November is all about trimming bushes and trees. We’ll also take a look at the winter garden. Then there was something weird in my bushes. Take a quick look at what I found.

Not quite what I expected. Hopefully next year, the Spotted Lantern Flies will leave the roses alone. Perhaps starting earlier in the season will also help.

Yet another sunny day! Let’s take a short walk.

Again, pure sun for two weeks. Let’s use it! Prepping for eco-printing. Using natural dyes in solar teas, in this case madder root (Rubia tinctorum). The winter garden beds are also in the sunniest locations. More plans are in the works. My online store is www.ursulas-alcove.com

There was a huge line of showers that mysteriously broke apart right before they were supposed to hit us. Walk with me in the September garden to see what’s up. The heat definitely affected production. The lack of rain hurt too. Fall gardening looks to be a better bet.

Trying a new dye and a new dyeing method. Bear with me as I struggle to use the correct terminology. Correction: I meant to say the Stock Solution is 1:100 There are 10 g of dye to 1000 ml. Doh! The dye I’m using is Greener Shades. The solar oven is an old Solavore, no longer in business. Sun Ovens makes a better oven. But nightshade has such beautiful flowers! Wow, a species hammer! Our low was 63 this morning--set a record for the day for the warmest low ever. Good luck getting rain soon.
❤Beautiful
Yea, rain!! I agree about the resist. Must have Oomph in the bath, lol! We're under a burn ban, too. Better luck next year!
🤞 Hoping you got a good soaking!
@@jeanneclark99 It was over in 15 minutes. Only 70% of the sidewalk was wet. It got windy and we were treated to a cloudless sky. I watered yet again.
@@lindalisting7338 Darn it. I'm sorry.
Interesting to point out during auroras we have stronger than normal sun energy.
Projects just never end, do they? Better than being bored! Take care.
I hope the day went well. You have some beautiful purples!
@@jeanneclark99 I had the best conversations with people! It was awesome to talk about ancient rugs and natural dyes, ethnic traditions in fiber, so many discussions. The people are truly amazing!
@@lindalisting7338 🤗
Outdoor event --> you're under canvas --> you didn't have to put up/take down the tent. Yea!! I hope you did well!
@@jeanneclark99 It’s a great show plus it’s at a dairy so there’s ice cream! 🍦
@@lindalisting7338 That's perfect! I wish I lived closer!!
Prickly pear is edible. I collect water/juice jugs/bottles and store as much water as possible in those for winter. We're 3 inches down, rainwise, so our drought is just starting. Good luck with your drought!
Purple!!
I love gradation. These are beautiful. Did you purchase your solar oven and, if so, from where? If not, how did you make it? I really like the look of this method of dyeing and the idea of the safe dyes. Makes me want to get into dyeing!
@@jeanneclark99 I do have one I made from cardboard, aluminum foil and glass but I bought this one from Solavore 20 years ago. The Solavore company went out of business but you can check out SunOven.com They have a superior product to my old clunker. They are fantastic for cooking outside when it’s too hot to even think about turning on your stove. I’ve made everything from bread, cookies, roasts, and baked squash.
@@lindalisting7338 Thank you, Ma'am!
You can figure out how!
@@RickLarsonPermacultureDesigner yes, but first some tree limbs have to come down. It’s been unusually hot and cutting limbs on Midsummer’s already damaged 2 trees.
So sorry!

