Yay!!!! Missed you!!!!!
Aww! Thanks :) I missed you too!!! <3
So many exciting things going on for you! That's so awesome. Also your podcast interview will go great and I definitely want to listen when it's out so you better post it! 😊
Awwww Thank you so much for the kind words. <3 <3 :) I'll be posting the link on a little short video when it's complete.
Thank you. So very helpful.
You’re welcome 🥰
poor sound
Sorry about that. I do the best I can, but you’re right, this one was pretty bad. I’m trying to get back to filming soon and I’ll see what I can do to make them better.
@@MWinklerBooks Your voice comes across just fine, and the info looks good. Only problem is the music track which is distracting. I don't know why RUclips creators feel like every video has to have "tunes." But thanks for putting together a helpful video.
Ahh, I see. I believe that's a personal preference. I've seen some videos without music (other than briefly at the intro) and others with music playing throughout. It doesn't bother me either way as long as the music is low enough so I can hear them talking. If it's too loud to understand them it definitely bugs me. Since my channel is still small and my music is added post-production, I could try uploading 2 versions, one with background music and one without? I've had videos without music and it feels very awkward for me. But I don't want some of my listeners to be annoyed by my content LOL In any case, I'm glad you found the info useful. If you ever request a specific video from me I'll be sure to upload it without background music for you :)
Very helpful - thank you 😃
You’re welcome. So happy I could help 😁
Thanks for this. I watched a few others. It still took me a while to figure out how to tell Scrivener what chapters etc to include in the compile. It's not an intuitive program. Just about ready for Beta readers for my first novel. I'll use Book Funnel.
I'm so glad I was able to help. Congrats on being close to Betas, that's a great milestone. Thanks for the view and comment <3
Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I wish Scrivener had better, more interactive documentation in it, The official manual is super huge and frankly not as objective as it could, sometimes developers forget to give plenty of examples on its own documentation. I was able to compile my ebook, import it on my Kindle and it works perfectly, after your first explanation of the Layouts, how they work, and all that I was able to figure it out the rest by myself. There's plenty to test and mess around with to learn every single option, because just like you said: A lot of the examples make us confused about how they would work, but as long as we have any reader on our PCs to check the files after compiling, we can do it as many times as we need. Thank you again for your help, I'm going to save this video to check on it later if I ever forget how to configure the layouts again!
I'm so glad I was able to help. Thanks for the comment.
NIce intro to Scrivener. Thank you!
Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it. :)
Hi! Thank you for a great video. Helped me a lot :) I followed all the steppes, and it worked perfectly. Almost. Chapter 1 is whiteout an indent, but chapters 2 and later all have one, and I need help finding how to change it. I found the boxes in the options that should fix the problem, but it doesn't work. Any advice?
I’m not sure without seeing it. If you sent me a private message on Twitter or Instagram (@mwinklerbooks) I can give you my email so you can send a screenshot. I’d be happy to help if I can. I appreciate your comment and hope we can solve this 😊
If you feel stuck in Windows, (like you cannot leave because all your programs function on a Windows environment only), there is hope for those of us who are die hard Scrivener 3 users and want to stick with a Linux based operating system. This can be achieved by downloading the Lutris gaming app in Linux and accessing Scrivener 3 in the software, running the program and setting up your license through Literature and Latte direct through the software like you would in Windows, (Phew, run on!!). Keep in mind, this is not pirating, nor is it illegal. Linux is a 100% free and open source operating system with hundreds of different alternatives. But we have found ways to run our Windows software very well without the spying. (Sorry, Michelle. Just a geek and writer who is excited about the Scrivener 3 working on Linux)
That’s pretty cool. I hope it works well for you. and I appreciate the comment. Hope you’re enjoying my videos.
Hello and thank you for this video. I am writing a novel, and it seems that starting in "blank" is easier for me to understand. Is there a benefit to starting in Novel mode? Can I add that mode later? Also, I was hoping that Scrivener had a Hero's Journey template (Windows), but it doesn't, as you know. I have tried several times to get something free on the internet, but none of them work. It seems that just going in blank and following this video is the easiest. I have a hand-written rough outline. I just want to get the thing into Scrivener. I will just try your way, I guess. Do you think that is the best way to get going?
