long list of the history of this building. The painting is the first of the planned 12 street art installations around Phuket city. All paintings will be about Phuket food culture to celebrate ‘City of Gastronomy’ designation by UNESCO. Some conservative people (and somewhat narrow-minded IMO) can not stand the idea that modern art was painted on the wall of such a historic building. That building, The Chartered Bank (the predecessor of today Standard Chartered) was the first bank branch in Phuket city. There was a lot of heated debate from both side in the Phuket community. I think most people are fine with it ((most even love it)) but the organiser decided it will be the best compromise to erase it with the condition that the artist (Alex Face) will do it by himself after about a month. I personally think the decision is the good one. The project went viral on the Social Media and gain a lot of attention from the community And he did it in style. He did a stop motion animation of the erasing process with some message for the narrow-minded with big mouth. ^^
