Walker Simpson's family have been involved with Lifeboats in Donaghadee, County Down since 1910. He served as a mechanic from the 1970s, supporting the volunteer crew of Lifeboats including the historic Sir Samuel Kelly. He describes the life he loved.

RNLI video commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Fastnet Tragedy 1979

On 11 August 1979. a terrible storm disrupted a yacht race close to Fastnet rock at the southern tip of the Republic of Ireland. The Sir Samuel Kelly Lifeboat, then stationed at Courtmacsherry near Cork, was one of 13 Lifeboats sent to save lives. Despite the best efforts of all Lifeboats and crew, 21 lives were lost.     I remember "helping" with the restoration of this boat on its arrival back at Donaghadee. My neighbour, George, a fantastic man, was a member of RNLI in the Dee and allowed me and my sister to accompany him to scrape paint and brush the decks. Nearly 40 years later, the boat is still there, as is George