Hey, thanks for your comment. :) If by "mode" you mean the formats you can choose from when you create a brand new project, the only benefit to starting with any of them instead of blank, is the structure is already there for you to add to or customize. Starting from blank you have to add everything yourself. I don't believe you can change to a different "mode" later since it's only available when starting a new project. To understand the different formats (modes) better, I suggest creating a new file with each of the formats. Maybe name them the same as the format name so you remember which is which. Then just have a look at the differences in each of them. I think for a rough outline you just want to get started on, any of them will do. Simply trash the parts you don't want and create any that aren't already there. The template I use most, is my own adjusted version of Save the Cat. It took me a while to add all the parts and fine tune it to be just what I wanted. I've offered it free when you sign up for my newsletter. If you want to try it, the link is: www.subscribepage.com/newsscrivtemplate I also have a video walking you through setting it up at: ruclips.net/video/s5K4wQaeyzE/видео.html I hope you find what you're looking for. Best of luck on your new writing adventure! :)
I know I'm nitpicking but the binder gray scale color. Is there any way to change it? Maybe make it darker like it was in Scrivener 2. Also, the corkboard index cards now are black cards without the blue horizontal lines (though they retained the red top line). Can that be restored?
Thanks so much for your comment. I'm very sorry it took me so long to reply. I fell off the habit of checking daily. I believe you can change the color of anything, using the template that is the closest match to what you want as a starting point: Go to File ~> Options ~> Appearance tab. Then you can choose what you want to adjust from the left column and adjust it how you want from the right side. There's all kinds of things you can change here, so I suggest just playing around until you get it customized how you want. I hope that helps. If you'd like a video walking you through it, just let me know. As for the horizontal line on the cards, I'm not sure which lines you mean. If you're talking about lines similar to in a notebook, then there is a checkbox that toggles them on and off in the same Options window ~> Appearance ~> Index Cards ~> Options tab. I don't know why it would have toggled off on its own, so maybe the lines are very close to the color of the card and you can't see them. You can change the color of them in the same options window as well. Choose Index Cards ~> Colors tab ~> Lines. clicking the box on the right will let you choose whatever color you want. Have fun customizing. Let me know if you need anything else :)
Have you upgraded to Windows 11? If so, any problems with Scrivener 3?
Thanks for the comment :) Yes, I upgraded. I Haven't seen any issues yet.
😊 You made it very easy to understand. Perfect. Make more with windows.
Thank you, I'm so happy it helped. I am planning to make more. I just haven't had time to film and edit. Hopefully soon. :)
How do I put Scrivener on different computers?
Hi Joanna. 😁 Thanks for the comment. If you mean the program itself, I believe once you’ve installed it onto one computer, you can just use the same activation key when you install it on the next computer. If you mean, how do you work on a Scrivener project on different computers, you have 2 options: 1: save your project to a flash drive and open it from the flash drive on the other computer. This way you don’t need internet, but you’ll have to remember to save it to your flash drive each time you switch computers. 2. You can save it to a cloud drive (like Google drive, Dropbox, etc.). That way whatever computer you use will always have the most updated version, but you’ll need internet to access it. Hope that helps. 😁 If not, let me know and I’ll try again.
Hello! I just stumbled upon this video, and I am so glad you enjoyed Tales of Mundane Magic: Volume One! I'm sorry the format was confusing, the stories were intended to be "short stories" but I totally understand them almost being like flash fiction. It's so wonderful to hear that you liked them, and that you liked the name "figgle"! Let me know if you ever end up reading Volume Two or Three!!
Hi! 😃 No worries about the format. I’ve only read a couple books that weren’t in novel format, so that’s on me. I did love it though. Not sure I realized there were other volumes out. I’ll definitely add them to my TBR. 😁❤️❤️ thanks for watching
Thank you :)
Happy to help 🥰

I'm so glad I was able to help. Thanks so much for subscribing :) I'm scripting videos to return soon.
That was super helpful! Thank you! I was tearing my hair out trying to set up a novella that I wrote in the short story template into one with chapters and parts.
Yay! I’m so glad I could help 🥰 Scrivener is a fantastic program, but it’s not very intuitive. Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like a video on. I hope to be making new videos soon 🤞
Thank you this was a really helpful video and made it soooo much simpler!
You’re welcome. 😁 Glad I could help.
Thanks for this. Thinking about moving to Scrivener from Word at some point.
You're welcome. Glad I could help with your decision.
This is like the best tutorial about compiling but it’s hard to hear with all that noise. Please don’t use music in tutorials when you’re speaking.
Thanks so much for the feedback. It feels awkward to me when there's silence, but I'll try it on the next video. :)
You got so many lovely things! I love the crystals and affirmation cards. Great stuff to do in the morning and before bed :)
Yeah, there was some great stuff in this box. Unfortunately I dropped the crystal while filming and broke a small chunk off it 😢 but I still keep it on my desk and it makes me smile, so I guess it still works😅
@@MWinklerBooks oh no! Glad you still have it on your table though.
