How can I contact you? I believe my Dad, WW II Gunner’s Mate 1st. Class Carlos Clifton (Nip) Howard is in this video. He was a submariner stationed at Pearl Harbor on this day. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for single-handedly saving his submarine, the USS Tambor with his machine gun during its Ninth War Patrol. If you do a search for his full name on the Internet, you can read all about it in the article, Cornered at the Bottom of the East China Sea, and the authors even picture the Tambor pointing out his machine gun at the beginning of the article. My Dad would not talk about the war. I have been doing research for over 20 years.

Dad was a turret gunner on an Avenger torpedo bomber during the Guadalcanal Campaign with the First Marine Air Wing.. He flew off a carrier and out of Henderson Field and was awarded three battle stars on his wings. I found this out by researching his record after his passing. The things he did and saw, the stories he could tell but he never said a word! I just knew he was in the Marines in WW II growing up. I bet that he would have loved to see this video. I was born and raised in Hawai’i. Seeing that downtown Honolulu and Waikiki didn’t change much, yet has changed, is somber. The song, sung by Jimmy Durante, makes one feel nostalgic for better days.

The condition of the film is amazing, the colours are still brilliant and clear, this type of material must be preserved to remind people young and old of our history, before history gets re written that it never happened.

Amazing...How soon some of those on those Islands have forgotten those that fought and died to keep their Grand Parents and Parents alive and free...the Japanese were not known as nice invaders...

Greatest Generation

This was on my fifth birthday. We were having party at our house when all the local sirens were going off. Everyone thought it was an air raid or some other emergency and all the kids ran home. After we all found out the war was over the kids returned and we resumed the party. I’ll always remember that day......

So sad. I feel it when I visit the area. The waves are powerful there. May all who perished rest peacefully. Thanks for making this video so we remember.

The song gets to me...as if through the smiles and cheers each person was thinking of family members, friends, and loved ones who would never be coming home... “I’ll be seeing you.” Given the deep threads of Japanese Samurai culture it is unimaginable how difficult all of this was in Japan. A different song was surely played that day. When I was living in Japan it deeply interested me how the two countries became such genuine allies generations after the war and how in particular the relationship between Japan and Hawai’i grew to become so positive and strong. 🌿🌺

Definitely the Greatest Generation ever. What a contrast between them and the spoiled brats we have today trying to tear everything down and destroy everything this generation and those before it fought for.

This week in 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary. The celebrations must have been amazing. We must honour their sacrifice and memory for making a better world for us.

Sadly there can't be any celebrations, due to the current situation..
