Mission four shows the final tasking for the phase 1 air campaign. Now it wouldn't be a good end to a phase if it wasn't dicey. We are a 4-ship tasked with DEAD on an SA-10 / S300 Site with...2 mavericks. This was probably my most fun mission so far in this campaign as being tasked with DEAD on an S300 Site in black out conditions flying nap of the earth all the while trying to get mavs on targ...

Single most dangerous mission of the campaign....
YES!
Thank you for these series Carbon, you really aced the campaign. If anyone complains after release I’ll just link your videos saying ‘this is how it’s done!’ Also thank you for all the testing, the voice overs and the valuable insights and feedback, helping me to get things right. I really appreciate it.
Thank you, I appreciate it and it was a wonderful journey.
Carbon: "I wonder what kind of shenanigans Reflected is gonna pull in this mission." Reflected: *Evil laughter*
Hahah Everytime!
I’m going to have to figure out the shortcut to not having to work with the chief on star up; because I don’t have 25 minutes to start up a plane
I forgive you 😄
The shortcut is in the campaign documentation ;)
I don't think anyone has ever been that close to an SA-15 missile and live to tell the tale!! :o
They were so close!
It’s over! The world didn’t end in a nuclear holocaust. The Russian president disappeared, and their forces are standing down, withdrawing even from Ukraine. There must have been a window somewhere in Moscow that was left open... Yesterday we had the party of our lives. All the Finnish pilots were brought back to Rovaniemi, although they had to take a bus, there is no place for their Hornets until we get out of here. Vodka was downed in copious amounts, and we were all on the verge of alcohol poisoning. In exchange for the drinks we taught them how to play crud, and we played it the hard way. Physical contact was not only allowed, but encouraged. Not sure how we all got away without any broken ribs or fingers. We had the morning off and slept until 11 - except for Pecker and Kanget who were standing alert from 6AM. I wasn’t gonna pretend to feel sorry for them. They missed a helluva celebration though. Today we were going home, rumor had it. Although the sun was pretty low, most pilots wore sunglasses to mask their blood shot eyes, and filter out any light to alleviate their headache. Good afternoon...or shall I say good morning? - Sparky smiled as he slowly scanned through the room, looking each of us in the eye. - I’ve got to say I’m mighty proud of each and every one of you. All our hard training paid off: the Stingers were thrown into deep water, and you didn’t only swim but won the race. Coalition forces destroyed 142 enemy aircraft, 75 helicopters, 14 ships, and hundreds of tanks and other vehicles within less than a week. That’s a helluva lot of damage. Russia invaded Ukraine exactly two years ago, and now they’re withdrawing. Their president vanished into thin air, and the entire political structure of the country is about to change drastically. Hell, maybe a year from now they’ll be our strongest allies? Anyhow, I’ll leave that up to the big wigs in Congress and the Kremlin. As for us, it’s time to go home. Well, not home CONUS, but we’re heading back to Lakenheath and await further orders there. But before we do that, we’re going to participate in a grand send off, a flyover. Did you know Santa Claus lives just a mile south of the base? Oh, that explains that big red nose, Roach! Fuck you Pecker! Alright, that’s enough! All the kids from Rovaniemi and the surrounding villages will gather there to see us off, and we’re gonna give them a Christmas tree. The loudest and most expensive Christmas tree the world has ever seen, made of 20 American made fighter jets. We step to the planes at 1645, engine start at 1715, check in at 1730. We’re gonna follow the Marxo 1A departure, but will remain at 3000 feet MSL, and rejoin at Marxo in a wide left hand orbit. The Finnish Hornets will form the tip and the top branches of the Christmas tree, followed by the F-15Es of the 494th. The lowest branch of the tree will be 5 Stingers in a V formation with me at the tip, and then the trunk of the tree will be 2 Vipers in close trail formation, led by Utah. When the time comes the formation proceeds to the IP descending to 1500 feet MSL, maintaining 330 knots, then turns inbound. We are to overfly the village at 1800LT sharp. Then we maintain our heading that will take us right over the soccer stadium of Rovaniemi, where the Mayor is holding a big victory celebration. After that the Stingers and the Panthers detach, and the Hornets can finally reclaim their home base and take a hot shower. We’ll head straight to the Blue tanker track to refuel, then proceed west following the same route we came in. 17 will drop back and 15 to 17 will drop back a mile in trail as Sting 2. Any questions? Great. The ground crew is attaching your travel pods as we speak. Make sure you pack everything, put all your shit in the travel pods, don’t clutter your cockpits with loose gear, understood? Alright kids, let’s go home.
