Kayaking the WHOLE River Thames, Source to London Barrier

_nickcowley Kayaking (with a bit of cycling) the entire length of The River Thames, from its source in Kemble to the Thames Barrier in London. With music, no Vlog. August/September 2022. On a sunny summers day in the pub an idea popped up between a friend and I, “would’t it be cool to travel the whole length of the Thames”. Well, a couple of months later with something that looke...

Just watched this from the USA. I did my first Spartan Race last weekend and in March I'll do my first Tough Mudder. This looked a bit more intense lol. You 3 are hilarious, good job!
Thank you, welcome from across the pond! Ah if you've done the Spartan I'm sure you'll have no problem doing the Tough Mudder, it's good fun, enjoy!
new sub here, not sure why you’ve not got more tbh keep it up tho
@ivebeaneverywhere appreciate the support! Hopefully have a couple more vids coming soon
@ awesome ill be eagerly awaiting!
Top class as always Nicky boy ❤
I kayaked and camped a lot on the Medway a lot around 20 years ago. Glad to see things are a lot easier and more accessible now. That disused lock has always been sketchy and gives off some weird vibes. I've seen other youtubers set up camp and then bail out because it just doesn't feel safe.
@jonfisher9214 I wish we had stayed on it, but a big part of me is glad we didn't 😅 We really couldn't see any other wild camping spots!
Great video!! 👍
Living on the wild side. Anything could have happened alone on a island with nothing but ducks for company. I’m well keen for getting a hammock, looks so relaxing
I'd rather have watched a real survival expert out here on the dangerous Thames but this will do. Good job hunting those hotdogs
Welcome any tips and tricks for hammocking. Any small details that can make a difference to comfort and setup 👍
Great video mate enjoyed 👍🏻
Love this spot on the Thames! Great video
Seru
thank you for the video and pointing out the dive spots... very helpful to see before I visit. Well done!
Thank you for nice video!)
Im planning on going to Darnet at the weekend! I've just motorised my kayak so going to test it out. How close to high tide do you have to be to get to it? Where exactly did you launch from? I was thinking the hard stand at gillingham but is your place better? Cheers 👍
@MotoriseIt-p8m The closer to high tide the easier it will be, around 2hrs either side you will still be able to get out but it may be tricky. The hard stand at Gillingham is fine, we had aimed to launch from there but a sailing race prevented it. Good luck 👍
Interested to hear how you've motorised your kayak?
@nickcowley nice one thank you! I'll probably get there for about 3 hours pre high tide and if we have to wait it's no drama. Where was it you launched from instead? Looks like it's next to a boat yard?
@@OnTheWaterUK We launched near the Hoo Sailing Barge graveyard on the other side to Gillingham, there is a bit of public land. (not an official launch point tho)
I did three days as a youngster. In a canadian canoe
@Jason-ke2nj not been in one myself, starting to see the appeal tho, can fit so much more stuff in!
@@nickcowley can sleep on it too...and cook..like a mobile tinyhome
I'm so jealous..😊
Great video mate. Awesome fort to explore and a cracking adventure. Thought you might get attacked by a tramp. Added a bit of jeopardy to my watching experience.
@jamescreech9987 😂 sorry to disappoint with the tramp, I'll try harder for the next one
Great video mate!!!
Great video, amazing place to visit and captured excellently. Good amount of story telling and views. Can’t believe you went in that rat moat hahah. I liked the overlay of the old gun and the transitions from videos of you taking the pictures to showing the stills. I enjoyed Andy’s one line too “good burgers!” Keep up the adventures and videos
Great little trip this one! I'd be interested to hear any facts people have of the Forts.
I do a talk about the islands of the Medway which includes info on the forts. Check out some highlights on my channel
@AdamDTaylor Great presentation! I forgot how much you had to displace the water to get under the front door. Your descriptions of paddling around the lower level were spot on, I'm glad I wasn't the only one that was a little freaked out 😅
Thank you Nick 😃
Thank you @nickcowley come and see the whole version at the Medway Local History Society in January? It would be good to share some estuary knowledge with you
I have paddled this twice, and this is the first time i have seen Town lock canoe pass open...
