Hover X1 - How to video your cycling adventures
Personally I would use Silca chain stripper only for new factory greased chains. A used factory greased chain , even after a couple of hundred miles will need a lot more stripper to flush the muck and worn chain metal out. You could in any case try Silcas suggestion of filtering the stripper with a coffee filter and / or fishing the chain metal out with a magnet ( my suggestion ) . White spirit is far less toxic than the chemical cocktail known as petrol. You don't want to pour it down drains as it can affect pipe sealant, but contaminating ground water is the main concern. Silca chain stripper saves you having to store white spirit in Glass or HDPE plastic containers ( look at the recycling plastic code on the containers it is sold in ) and gives you peace of mind in terms of flammability. Although beyond the remit of this video, it would be interesting to know the environmental fate of factory grease in used Silca Stripper. If you take waste solvent to recycling centres such as white spirit , they likely fractionally distil it. Likely the grease is still incinerated , although it's amazing what I’ve seen being reused. Note that you probably don't want to use any solvent contaminated with a PTFE based chain lube to start a wood burning stove !
You make a lot of valid points, but I think the average person at home isn't cleaning lots of chains, so the easiest, cleanest and safest way for the home mechanic is to use Silca Stripper. Although you can put the product down the drain as you point out the crap that comes off the chain you shouldn't. For a low volume setup I personally use the coffee filter technique, this way you get more life from the Stripper and get to remove the solids separately which you can dispose of in a safe way. If you were a bike shop, then its different and you would need a more industrial setup.
👍👍👍
Thanks
Absolute garbage these things.
What are tubeless valves? They are the same design as a standard inner tube. What issues have you had?
It just constantly leaks air - i cannot fix it and the bike is less than a month old. It's also the first time I've had tubeless and safe to say ill be ripping them off tomorrow and planting them into the bin. I could only imagine what I'd have to do if my tubeless went flat miles away from home. I'll be reverting to the "old school" method of tubed tyres tomorrow.
I personally would never go back. Tubeless has saved me so many punctures. Just take the bike back, the bike shop will be able to quickly diagnose the issue, it will be a simple fix, if the sealant is coming out of the valve, it’s probably just a lose valve core or the valve isn’t quite seated right.
Nice to know.
Thanks
Very informative video, but you have to turn that music off before you drive someone crazy.
Thanks, it was one of the first videos I made, I have reduced the volume in later videos I make.
Does anyone has experience using connex reusable quicklinks in the latest shimano 12 speed hyperglide+ system? Runs smoth? I would like to try immersive waxing, but the cost of shimano quicklinks looks too much for me.
They are compatible with every 12 speed chain but I haven’t personally used it with the 12 speed shimano (only SRAM). I haven’t personally used just had a quick Google and looked at a few forum and nobody has had any issues with the shimano 12 speed and connex quick link.

Thank you for the review. There is no way to switch off the system? Sometimes you need all your power for the road and not for the dynamo😂.Thank you
Yes, you can turn the light off depending on your setup, if you choose the standard switch it simply flips to the light on or off or to usb charging if you have it, if you have the always on switch, your usb is always on and you just turn the light on and off. In the real world you can’t feel the difference between the light being on or off, it’s only 3-4 watts. A Dynamo hub will always be slightly less efficient than a standard hub whether the light is on or off but again it’s so minimal you can’t feel the difference. You can just have a cable from the hub to the light and just pull it out if you want no power draw.
Fantastic vid just installed a set!
Enjoy!
Great and informative video thanks 😊
Thanks
I thought it was a totally flat field over there, so this was very enlightening.
Yes the field is flat but there is a 10m bank that runs around the edge of it we will use
Sounds exciting
Thanks, Lots of work still to do
Great video showing its capabilities for cycling. I like its ease of use and portability. I'm curious about the dolly track mode. If you take a 90 degree turn, will it still stay in dolly track mode? I've seen some videos where it starts out dolly but then goes to follow me when you turn. Is that the case?
once you learn the quirks of Dolly track you can use it to your advantage. It obviously does not know where you are going so if you take a turn sharp you can catch it out and lose it or have it just follow (after the turn). If you are say, taking a left turn, just before the corner, swing to the right, so you are offset from the drone,it will straighten itself on you, then you can push it around the corner like you have an invisible self stick on it. You can also take advantage of it not knowing where you are going and use it for a passing shot, again, go to one side of the drone, accelerate past it and the drone will ride along side out and then pull in behind.
Can you still use an xx1 chain?
Yes they are compatible with XX1 chains but not KMC or YBN
Thanks for the help! Everything was going great until I bumped the lever with my shoulder with the line cut hahaha
Easily done
No need for bleed after? If careful 😊??
No, but it isn’t a big job if you need to do it.
Should always wrap the flats so that the tape tightens as you pull back on it, i.e. up from the floor in front of the bar and over the top toward the rider's head.
Yep, I agree
So, I can put my powerbank after the micro usb charger in my toptube bag and charge for example my phone connected to the powerbank? Using that Y-cable does enable a rear light?
See my other question about taking off the front wheel while still connected.😅
Yes, I tend to run 2 smaller batteries and charge the phone from the one that isn’t being charged, then swap it over the next day
Last one fixed it! Genius, thanks 👍😎
Perfect, happy the video helped
Nice video. About to install the adventure kit with nee micro charger, a little excited!
It’s great kit, I keep mine on the bike all year round
@ I’m going to do the same. My hardtail is my Bikepacking and training rig so I just keep it set to go at all times. Got out this week twice under lights, absolutely awesome gear kit, mind blown.
