nice build right there but how did you get the paddles to be printed that thin? you can practically see through the paddles. didnt know a printer can actually print that thin lol. nice video.
Nice! worked well :) Thanks for the shout out
very cool :) did you have to beef up the arms for this?
I was just gentle winding it up. I went as far as I dared 😁 If I was going to try it over a longer distance, then I think it would need to be a bit stronger, but in the bath it was good enough. I squeezed the video into portrait mode, so you can't tell how far it goes, but the length of the bath is well below it's capabilities.
Aw man I just bought one and I’m scared it won’t work and my mom spent her money on it😕
That depends on how you define "working". It flies a bit, but it is not likely to disappear into the distance miles away. Not every configuration works, some work better than others. It is intended to help you learn about trimming the settings and trying different layouts to see what works best. If you don't try, you will never know.
Hmmm, maybe stiffer and larger rubberbands can make it go further. Also lighter and larger wheels can help increase the distance
Hi, Lynn. Yes, larger stiffer rubber bands would give it a faster burst of power. However, soft hobby grade rubber as used in model aeroplanes would allow more turns so it would run for longer. A more aerodynamic propeller would help, too. The difference in wheels is demonstrated in the video. The toy car wheels certainly reduced the distance travelled👍
That's a nice looking car
Thanks, inspired by the kits I could see on eBay. With proper rubber it would probably go further. Those cheap rubber bands are "cheap" 🤣🤣
nice video.that worked really well with the cd,s.😀😀👍.
I did try a different propeller that I had laying around, but it didn't improve the performance so I didn't include it in the video 👍👍
Dayum creative
nice build and it really works too.i think you can use that on a frozen up lake and let that go on the ice since the front bit skates along thr ground
I was disappointed, I thought it would go better.
Bottle caps made of wax! 🤣I like your 3 strip of tape method @60 degrees
Just soft plastic 👍👍
nice video grandad, thats goes quiet well actually, awesome stuff..
I thought I would do a few simple basic cars with no 3D printed parts and no special tools.
WoW, I will try
I usually just save the batteries from vapes, but when I noticed these I instantly thought of car tyres
Loving the design work here, very nice
Thanks 😊😊
nice build, and it works great
When I saw these parts in the vapes I wanted to do something useful with them.
Made for some nice tires :)

Hey Grandad did you design it? I'm asking because I would like to design a air engine. new at this
@JustFun-iz9rf Yes, I use Tinkercad for all my 3d designs. It is free to use. In effect, you create things by putting together basic building blocks.
That’s cool
I want to make a really small one. Does it work on any scale?
That would be something you would find out when you try it. It would depend very much on what weight you use for the swinging ball. The mass gives you the inertia. The other 3 balls are more or less just for visual effect.
@@Putarubberbandonit Thanks
Oh thats cool. I was a bit confused at first but im glad i watched to the end
@@LarryReedVT it made me smile 😁
Totally different designing with a 3D printer, isn't it? Now you need to become an expert at solid modeling.
@@horrido666 This is not my design. I just downloaded it from Thingiverse 👍
For a second I thought you were going to consider the door mat run as the camera hitting run, neat looking car
@spencer963 once it started to loosen up, it was running fine. Silicone spray worked well as a lubricant 👍
great video grandad and it really works, kool idea. cute little project this was. 👍👍
I was pleased I managed to get it running. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to work.
That's a Cool idea
@@RaakeshV it was cheating, taking Cds with me on holiday. I have used beer mats/coasters for wheels in the past 🙂
@@Putarubberbandonit Beer mats for wheels? That's some next-level engineering! I'm guessing the car runs on lager fuel too? 🍺🚗

@MaxImagination Thanks, Max. It's a re-edit of one of my old videos from 2013 😊
Cool! Thanx for sharing!
Was that your first attempt at hitting the camera? Super straight driving car
Second attempt 😁😁👍👍
My car keeps going right or left. Do you have any suggestions?
1. Does the car run straight when you just push it without the rubber power? If it doesn't run straight without power, then your axles are out of alignment. That could the axles are not parallel or they may be twisted, so one wheel is not on the ground, so it runs on 3 wheels. 2. When you wind up the motor, the tension may be distorting the body, causing the axles to go out of alignment, with the same effect as "1" above. 3. If you wind the rubber unevenly across the axle, the tension can pull the axle out of alignment. 4. Lack of grip. If the wheels spin, instead of moving forward, that can cause the car to turn. Add tyres to the wheels or add some weight to improve the grip. 5. Both wheels on the same axle must be the same diameter.