@transsimracer5003 one of the few benefits of lots of rain fall earlier on in the year!
Always wear a PFD.
That platform in Chepstow seems quite high - can't have been easy to get out!
@teuluPaul it was close to the limit with the tide timings and a little tricky! Ideally you'd want to get there closer to high tide.
Very enjoyable 👍
That last leg from Kerne Bridge is my absolute favourite!
Love it Nick. Such a fun route. The commentary and editing is getting better and better, well done!
Thanks Chris. The 'faff' levels have gone up! You'll have to join us on the next one
Cool~~~~^^
as someone whos never kayaked but wants to start, how far away is a trip like this?
I had a years experience prior to this trip. When we did our length of the Thames trip a year before this I had only been in a kayak a handful of times too. Just need a healthy respect for the water and build as you go!
A friend and I just did Whitney on Wye to Hereford over two days in my inflatable boat. We had only been on the water once previously and we made it! The little rapids come thick and fast in low water levels so you quickly learn how to pick the best route through them.
Nice one - very informative! Is there a way to order the actual pamphlet rather than pdf?
Thank you, glad you found it useful. I'm not sure about the pamphlet, the link was directly from the Go Paddling website which didn't show anything about a physical one!
@@nickcowley oh I could have sworn I saw one in the video - perhaps you printed it out. Thank you
Wow- That was done nice cinematography!
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your video. A new subscriber.
@simondjangothe4349 Thank you for the support 👍
Great video - nice to see familiar places from the water. (Btw, Teston = TEESON)
@@RealBesty It's not the first and certainly won't be the last time I mispronounce something! Thank you for the correction
@@nickcowley Sorry for being that guy..! 🙄
Did you not notice the grey smelly water you were paddling through????
@@oldgreg1 I wouldn't choose to go through London again...
@@nickcowley Why is that? Where would you cut it?
@@jonathanmaher6663 I would keep it to the non-tidal part of the Thames, so end in Teddington. London was an experience but not the nicest part of the river to be on in a kayak!
Great tip about Kenny's Taxis. Had no idea such a thing existed.
This video has been really helpful while planning my own trip. Has the ban on launching from Glasbury been lifted now or did you just chance it?
I'm glad people are finding this useful for planning their own trips! Because we went with Kenny's taxi, we launched a bit further upstream where he has an agreement. I believe the Glas-y-Bont Common launch area is controlled by the council, which allows launching between 1000 and 1600. But I don't know if this has changed, sorry, would be interested to find out!
I'm the 100th Subscriber!!! The video was fantastic.
Thank you for the support!
Loved that, I will defo need a cup holder on my canoe.
about 2 years ago which i really enjoyed i did a canoe (inflatable) trip from Stains to Henley the some weeks later i did it from Oxford to Reading next week i will do Kemble to Oxford if it doesn't take too long... i'm thinking 3-4 days ? Nice Video guys 👍
Those are both really nice sections of the river you did! Kemble to Oxford, yeah i'd say 3-4 days. If you look in the description we listed our mileage, we took 3 days to do Kemble to Sandford lock, which is just past Oxford. The upper Thames is great, enjoy!
I rode that about 5 years ago on a mtb it was epic
Pulau yang terkenal dengan scuba diving.
Hell of tent Timelapse 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing dive site!
Great video mate!! Look forward the next one!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I think I'd end up in the water on a few of those chutes on my sit on top. Kudos to the cup holder though. Look forward to your next one.
Thank you. Amazing what you can do with a bit of foam!
Well done lads! Great trip, well filmed and narrated! Probably the best I have seen for this route. I have seen others say that that lock where you were gonna stay is a bit creepy, bad atmosphere so well done to avoid it! I now want to do this route! Cheers
Thank you, glad people are finding it useful! Get out there 👍
Great video!
❤
Enjoyed this, and will take on board the tip about Kenny’s taxis.
Bloke in the pink tutu looks like a legend
did they just dump the bikes at the start?
We preloaded a car up with the kayaks, and then were met at the launch point, bikes went into the car
