Townleyhall Summer Solstice Solar Alignment

Townleyhall passage tomb is located just north of the large passage tombs at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. It is smaller and more basic in design than it's bigger neighbours. On the mornings around the Summer Solstice, Townleyhall is a special place with the passage and chamber aligned with the rising sun.

    Hi. Planning on seeing this in July. I see a sign on google maps pointing to a gated lane. Do you get through that gate to get to the one in your video? I hate to get all the way there and not know how to access it. Thanks!

      I don't recall any problems accessing the dolmen when I visited 2 years ago although I see a notice on Google maps from the owner which would suggest there are current issues : The farmland the Dolmen resides on is still private property. Drones CAN and WILL be shot down and destroyed .....

    The true indicator is where the shadow is not where the light is. This is the best by far video of the Cairn T Equinox progression. Thank you so much for doing this right. Thank you.

    Hello, has anyone remarked on how like different stages of plant growth some of the "flower" like symbols look like? Would it be a stretch to suggest that a building that lights up Spring and Autumn would have the gardening instructions on its wall?

    @ardaraith The dark square is the shadow of a notice plaque that was on the railing at the entrance to the chamber. Thankfully the notice plaque has since been removed, so the illumination on the backstone no longer has the dark square.

  • @ardaraith

    What is making the dark square in the lower left of the light?

    ……. Thank you, knowthyt, for this upload. Thank YOU, young Magus, for the heads-up it's here. When I visitted Newgrange I wish I'd've known about Loughcrew as well. Incredible structures. Funnily enough, 'we' were supposedly wearing animal skins & living in primitive structures when these enigmatic observatories were tracking the movement of the seasons, the sun, the moon, the stars, & the planets. Who REALLY built them? ~ (•8-o

    • @liberalirishman1425
      @liberalirishman1425 5 лет назад

      Are you claiming the wearing of animal skin prevents you from observing the sky, don't be so ridiculous. These people were far more intelligent than you may believe.

    I think of a cairn as a dome, stone or wood. Newgrange is stone covered with a lawn put on top isn't it? I somehow doubt it had a lawn on it in its hay day, but again we do not know. There may be a surprise there. For all way know there may have been hydroponic gardens all around like the hanging gardens of Babylon. Nice thought, but pure fiction at this stage :-)

  • @BoyneValleyTours
    @BoyneValleyTours 14 лет назад

    I thought about using the term "cairn" instead of "tomb", but that might bring more confusion because a cairn is normally a stone covered site.

  • @JohnWillmott
    @JohnWillmott 14 лет назад

    I suppose I am cautious and just use the word "cairn" to leave it open for visitors to create their own story from their feelings along with what they may have read that they could connect to. I once used the word "temple" but thought that was going too far, though our vision of "temple" today is very different to the time of the ancient word "teampall", just as "city" today is very different to its ancient word "cille", and in the USA a city does not even relate to a sacred place

  • @BoyneValleyTours
    @BoyneValleyTours 14 лет назад

    I share your view on the "Tomb" tag. Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest.

  • @JohnWillmott
    @JohnWillmott 14 лет назад

    Good to provide a review trailer for the DVD here, nice production. I always have a personal conflict with the word "tombs" being used with these ancient monuments. Eventually they were used as tombs, I suspect because of convenience, but were they originally built for that? . Hard to believe so much living time was dedicated and used up by so many people to prepare a structure for dying. Do we spend a huge chunk of our time on earth today preparing for our passing? There's much more here.

    My guess is that this is how major seasonal markets were coordinated. Everyone knew when the equinox was coming but this avoided confusion about when trading should open etc. Like today artistic and religious aspects of the gathering were included but the market needed tight co-ordination to minimize conflicts.
