Hi, does the ethanol have to be sterile/autoclaved before use?
According to Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol are not effective in sterilizing instruments because they lack sporicidal activity and can’t penetrate protein-rich materials. Isopropyl alcohol also lacks the ability to kill hydrophilic viruses. For these reasons, alcohol is classified as an intermediate level disinfectant. That is why we use autoclaves, gas sterilizers, hot beads, flames, chemicals or boiling water to properly sterilize the equipment. We use 70% and not higher percentages of ethanol, since 70% ethanol is better for disinfecting. It has more water, which helps it to dissolve more slowly, penetrate cells, and kill bacteria. Alcohol makes some bacteria and virus inactive because it lowers the water activity. Higher % Ethanol evaporates too quickly and is not effective when alcohol is lower than 70% is considered as 'too wet'. In cell culture we usually combine 70% ethanol and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) to sterilise surfaces, disposables, and microbiological safety cabinets.

Hey there! I would like to ask, for REPROCELL’s cell manufacturing service, are the MSCs grown in a closed or open system? Is there a page where I can look into how these cells are manufactured while establishing the cell bank? I’ve come across the Stemchymal AD-MSCs in my own research and am wondering how the cells were cultured for both the Taiwan and Japan clinical trials. A paper that I’ve come across in 2017 (Treatment of Spinocerebellar Ataxia with MSCs: A phase I/IIa Clinical Study) did not indicate the nature of how these cells were grown, whether if it was in a strict GMP suite and if the system was open or closed.