What is the goal of this experimentation? You mentioned RC cars, are you making RC cars with CDs as wheels?
If you have ever built a rubber powered car using CDs for wheels you will know that it is easy to overpower them and get wheelspin. The simple fix is to cut strips from balloons or rubber gloves to put tyres on the CDs improving their grip. I happen to have a 3D printer and a reel of TPU which is a soft rubber like filament, so I thought I would print the tyres instead. As for RC cars I have made them with CDs for wheels, but only "because I can" rather than any specific purpose. The RC car I printed the tyres for is in this playlist - RC car Mondo Motors 1:10 RC PORSCHE 918 ruclips.net/p/PLA5a2xPRSrB058Ig-TR8csXGgGmnL5soH You will find other related links in the video description, including "putting tyres on CDs" and "RC rubber powered cars" 👍👍
confused, surely a cd could be easily turned into pointy grippy treds
I guess that you are destined to stay confused until you try it for yourself 🤔 Don't forget to post a video when you do it 👍
@@Putarubberbandonit Huh... I just checked your channel with the amount of videos. I'll take your word for it. I assume there would be no grip or the cd would shatter or too much vibration
I guess little sharp grooves would only work on a slightly malleable surface
@GilesCuckow I am not trying to compare my cars to a Formula 1 race car, but do you notice any spikes on their tyres?? There is a reason 😁👍However, you have hit on an interesting mathematical conundrum when calculating friction. The surface area does not affect the friction 🤔 so why do race cars have fat tyres?
Yeah... I really didn't think about that, a formula one car with treaded tyres would shake itself to death, I suppose you are making miniature scale models of a race design. I had a dream of this last night strangely if a tank track design which could capture the original burst of energy into weight on the tracks which could give longer momentum at a lower speed, but that's not your aim I'm assuming. Is your main goal to get the most amount of speed and power for a short duration in the most efficient way?
Looks cool, but even your most hastly made (non kit) rbc probably goes further than this.
I am sure it would go further, I only tested it with two rubber bands and there were 4 on there from whoever did the original build, however I found it too awkward to get my fingers in there to attach the bands. Obviously designed for smaller hands 😁😁
Fantastic idea.
It is quicker and cheaper to use a strip cut from a rubber glove or a balloon, but obviously I have a 3D printer and a spool of TPU so I had to give it a try 😁😁 Mk 2 is a little thicker so it grips the CD better. I expect it will probably lose it's elasticity over time.
@Putarubberbandonit that's an interesting point. I don't think I've ever seen anyone test the elasticity of TPU over time. I just printed stuff with it, and they sit on a shelf. Lol
Very satisfying results!
I obviously had too much time on my hands 🤣 Mk 2 is a bit fatter and holds the edge of the CD better 👍
Is it hard printing?
If your printer settings are right, you shouldn't have any problems.
Yes I can remember hours of fun with those as a kid. Also cotton bobbin rubber band and two match sticks rubber band through the bobbin match sticks either end. Time flies by when you're having fun.
that flew nicely :)
I am sure I could put more turns on the motor, but we were on holiday and there would be no chance of replacing the rubber if it snapped. If the weather settle down again, I will give it another go, maybe lubricate the motor first so I can push it a bit further.
@@Putarubberbandonit Enjoy your all's vacation!
It looks like a flyer to me, but yes I agree, those wings should be solidly mounted
nice video,not really working tho.
Yes, it doesn't have enough power.
Well I was gonna make one long time ago but I think I will leave this design. Thanks for sharing
I think this one is simply too short for a decent length of rubber motor. I have built other similar kits but they were significantly longer and worked relatively well. Here are a couple:- ROG Rubber Band Powered Helicopter ruclips.net/video/yrcl3WkwpbI/видео.html Rubber Power Helicopters ruclips.net/video/yFfhMiJ2AZE/видео.html
Fun toy, I would not only agree with you that it needs a longer stick, but to improve it the most it would need a counter rotating rotor on the other side of the stick, or since you've probably only got one of that specific rotor you could affix a couple of vanes left and right of the fuselage (as close to cg as possible) that act on the downwash to oppose some of the torque spinning the body up. Lots of lift is lost with the copter spinning about like that.
