The main point of this patch was to play with the Bastl Popcorn sequencer and also to use the Synthwerks Quad Slide Pot module as a kind of macro-controller to transition between parts of the song. Really nice demo, but the sounds of this module are quite rough compared to what's possible with a digital module. I am working on an analog synthesizer or a rack module which sounds much more usable and natural. BBD delays such as one used in this module have several (partly fixable) flaws that make them not directly usable for Karplus-Strong synthesis or even audio delays. First of all is that they rely on switching, and quantize the sound in time domain, which means they introduce a ton of aliasing, which has to be removed with a low pass filter, which in turn cuts the usable frequency range to roughly 10kHz (for MN3207). Second, they in their very nature act as low pass filters with -6dB/dec slope past roughly 1kHz. This can be partly compensated with a precisely constructed high shelf filter in the feedback loop at the cost of higher distortion. The third issue is very poor dynamic range, which has already been remedied in many delay effects with a compandor such as SA571D. Lastly, the harmonic distortion of those devices is quite high, especially at higher frequencies, but it can be considered as an actual charm that gives the sound its uniqueness. Therefore, without the above mentioned improvements, a trivial design with just a BBD, filter and gain in a feedback loop will sound rather poorly at higher frequencies, large noise and will greatly suffer from the lack of highs, regardless of the pitch being generated.

      @@cybermortal1983 Just came across this video as I was checking out reviews on the Viol Ruina. This video kind of changed my mind in picking it up as a filter, so I appreciate that! I see that you mentioned the AI Synthesis OTA Filter. Are you a big fan of it as a filter? Also, my main question is, have you had a chance to check out the new AI Synthesis VCF, the X Filter? I'm also extremely interested in it, as it uses a similar topology as Sequential Circuits. Unlike the OTA filter, the new X filter only has a lpf mode. If you have checked it out yet, any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      @@alexandermontagnet3361 I do really like the AI Synthesis OTA filter. It has a lot of character plus the resonance gets pretty chaotic at higher levels which I enjoy. I haven't tried the x-filter, but cv over resonance and a smaller footprint seem like an OK trade for loss of the high pass mode. Don't think you can go wrong either way, especially if you have some DIY skills. AI Synthesis kits are very well documented and easy to build.

    • @cybermortal1983
      @cybermortal1983 3 года назад

      you can but I believe it breaks the normalization of the module (sorry I no longer have the module so I cannot test it). Basically, if you wanted three seperate flavors of distortion for the same sound you could achieve this by sending the sound to a mult (or using stacked cables or whatever) and putting it into each input, then taking each individual output. Alternatively you can use different sounds in each input and have 3 distinct distortions etc. It's a lot of distortions in 4hp.

    • @cybermortal1983
      @cybermortal1983 3 года назад

      Hey, great question. The answer is yes, but with limitations. I regret not patching it this way in the video, but I just tested it and it will produce a delay effect depending on the position of the tune and feedback faders. With tune all the way down, the "time" of the delay will be higher, but still pretty fast. Feedback will determine the number of echos. As the tune fader gets higher you can no longer hear the time between the echoes. I would say that it's not enough to fill the role of a delay effect and it does color the sound considerably, but it might be useful especially for short percussive sounds. I tested it with some short sounds from the manis iteritas and it was pretty cool.
