Lover of the British countryside, history, fine art, poetry, folk and classical music, landscape and architectural photography. New videos featuring my visits to various villages and towns around the country coming up real soon.
Sweet Was The Walk
My first video in quite some time and my first one since changing the name of this channel recently. This one is just a quiet, sedate stroll around a bit of my local countryside here on the eastern edges of Leeds, West Yorkshire, that I took at 5am a couple of mornings ago.
The poem I recited in three separate segments is one written by the famous Lake District poet, William Wordsworth, called Sweet Was The Walk.
Sweet was the walk along the narrow lane
At noon, the bank and hedge-rows all the way
Shagged with wild pale green tufts of fragrant hay,
Caught by the hawthorns from the loaded wain,
Which Age with many a slow stoop strove to gain;
And childhood, seeming still most busy, took

Wharram Percy - Deserted Medieval Village
Просмотров 3525 лет назад
Wharram Percy is a deserted medieval village on the western edge of the chalk Wolds of North Yorkshire. Although the site seems to have been settled since prehistory, the village appears to have been most active from the 10th to the 12th centuries. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as 'Warran' or 'Warron'. The suffix 'Percy' stems from the prominent, aristocratic family that owned the area d...

A late Spring ramble through the English countryside with just a camera-phone (and Mother Nature of course) for company. A WALK THROUGH BARNBOW One of my regular walking routes taken last week on a dry, sunny, windy but warm Spring day. Much of the landscape shown was given over to an armaments factory during the First World War. Hard to believe that one hundred years later this tranquil and qu...

The 2007 tour of Topsham was five concerts in small venues, aimed at a local audience. To capture the spirit of the gigs, they were recorded 'fly-on-the-wall' style on hand held cameras, so the sound and picture quality varies. This is part one.

There's a DVD of that gig, well worth the money.
There is and I have it. I highly recommend it..
beeeeeutifully done
Sublime.
Steve Knightley is one of those under the radar (for most people) genuises, a sort of secret national treasure. One of the great contemporary songwriters.
You, me and many others think the same.
This is Jonathan myhill it’s my page do u like it it’s 1 of my covers it’s a lovely song
Terrific. First version I've heard to match Carolyn Hester. Terrific. Piano is great.
Thank you for this. To walk where they walked, to touch the earth that they touched. So many ages ago but still remains. My heart yearns to be there, it's so beautiful.
While I am here, "In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow" Your beautiful video transported me to summer days of hearing the birds and bees going about their day. Lovely video, music and hearing you read William Wordsworth was perfection. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment Bernice, I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you, it was most serene. Vaughan WIlliams's The Lark Ascending is another beautiful piece.
Excellent keep up the good work, some very good camera work, look forward to next one. 👍🏻
Cheers Mark and thanks for the positive response.
A lovely video. I felt that I was on that sweet walk with you!
Thank you, I'm very glad you liked it.
So hauntingly sad!
So moving...it always brings me to tears...such an emotive traditional song. xxxxxx
good, but the Shelag Mc Donald version is too much better, much more emotional and mesmerezing
Great 👍🏻
Beneath the Blair smile smirks the Tory grin.
What does "marrow" mean in this context?
"compare" So "scarce would find her marrow" = "none like her" And "twas an unequal marrow" = "unfair match"
thank you @@chriswellsx
I Looovvveeee josh Robins. Not seen him in Ely lately 💋 💋 💋 💋
Lovely.Hard to imagine the small town that was the Barnbow factory of WWI. Well done Pete👍🏴

First time I've heard this song. She has a very haunting voice. I loved it.
polly has a pure voice.saddly she missed her mark, as im sure she could have stood shoulder to shoulder with the best given the right chances.
Love this! She has a most beautiful voice!
I have Polly's album featuring this song...she sing's it so beautifully, I sob all the way through it!! x
What a way to propose!!
1st July 1916 The Battle of The Somme. We Remember
Hauntingly beautiful.
The most beautiful song xx* I am trying to find a youtube version of the latest recording from Centenary or a live recent recording. Any advice ? xx*
Fantastic singer/musician and a thoroughly nice person!
So beautifully sad...
EXCELLENT!!
'Things I learnt this Year' <3 x
So beautiful. Just getting back in to Show of Hands music after too long away. x
Brilliant song. My great x 2 grandad was a Keeper in Yorkshire. My grandad was wounded on the Somme on 1st July 1916.
Great video! Don't forget about the short piece on the Fiddle after 'The Oak' called 'Breakfast for Altan' (a Phil Beer composition).
As a toddler 63 years ago, I am told I loved m Morris dancing. Watching the Albion Morris has stirred something in me. Now im watching Morris dancing on UTube whenever I can.
old but still good.
This seems to have been taken in large part from an album from the sixties, but I can't quite place it. When I get my records in order I'll find it. I think it may have been Caroline Hester. Polwart's voice is better and she puts in a nice minor ending to the lines, but the general melody and execution is quite the same. I always liked it sung that way. This is very good.
Is this the version you are thinking of? Six years since you wondered. Did you find it? This is the melody line I think she is borrowing, truly beautiful melody and singing from one of the great disappearing acts of the 60's. ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=shelagh+mcdonald+dowie+dens+of+yarrow
Here's Carolyn Hester: ruclips.net/video/CanRZQLdjUM/видео.html I wonder if this is the traditional melody line.
x stunning x
I am home - when'e you going back to Saxony or Schleswig-Holsten ?
Settled it w Vortigern years back. We’re all in the same boat now.
You mean like the 20% of English people who have moved into Wales and vote against Welsh Language schools ?
I could play this to death - it's superb. As for you Daily Telegraph-type racist tossers - these lads show a type of English nationalism that attacks no one else but says to address your own faults. Some of it is ironic, like posing by Kernow, which is a Celtic country claimed by the Germanic English, and the use of Drake's Drum, a direct copy of Arthur's - Arthur, the man who fought against the English invaders of these isles... The very acceptable face of English Nationalism
wow seriously good video. Well done and congratulations for taking the time and trouble and for finding the inspiration to do it. Must have taken ages to collect the images. Very thoughtfully put together and very moving. Really deserves more hits. Sadly you d be better with a silly cat video for that end ( ie loads of hits). But anyway, I really appreciate it. Wonderful wonderful song as usual from Mr knightley and crew. A mighty thumbs up from me.