Thank you that made it really easy. I have had scrivener for years. Never had the patience to learn it as it seemed so complicated. I will definitely look at your other videos.
I'm so happy to help :) It really is a robust program. Not complicated, but there's so many options it can be overwhelming. I suggest if/when you start using it you stick to just what you need it to do. Don't worry about anything fancy until you are used to the basic features. Once you're comfortable with those, learning new functions one at a time can be fun. Let me know if there's every a specific feature you want a video on.
Thanks! I could not figure out 'heading' and 'section.' Makes so much more sense to call them chapter and scene!
Thanks for the comment :) I'm so glad I could help.
Unboxing videos are so fun! Thanks for sharing with us. I hope you have fun using that. It's gorgeous!
Thank you! 🥰 I’m so glad you liked it
YES UNBOXINGS! I loved the whole box! Those cards are amazing, but the stiiiickersssssss!!!! Such a gorgeous planner! Oh, and the countdowns had me cackling XD LOL More unboxings please!
Awww I’m so glad you liked it 🥰 I can get very silly when I’m in a good mood. When I was editing I get very critical of myself and It was a little embarrassing for me to watch, so I thought I’d just lean into it and put a spotlight on it😅 It made me laugh too. I’ll do more unboxings, but my computer crashed so it may be a while. Hopefully not too long 🤞
how do you add your cover picture into scrivener?
That's a great question. I struggled for a long time to figure it out. On the right side panel (inspector panel) in the top section that says 'Synopsis' look to the right and you'll see a tiny index card icon. click on it and it will switch to a picture icon. Then you can just drag an image file into the space below it. If you have any issues, let me know and I'll upload a quick video showing it. :) Hope that helps.
This was so useful! As a longtime Scrivener user (since 2007!), I've really struggled with the new Compile interface - it may be better in the long run, but I never had to assign section types to documents before so that really wasn't intuitive and I've had a lot of Compile disasters! Now I understand that I should probably set up the sections before I even think about compiling, it's going to be a lot easier 😀
I'm so glad I was able to help. Thanks for commenting to let me know :) Having to assign section types is a bit of an odd step to have to take, in my opinion. I also was confused by it at first. Good luck with your writing and compiling. <3
For my English speakers, this is what Google Translate said they asked: Thank you to you for this very clear presentation. I would like to ask you the following question about this wonderful software: is it possible to not display the word count at the bottom of the screen? I prefer to view this kind of statistics whenever I want, like in Word for example where there is the “Statistics” function in the menu. I did not find this possibility in the options, I hope the designer has thought of this detail. Thank you in advance for your answer. Yours truly And this is what I replied: You are welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed my video. I have to use Google Translate to write this to you, so I hope the words are right. On the top menu in Scrivener, click View, then Editor Layout, then click Footer View so that it’s unchecked. This will remove the entire bar at the bottom of the editor window. I hope this helps. Thanks again for viewing and commenting.
Bonne chance à vous dans vos projets d’écriture, and excuse me for my french, my poor english is very bad. Best regards
Tu as écrit plus en anglais que moi en français :) Here's what they said to me: @MWinklerBooks Thank you very much for your quick and friendly response, it works perfectly. The words are a bit different in the software but I found it easily thanks to your recommendations. I had searched in the program options, which is why I could not find anything, it was in the environment menu itself. Good luck to you on your writing projects, and excuse me for my french, my poor english is very bad. Best regards. Here's how I replied I’m happy it worked for you. It does make more sense for it to be in program options. My guess is it’s in environment because it isn’t turning off the word count, just hiding it from view. Maybe. XD Anyway, I’m glad I could help. Good luck to you too. And don’t worry about having to use French. You wrote more in English than I could in French :)
Great tutorial!
Thank you 🥰
I completely agree about the thick skin. A huge part of being a writer is to be tough and to not allow oneself to get too caught up in people's opinions. I don't enjoy every single book I read; sometimes the book can be well-written, just not my thing. And yes, self-publishing is a business!
YAYYY!!! I LOVE your blue dress! Was lovely to meet you thru the PT Awards and enjoying our online correspondences!
