    Hi Robert! I'm a transfer student as well, I'll be starting at UCLA in the fall. When you said you prioritized your college experience more than your academics, are you referring to things like extracurriculars or parties/friends? I plan on being involved in a handful of extracurriculars like I was in CC but I'm sure things are a bit different at a 4 year uni. Also, I'm a rising junior, when do you recommend for me to take the DAT if I plan on applying to schools in June of 2024? I'm a first gen college student and first in my family to pursue anything in healthcare so it's a pretty daunting process.

I was wondering if I can apply to both type of programs to ultimately get into dental schools. Also, do you need to retake DAT when you finish post bacc program? Are there any programs that does not require dat scores when you're applying for dental schools after post bacc?

      Hey Grant! I would look on AADSAS to ensure you meet the requirements of each school- or the schools you wish to apply to. Usually they require at least 2 science professors, and a dentist that you have shadowed/worked with. You can opt out to submit individual letters even if your school offered a committee letter, however, I believe dental school prefer you to use a committee letter if your college offers it!

      Hey Khadija, thanks for the comment. I am not sure how to transfer school for a master program, I only transferred for a bachelors degree. If you are applying to U.S schools any degree works as long as you fulfill the program prerequisite science and math classes, and do well in them! As for your other question- I think it really depends on what you like. Peds is a rewarding speciality but you would also need to perform well in dental school -as with any speciality really. I would shadow a couple of pediatric dentist to see if this is what you really want to do!

    • @robertzhouDDS
      @robertzhouDDS 2 года назад

      I think it really depends! while the DAT is a factor many dental schools look, it's not the only factor. I would definitely consider retaking the DAT and aiming for a minimum of 20AA. Since there is an increase in DAT scores over the years, I would say 20AA is now the minimum to be competitive. Great job on your GPA though! that's not easily to achieve!

    How much do dentists make? What’s the best career to become very rich?

    • @robertzhouDDS

      This question depends on multiple factors like experience, location, and specialty. Generally speaking, new dentist can make around 125-150k. However, like I said before it varies! While this career is very fulfilling, you are are looking to build wealth, there are plenty of other options you can explore. Dentistry is takes at least 6-8 years of education after high school and the education journey is very costly.

    Thank you for this video, we (my husband) is going through the same thing. For three years he has been trying to get into dental school but due to COVID he was unable to take any DAT tests, his appointment to take the test got canceled twice. When he finally took the DAT in October, it was his first try and received score of 19. sadly he did not get any acceptance letters to any schools. We are trying again this year, we are very scared for the same thing to happen again.... it feels discouraging and makes you stop and think if this is the right career but knowing him this is the only career he loves and is passionate about. we are not sure what to do if we don't get it but this video helps a lot. We are not sure what Committee letter you were speaking about, We have never heard of that. If you can clarify what that is we would be grateful. Again we are on the same path that you have been on, year after year getting rejected and its beginning to look like its faith. we refuse to give up but it is heart breaking to consider the same outcome. if there are any resources or websites you can share with us to help us know better about how the applications for dental schools work, what they are looking for or whatever we would appreciate it!!!

    • @robertzhouDDS
      @robertzhouDDS 2 года назад

      Hi Naira thank you for this thoughtful post! I happy to hear that your husband (and you) can relate to this video. The journey to dental school is not an easy thing, that's for sure. But if this is what he really wants I think, in time, it will happen! Sit down to understand what the areas of weakness are in his application and try to bolster them in the best way possible. Sometimes it is best to not apply cycle after cycle unless there are substantial improvements or changes from the previous cycle. A committee letter is a letter from the institution (usually the college or university) that the prospective applicant applies for and is used for the AADSAS application. This letter is different from LOR (letters of recommendations) because it is written in a more neutral tone and impartial. Not all colleges or undergrads offer this committee letter - therefore its not necessary to have this but is highly recommended to use it if your institution does offer it. If you have more questions, feel free to reach me personally and perhaps we can set up a time to discuss how to improve the application process for your spouse! Feel free to reach me via Instagram or email!

    hello. I have only just checked out UCLA dental school and they noted that they don't accept transfer students and yet hold pre-dental programs for international students.I'm just wondering and a little confused, are these programs like colleges with 100% admission ? Note: Sorry for raising these type of questions it's just that I've never lived in the US let alone get through a university

    • @robertzhouDDS
      @robertzhouDDS 2 года назад

      Hi Sam- I'm not sure what you mean by "they don't accept transfer students". I know UCLA's undergraduate schools will accept transfer students, UCLA and the UC system is fantastic in taking in transfer students from CC's or other colleges. For their dental school, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd say MOST dental schools don't accept transfer students- people don't usually transfer to another dental school after their second or first year. Even those few schools that do, it is under very unusual circumstances. Now if you are a transfer student from Community College (CC) to a 4-year university, most dental schools will accepts those "transfer students" as long you meet the schools prerequisites. I think Tufts and Boston university dental schools are more particular in accepting transfer students. Pre-dental programs - like summer enrichment programs, post-baccs..etc- almost never guarantee admissions. There are some pre-dental programs that places you in an accelerated track which greatly increases your chances into admission to that particular school if you meet certain requirements -like GPA and DAT scores. Other those programs, nothing is really 100% admissions. Hope this helps!

      @@robertzhouDDS Thanks for your thorough response Robert You clued me in on Premed programs when you mention post-baccalaureate since I thought as much. I know that UCLA takes Biology major transfer (prerequisite). But this is exactly what they say: '' The UCLA School of Dentistry does not accept transfer students. All applicants must be in possession of their dental degree when applying to the program. Students who have not completed their dental degree will need to apply to the 4-year D.D.S. program. " which doesn't make any sense, like why would anyone want to transfer to a UC when they hold a degree :)

    • @robertzhouDDS
      @robertzhouDDS 2 года назад

      Hey Amy! I'd say I spent quite some time working and drafting each response for the questionnaire. I would write a long paragraph and then narrow it down to two- three sentences since I recall there was a small word limit. I didn't want to take long to respond but also did not want to compromise the quality of the questionnaire. Overall, I believe I took 3 days to submit the response. I believe the school sends you a link to submit your responses, it was not through email. I remember drafting my responses through google docs and then uploading to the link they sent me. The strategy I used (depending on the question) was to reach out the dental students at UOP, read more into the school's mission and values, and design experiences that I feel best aligned with the school. One advice I would suggest is to not always try to fit into the schools values, rather see how your values aligns with the schools. This will make you stand out a bit more :)