Sorry about the lack of rain. Hopefully you have had some by now!
@@jeanneclark99 We got a whole 5 minutes of rain last night.
I've tried commenting on this video twice but anyway lets hope for rain.
There is hope. We now have a 60% chance on Saturday.
Love the video ❤
@@GardeningWithCoffee Thank you
I like your lid lifter. Always amazes me what a difference the mordants make. Cheers!
It could be a peanut in your potato bag. Eggplants are one of my favorite vegetables but the flea beetles are to ravenous so I don't get to grow them. We are also having no rain and 100 degree weather. Blue flowers may be chicory, in the tower. Hopefully all our plans to deter animals in our gardens will come to fruition and actually work.
Chicory is the deer’s favorite food. It’s growing at the end of the block. They are just sticks left in the ground. My bad, I wasn’t clear in the video. I also planted my extra flowers in the top of the tower. I thought the stalks might be the extra flowers, but the deer ate these too. Johnnies Catalog says that Endives are also chicory. Huh, didn't know that.
Lol. I hope you had a clothespin for your nose! Good luck.
@@jeanneclark99 No, it didn’t smell bad. It had a scoby on top which I skimmed off. Madder root must be fermented in order to get a red color instead of orange. I have had others that stunk. Vinegar usually takes care of it.
I like the church bells. I like the coxcomb, too. I'm sorry you grew Swiss cheese! How cool about the baby hummingbird. I hope you had a good Pennsic.
Did your booth get soggy? How about BMHD-related folk? Yup, tiny marigold. The borage is pretty. Sorry about the deer. Pretty orange and blue at the end; no messing with lightning!
@@jeanneclark99 Facebook is loaded with flooding pictures. Water had drained and parking lots were open at 10 this morning.
Looks nice and sunny; hopefully it stays that way! Have fun and fantastic sales.
I'm sorry there is no water for the animals. So sorry about your out-front tomatoes, sweet potatoes, chard, and beets. Yea for the out-back tomatoes, beans, radishes, basil, amaranth, and persimmon! Rose of Sharon is on the Indiana invasives list; I don't know about PA. Have fun--and good luck--at Pennsic!
@@jeanneclark99 Thanks! I'll be running a Pennsic video once my new display units arrive and are setup. Storms predicted all this week. Don't know about actual rain. Rose of Sharon is definitely invading my yard. Until we have actual rain, I'm commuting to Pennsic to water each night. We are borderline moderate to severe drought. Don't need to mimic California.
I'm sorry about you tomatoes...A thought occurred to me that if they dislike the dill do you think an infusion of dill seeds sprayed on the foliage might deter some deer...maybe next season? I live in TN. I have armadillos demolishing my garden beds searching for earthworms and frogs every night. It is breaking my heart. I'm going to attempt to enclose my growing area (which is rather large) in 2ft chicken wire held in place with rebar. When I have the energy and it cools off some. I like the names you've given many of you growing areas. "The Way Back" is an adventure.
@@heatherfoley4945 I like that idea about the dill. I might still try it this season. Thank you! Sorry about your armadillos. I’m working on fencing too.
So excruciating hot fot the plants 🪴
I'm sorry your heat is so devastating to your garden. Do you know the name of the tall Rudbeckia from the 20s and 30s?
@@jeanneclark99 We think it’s Rudbeckia laciniata hortensia or cutleaf coneflower.
Muito lindo 😊❤❤❤
My current garden nemesis are the armadillos! Curse Them! Me hates Them! I grew potatoes in totes one year and they seemed to do well, I'd like to again. Sorry there's not more to show for your effort. I'm not a fan of grow bags but some people have luck with them. And your flowers are lovely! That coreopsis is such a great color. =)
I like the burgundy coreopsis; I've not seen that before. Nice comments on growing food in one's particular microclimate. I'm sorry your potato crop is so small this year; my dad grew potatoes above-ground under straw one year and had a good crop--easy to harvest, too (just lift up the straw).
Love your garden
@@Raquel-x9l Thank you.
Great garden! Can you share where the stackable garden was purchased? I've never seen that style and it's more pleasing to the eye.
@@sharonbarnhill1714 It is called a Grow Tower. I personally find it too shallow to grow most things. If I had it to do over, I'd get a Green Stalk instead which has deeper trays. I won the Grow Tower so can't help you there - it was over 9 years ago. The Grow Tower center is suppose to be a worm bin full of food scraps. It needs a special support and casters to make it mobile. I live on a hill and do not find vertical planters very useful. They tip over way too easily. I'm going to try my fennel, it's bronze fennel, on pizza... that sounds yummy! What a fun garden you've created! It's packed to the brim. I'm going to order some skirrit seed to try in a big pot. Glad I came across your channel. I garden rurally in TN and am so grateful I don't have deer issues. It surprises me. Knock on wood! Bugs, we have endless bugs. =)
Yes, we also have endless bugs. Good luck with the skirret!
might just be the color of the squares. think bunnies might be color blind.. " but they can see the white grid and where the hole is don't know what paint your have but i'd paint them grey or black if it spray paint put cardboard inside and then spray grid. there's this thing about black, if you paint a door way black some one with alzheimer's cannot go through that door it gives them vertigo. It might be the same with bunnies without the white they do not see the window to go through.
Thanks.

We had a break in the heat today, thank goodness! I actually got outside and weeded without feeling like the life was being steamed out of me. Hope you get the same!
Storms came through and watered for me. I planted red clover as a cover crop for the rabbit just before it rained. I have hopes that it'll go after that rather than my beans.
Thanks nice garden
Weird that the storm is coming from the east. Good luck on keeping power!
It rained 4 blocks away in the valley but not here. No loss of power unlike Pittsburgh.
An Amazon truck?!? Poor carrots. Man, those deer are tenacious. The heat dome really got to us yesterday. 🥵
Yes, I saw that the heat dome is also hitting Indiana. We had a thunderstorm to cool things down last night but have 4 more days of this. My guess is there are at least 3 herds in the area.
Lots of plants and fruits
"This weather is very, very screwy." So true! We have things blooming together that never have before, too. The stuff under the poison ivy is nasty, too; it creates the fuzzy seeds that stick to everything. Good luck harvesting under the noses of all the critters!
Your booth looks great. Wish I could have gone!
