Well, the thing is, that while religion in and of itself isn't a terrible thing, it has historically been used to control and manipulate people. Because by identifying with a religion you're part of a group. And then people not in that group become the out group, and so they become an enemy. Most religions actually just say just be a good person, but historically people in power have used the common folks religious identity to manipulate them. It still happens today and it is exactly what Trump did. Here in India too religion is being used to manipulate. Instead of people really seeing the truth that the reason for their problems is the people in power, they blame the other religion. And religion is just one metric, people see another race as an "other" too.