Aww thank you 🥰
Thanks hun, this has helped alot ;) Sunshine
Aww, you're welcome :)
Thank you for the compile tutorial and these tips!:) The timeline and editing window features seem super cool. Thinking I'll transfer to Scrivener 3. Have been using 1 for a few years. There I got the compile to do pretty much all that I wanted, except adding an image to use as divider between scenes. Hopefully they'll have the option in 3, but if not, I'll just keep using those images as "scenes" in the binder.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the content. That's a cool idea about using images as scene dividers :D if it's not a version 3 feature, it should be!
Sorry again that I missed the livestream! It was fun to hear you talk about the book, easter eggs, and your writing process. Some of my favorite parts of DotA were the beginning and seeing how witches are viewed and treated in places like Sun City as well as the seance scene. Oh, and that one scene where Charlie comes out of the shower in a towel and Jade is like 👀. Lol, gotta love a good romantic subplot. I can't wait to read book 2 and I absolutely LOVE the title! Congrats on the 1 year anniversary. I look forward to seeing what other amazing stories you'll tell on your author journey.
Awww thanks so much! 🥰 not a big deal that you missed it at all 🤗❤️❤️ I appreciate the comment and your support. Glad you enjoyed the replay. The seance scene was fun to write.
Look at you all fancy and awards-ceremony ready in your dress! So pretty. Congrats again on the award. Super excited for you.
Thank you! 😁 I never wear dresses, so this was both awkward and fun at the same time LOL
Congratulations! What a great accomplishment.
Thank you so much! 🥰
Thank you so much to everyone who could make the livestream!! <3 If you're watching on replay, Thanks for stopping by. Leave me any questions you have and I'll be sure to answer them. :)
thank you for this vid. I can't tell you how much time i spent trying to get the compile to work on Scrivener 3. You are the only one that explains the whole project settings. again thank you so much.. I recommend that any one using Scrivener 3 has got to see this vid. it will save you so much time and aggravation. I should know. god bless you.......
Awww, thank you so much for the lovely comment 🥰 I’m thrilled that it helped you so much. I’m on hiatus for a month or two, but let me know if there’s any other aspect of Scrivener 3 you struggle with, and when I’m back I’ll consider making a video on it. Thanks again for your comment. Happy writing 😁
Michelle there is a part of Scribner where you can have two pages on it the same time where you edit one chapter but it's on two pages for editing
I'm so sorry I didn't reply until now. I didn't see your comment for some reason. I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you talking about being able to edit one chapter while you can see a different one? If so, yes. :) You could use the Toggle Split icon to split the editing window into two. The toggle is in the top right corner of the editing pane. It looks like a little square cut in half, next to an up and down arrow. Click it again to go back to viewing just one document in the pane. I'll make a quick video showing it an related navigation tricks. If editing goes well, I'll post it to my channel today or tomorrow. Again, so sorry I didn't see your comment. If I ever disappear like that and you need a question answered, you can always message me on Twitter or Instagram @mwinklerbooks. :)
First, thank you for this -- I was not getting anywhere with L&L's tutorial, re: compiling. Your video explained it all perfectly. Second: congrats on the book! I'm self-publishing my debut in the spring. Subscribed.
You're welcome! I'm so happy I could help. :) Congratulations on publishing your first book!! <3
THANK you! You said a few things that made it finally all click for me.
I'm so glad! :) Thanks for watching and the comment. <3
Thank you! This is the best explanation I've found.
Thanks so much! I’m glad I could help 🥰
Thank you so very much for making this video! Very useful. It seems much less intimidating.
You're welcome. I'm glad I could help :)
A Beginner here 🤚When writing the details in a 'Character Sketch' box, how can I move to the next line below if pressing Enter doesn't work for that purpose? Please help!!!
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Hope I'm not too late. I'm not sure what you mean by Character Sketch box. The only thing I could guess is that you're talking about the Synopsis box on the right side panel (in the Inspector pane). The first line of it remains one line, so you can't hit enter to drop to the next line. You have to just click in the space below. Once you're in there you can do multiple lines. Please let me know if that answers your question. If not, could you describe a bit more about where the box is located, and I'll try again :)
I can’t imagine the mind that created Scrivener!
Really great tips Michelle. It's so true that specificity is helpful. For me, it makes a big difference between that feedback coming across as mean and actually providing useful feedback. Also love the "you don't have to change anything you don't want to" bit. It's so true but sometimes I forget that, trying to please everyone instead of just telling the story I want and need to tell. Also! Adorable snuggly pup at the end! ♥️
So glad you liked it :) The 'don't have to change it' thing is hard for me too. Sometimes stepping away from it for a bit and letting it marinate helps me realize if I really want to change it or not.
