Jack Straw
Добавлен 26 фев 2007
Howdy! And a (laurel and) hearty welcome to Jack Straw's musical log cabin on the hillside! 🎶 This is where Jack puts the 'hoe' back in hoedown, the 'hok' smack dab in hokey and the 'corn' straight into corny. Cozy up by the campfire to wander the winding paths of acoustic melodies and foot-stomping tunes as The Strawman demonstrates his Trademark, Patented, Copyrighted, Trade Secret protected 'Slap-Chunk' guitar style while blowing some bluesy harmonica.
From the old-time charm of traditional folk ballads and country tunes to the good vibrations of some vintage pop hits, this channel will bring to life the songs of yore. Come along on a magical journey through the valleys and rolling hillsides of melody and harmony, where every chord vibrates with a story and each note echos with whispers of the past.
Together, let's keep the folk tradition strong, one song at a time.

Walk the Streets of Glory – Old-Time gospel spiritual hymn acoustic guitar & vocal by Jack Straw
Also called: Some of These Days, I'm Going down to the River of Jordan, River of Jordan or I'm Going to Walk the Streets of Glory, Streets of Glory or just plain Glory. It goes back to the mid-1800s. Belongs to 'Jordan' family of African-American spirituals which includes Roll, Jordan, Roll. Streets of Glory replaced River of Jordan in many later versions.
My version is a mix of Ramblin' Jack Elliot and the Carter Family.
Lyrics:
I’m gonna walk the Streets of Glory, oh, yes
I’m gonna walk the Streets of Glory one of these days, hallelujah
I’m gonna walk the Streets of Glory
Gonna walk the Streets of Glory one of these days
I'm going down to the river of Jordan, oh, yes
I'm going down to the river...

This is from Ralph Peer's famous July 1927 Bristol, Tennesse recording sessions. It was recorded by Uncle Eck Dunford & Hattie Stoneman (whose husband was Ernest) with Iver Edwards. The only other versions I know of are The Bogtrotters and by Wade Ward both of which are called Cold Icy Floor with different versions but share similarities. I went back and forth on which to recorded and went form...

First released on Robert Hunter's Tales Of The Great Rum Runners in 1974. Then by Jerry Garcia on his 1976 Reflections LP. The Grateful Dead included it on the Steal Your Face album later in '76 as well. It is often credited as a Garcia/Hunter song, however, Garcia's is not listed as a co-composer on his own Reflections album. It is purely a Robert Hunter creation. One of two songs the Dead did...

The origins of this song are more than a bit hazy but can be traced back to the 1800's. It was published as part of a medley called Blind Boone's Southern Rag Medley No. One: Strains from the Alleys in 1908 (Got to love that: Strains from the Alleys!! A true definition of folk music if I ever heard one!!). Then in 1911 various versions of the lyrics were published in an academic journal of ethn...

An early rock classic recorded by Eddie Cochran in 1958. It was co-written Eddie his manager Jerry Capehart. As with any classic, covers abound. Too fun of a song not to take a crack at! You gotta work late" So...

A composition by Charles D. Tillman and M.E. Abbey that was publish 1890. It was first recorded by Edward Allen and Charles Hart in 1918. The list of country performers who have NOT recorded it is a lot shorter than the one's who have. If you can think of one, they have more than likely done it. It has been done as an instrumental as well. My version follows George Reneau's 1924 recording but w...

Bob Dylan wrote this in 1967 and his version was released in 1971 on the Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II album. Another version, which had been recorded with the Band in 1967) was later included on the Basement Tapes album in 1975. The lyrics differ between the 2 versions. I always think of this song as the sister song of ruclips.net/video/A_oCItLGeoY/видео.html