I’m currently looking for a setup and got a question about: ‘accidentally taking off the front wheel’. How does the K-lite handle such a thing in case of a Son hub? Great video btw!👍
@@puyck The kLite will just go into standby mode (the main beam goes off) if you stop or the cable is pulled out. I use a SON hub, its enough to be seen by and to illiminate just in front of you.
@ My worries are more like: taking the wheel and forgot to disconnect the cable. Is There a chance of severe damage? That round Son coaxial cable might handle that sort of quite well. How does kLite it compared to that?
Thank you for all the great information! Did I understand correctly that you can mix the standard wax, a strip chip and endurance wax all in the same pot, then put a new factory chain in the pot? Thanks again.
Yes that is correct
I noticed your chain had some rust on it. Do you blame it on the wax or was it there prior to waxing?
It was an older chain I was messing around with, I haven’t noticed a rust on any of the chains I wax regularly
@@travers_bikes rust is my only concern stopping me from waxing. Thank you for the reply!
I think some chains are more susceptible to rust than others, I have a SRAM XX1 chain on my MTB, I never dry it after wet rides, just wash the bike and put it away and it has never shown any signs of rust.
great :)
Thanks
you are not answering the question here
No you can’t, the 11 speed chain is wider than the spacing on the 12 speed cassette.
Yep - top tip thanks mate
You don’t want to get your hands dirty, still need to bring your bike in for a service! 😁
Thanks for the tips. Presta valves can also leak when the tiny threaded shaft that the internal valve nut screws onto (the one you loosen off when inflating the tyre) is bent. Fortunately, new valve cores are cheap as chips!
Yeah, also the curve of the rim can pull the valve to one side if the nut is over tightened
background musıc make me stop watching after 3 mın
Sorry will tone it down in the future
I run AXS flattop chains and SRAM is all about 1 use links, but pppffftttt on that. I re-use them without issue.
I also did for years without any issues but the extra security from the Connex reusable link and no need for a tool to put on/off is a massive bonus
Reusable quick links are the way forward Mike.
The lack of tool to put them on/off is the biggest bonus
Don’t eat it 😂
Spoil sport
Loooooool
Thanks
Is shifting better that srams x01/xx1 casette? Louder smoother and faster?
I used the XX1 cassette before and performance wise I can’t tell the difference between the XX1 and Garbaruk. Noise wise again it’s very similar. The Garbaruk is lighter and cheaper
@@travers_bikes thx for input.
No problem
wouldn't a "pro" have people recording them with regular cameras?
I am not suggesting I am a pro
Great tips, thanks for sharing 👍😎🚴 I fancy the X1
The X1 is a great bit of kit and so easy to use. The new version look even better…but slightly larger.
Great video mate… an incredible adventure.
Thanks 👍
Great informative video. No waffle and to the point. It’s possible to spend days searching google and analysing all the options. So much easier to avoid wasting money buying something someone else has tested in the real world. Am just waiting for the latest Hover to become available before I buy. 😊😎
Yeah the new Hover looks great and was tempted but the model I have has served me well so far so will keep it until it dies. The Insta360 Go3s was the real game changer for me, the speed of recording made it invaluable, when I have more time to stop its small size and magnetic base allows for some really creative shots.
👍👍👍👍
4 thumbs up, praise for ndeed 😁
Excellent examples, thanks for covering this. I saw the Berm Peak review and was intrigued, this is a more in depth explanation. Thanks!
Thanks, I took the X1 on the Great British Divide and it was really useful, initially I had it in my frame bag but then switch to my back pocket, I could start it get it ready to fly and just stop and launch it. Hardly lost any time and still got the shots.
Great video, thanks for recording and sharing. British weather at its best there, although the views and landscapes looked spectacular.
It was great riding, always tricky to get the tone right when you are filming something like this, you don’t want to get a bit too moaning when you are in a dark place. If only I had known this was the better weather!
What an amazing experience
Thanks
All the great British divide videos in one place, what’s not to like!
Indeedy
It's an Aqueduct at Linlithgow
Yes, I realised when I was editing the video, I wasn’t thinking straight when I was riding! 😀
Just found your channel. My first viewing of one of your videos. You kept me engaged right to the end. Well done you - that weather patch was atrocious. Glad to read at the end you are already planning a new adventure. All the best.
Thank you for your kind words, it’s always difficult to know how the videos will come across when you are out on the trails, especially on an adventure like this where you need to keep moving and can only get the camera on at certain times. I just filmed what I enjoyed and hopefully others do too.
What an amazing descent, nice and flowing
It was probably the best descent on the whole trip.
Well done Michael. Thoroughly enjoyed your vlogs. I do wonder whether sharing the experience with someone else of a similar level of performance so you stay together would get you through the tough times ? Fair play to you for sticking 9 days alone. …… What do you do with your bike and kit when you stay in hotels ?……just going in a shop or cafe I would worry someone would have sticky little fingers 🤔😊
I think I ride better on my own, just ride at my own pace. Bikepacking can be a mental thing, sometimes you just have to get through it but you also need to know when to pull the pin. I had a lightweight lock for shops, at the hotels they were good, one allowed me to take it to the room. One put it in the cellar and the last one put it in the conference room.
Great effort mate
Thanks 👍 still don’t regret stopping but…
Well done Michael. We have been with you every inch of the way,.
Thank you
Well done Michael, you've kept us interested on our holiday.
Thanks
Need to do some more downhill mr travers 😅
I have a nice switch back short for this afternoon
