How A Ball Screw Works (Animated)
This animation shows how a recirculating ball screw works. It is important to note that this has a external return tube and there are other designs and pathways, but they functionally all work the same. Not shown are the scrubbers which close in the mechanism on either end and which prevent debris from fouling the mechanism.
This was designed and animated in SolidWorks 2020. In total there are 70 bearing balls in this animation with each having its own path mate and path mate motor. (I would love if someday SolidWorks added 3D chains)
This animation was originally intended to be longer with it going back and forth a few times, but SolidWorks put up a good fight. Hopefully you still get the...

I made this animation to show how a 3 jaw drill chuck works. Commonly known as a Jacobs Chuck. This was modeled off a $20 WARRIOR 12v Lithium-Ion 3/8" Cordless Drill/Driver from Harbor Freight but in principle all drill chucks work about the same. Animated in SolidWorks 2020. (the front outer grip should be rotating, but I could not get it to be sliced in half and rotating at the same time due ...

Trochoid pumps (AKA gerotor pumps) have some fascinating geometry and they are surprisingly easy to draw. (This was animated in SolidWorks 2017. SolidWorks does not currently allow you to live trace in animations. This was created/filmed using the built in screen recorder and hitting the calculate button. It is a frustrating workaround as you can not hide the motor arrows and the quality is not...

Inspired by AvE's video on Trochoid Pumps I tried to draw and animate one. Turns out drawing a Trochoid in SolidWorks is harder than expected.... The liquid would be pulled in from the expanding green region and pushed out in the shrinking red region. I made an animation on how to draw a Trochoid pump which can be found here ruclips.net/video/jQo2hkxQHRY/видео.html AvE's video ruclips.net/video...

What happens when I get bored studying for finals. I probably have about 7 hours into it but most of that time was spent learning how to animate and experimenting with motion so I don't consider it time wasted.

    Just curious, What are common failure points on these ball screws and how would you prevent them?

      I don't work in operations so I am no expert on how they fail, but the few I have heard about is they are a wear item so the groves and the nut can wear out which creates play (guaranteed to happen with enough use), the rod can be bent, the grease/lube can expire and dust can foul the mech.

    But I think the direction of the nut in animation is wrong. Balls are going left, then nut should go left as well. What do you think?

    • @jttv2000
      @jttv2000 Год назад

      Nope its correct. Tho this old animation has the helix opposite most screws so you can see it more clearly. The bearing balls contact with the threaded rod and the nut moves the balls through the helix "backwards" then they leapfrog to the front via the return tube. My more recent animation has the helix in the traditional orientation ruclips.net/video/oEPrXljqeHA/видео.html

    So basically each ball bearing "pushes" the nut from the screw shaft as they travel around a path, thus moving the screw in linear motion

    really awesome work (can we use path pattern in bearing to do the animation ?)

    • @jttv2000
      @jttv2000 3 года назад

      Chain mates don't allow you to select a 3d sketch and none of the other patterns would help as they don't add useful mates. And you cant even copy and paste a ball with a path as that is a "advanced mate" even though you just select a point and a line. So the only way i have found to do it is add 70 individual path mates with a precise starting location. Then do 70 individual path mate motors. It sucks and it really puts a strain on the computer, but to be honest SolidWorks was never made to do this.

      You could look up some more thorough animations yourself if you’re still interested. There’s tons of tutorials out there, and services like Brilliant, Masterclass, Skillshare, The Great Courses, etc. which you can use to easily teach yourself through. Each site has its own free trial program, so you can find what you want to know for free.