this brings back memories, so I was cruising down the highway blasting "It's All Over Now" by the Rolling Stones, right? Totally feeling like a rockstar in my beat-up Honda Accord. And then, out of nowhere, this dude in a convertible pulls up next to me, sunglasses on, trying to out-rock me or something. So, naturally, I crank up the volume, thinking I'm all cool. But here's the kicker: I forgot my windows were down! So not only did I blast Mick Jagger's voice straight into my own face at maximum decibels, but I also practically gave the guy in the convertible a private concert. He looked over at me like I'd lost my marbles, and I just grinned and nodded like, "Yeah, I meant to do that." Anyway, moral of the story: always check your windows before you unleash your inner rockstar, folks.
Great story! And a moral to be heeded!
I learned this song from my mom way back in the 60’s when I was about 5 years old! LOL! Just one of those songs you learn when you’re a kid! I was actually reminiscing and thinking about this song recently! Thanks for sharing it here on RUclips!
Thanks for the comment! Yea, it is funny we sing this folk tunes to kids when the content is definitely not G rated! Ha! Ha! Ha! You and me, Little Brown Jug don't I love thee?
let me tell you about the wildest, most impossible thing that ever happened to me. I mean, it's so out there that I still can't believe it myself. I met Jim Croce. I know, I know-he's been dead for ages, and it makes no sense at all, but hear me out. This is how it went down. So, I’m at this tiny, old-school bar in town. It’s got that whole retro vibe, with vinyl records on the walls and dim, moody lighting. The kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back into the 70s. I had a gig there, playing my usual set of folk and classic rock covers. It was a quiet night, just a handful of people sipping their drinks, mostly ignoring me. I’m mid-set, playing “Operator” by-you guessed it-Jim Croce. I’ve always loved that song. I’m lost in the music, really pouring my heart into it, when I notice this guy at the back of the room. He’s got the classic 70s look: thick mustache, sideburns, and a vest over his shirt. He looked like he stepped right off the cover of an old album. And he’s staring right at me. At first, I think he’s just another barfly. But then he starts singing along. His voice…oh man, his voice is perfect. It’s like Jim Croce himself is harmonizing with me. I almost mess up the chords because I’m so freaked out. After my set, I see him walking over. My heart is racing. He’s got this grin, a friendly but kind of knowing look in his eyes. He says, “You’ve got a great voice, kid. Reminds me of someone I used to know.” I’m floored. This guy even sounds like Jim Croce. We start talking, and he introduces himself as Jim. No last name, just Jim. I’m trying to keep my cool, but inside, I’m freaking out. I mean, could it be? I have to ask, so I blurt out, “Jim Croce?” He chuckles and says, “I’ve been known by that name.” I know, it’s completely nuts. I should’ve been running for the hills, but there was something about him that made me stay. He starts sharing these stories, tales of the road, writing songs, and the crazy characters he met. Every word feels like a page from a history book or a scene from a movie. I’m hanging on every word, trying to figure out if I’m dreaming or if this guy is just a phenomenal storyteller. I can’t hold back anymore. I ask him, point-blank, “How can this be? Jim Croce died in a plane crash in 1973.” He looks at me, dead serious, and says, “Maybe in your world. But music-real music-never dies. It just finds new ways to keep living.” I’m standing there, feeling like I’m in the Twilight Zone. We end up playing a couple of songs together. He picks up my guitar and starts strumming “I Got a Name.” The whole bar goes silent. It’s just him and me, making music like it’s the most natural thing in the world. I’ve never felt anything like it. It’s like he’s channeling the spirit of Jim Croce right through his fingers. After what feels like both an eternity and a blink of an eye, he says he has to go. He gives me this look and says, “Keep playing, kid. The music needs you.” And then he’s gone. I don’t even see him leave. One moment he’s there, the next, he’s vanished. I’m left standing there, holding my guitar, wondering if I’ve just lost my mind. Maybe it was a ghost, a dream, or some kind of magical encounter. But whatever it was, it was real to me. And it was amazing. I know it sounds impossible. How could I have met Jim Croce? He’s been gone for decades. But that night, in that bar, I felt like I got a glimpse into something bigger than me, bigger than all of us. It was like the music itself came to life and decided to have a chat. And I’m not sure what to make of it, but one thing’s for sure-I’ll never forget it.
That is so cool. Music-real music-never dies! so true, so true!
Nice Energy
Thanks!

Great job and great song! First song I ever learned on guitar 🎸
Sounds great well played mate 💯
Appreciate the comment.
I think some software setting is suppressing your guitar sounds.😊
Thanks Gavin. Trying different things to see what works as I have only been at uploading for some 90 days now. What software are you using to record? You are getting good sound and been at it a while.
@@jackstrawvibes I haven't got the best sounding rooms, so mic my voice and instruments separately to keep room sounds out of my recordings, and use a two channel usb adapter. Mic-wise, I've found a cheap stage dynamic mic with some foam can work well for vocals, and you will be able to find a video about that. For guitar, I think an sE V7x is great on guitar, if I place it 10in from the join or 12th fret and aim it at the end of my fingerboard. Software-wise, I use Reaper and have found the Reaper instruction RUclipss very useful.