i like it .
Loving these. Any reason why the campaign designer didn't put the voice overs to transmit over radio? I mean when Utah speaks it doesn't show the respective radio tx on the DED.
I'm not sure why exactly, that's a fair question. I can bring it up.
They're all radio transmissions. But they're all coming from the same unit, never the player's. It's the only way to do it due to DCS limitations.
I only ask, because I believe it was in the FIWOS campaign where it was pulled off somehow. Great work as always though, Reflected. Can't wait to play this campaign myself. So far I'm half way done with your other works.
@@macdirty869 I originally pulled it off in Fear the Bones. Then the campaign broke, and after talking to ED and also Baltic Dragon, they showed me the bug-proof way of doing it: all transmissions should be coming from the same unit. So I rebuilt that campaign and been heeding their advice ever since. If the player's aircraft transmits anything, everything else will be blocked, not until the sound file is over, but until the subtitle is on screen. (even now you can hear the squelch sound is tied to the subs, not the sound file length).
Makes total sense. Thanks for your contribution. Keep it up!
when does this come out
Should be when the patch hits....anytime now
Been a long time since i could watch a video. Love that you share great content and it pops up in our discord. Big fan
I'm glad you can watch again and thanks for linking the channel to discord !
So you're a Stinger, 180 TFW,
Correct!
Nice vid. Keep it up. Word of advice... pronounce words like coup de grace properly. Just saying.
You're absolutely right, that's my uncultured crew chief coming out. Thanks for the comment.
Don't forget to go ahead before you do anything.
What?
As soon as 2 talked about going home to see his daughter i knew how this would end.... man dont give murphy a wedgie!
Sad times
Very nice. Appreciate the preview!
Thanks for watching
Great video again! Can't wait for the next episode
Thanks! Soon!
Can someone explain how the Authentication works with the kneeboard table?
I believe I touch upon it in mission 2 with the jtac
The BIT fail at the beginning was a nice curveball to throw in. I was a RQ-7 "Shadow" UAV operator, and we've had to swap aircraft in the middle of preflight due to BIT fails of various systems.
Yeah my only critique on it was that it happens way too late in the launch. But it's due to players probably not on the right comm at the time it would normally happen and for a sim that's fine reasoning.
@Carbon_715 Fair enough, but I agree. IRL, I would've reported it early on and another crew chief would be rolling out the backup aircraft asap.
Very cool. Out of curosity. Does the viper have a button to transmit on guard? In the end with the patriot. I didn't see you switch to guard. Would that be possible irl or is that just sim-ism? Keep it up
That was a scripted event however you would place the comm 1 select knob by the backup radio to GD. This would allow you to xmit on guard through comm 1
That's a great observation by the way
This was awesome and I can't wait for it to release. As a former F-16 avionics guy, I can appreciate the ground procedures and comms. Thanks for the video Carbon!
Thanks for watching!
Yesterday we flew our most intense mission so far. Taking out that SA-10 was no joke. We got back to base drenched in sweat, and our flight suits froze solid as we walked back to our lockers. I’ve seen the elephant before, dodging SAMs in Syria, but this is different somehow. This is the mighty Russian bear. The action took a toll on Dawg, I noticed his hands were shaking all evening and he was a lot more quiet than usual. I told him to go see the flight surgeon. I’m not sure what happened after that, as I hit the sack pretty early, at 8PM. It felt like I’d only slept 5 minutes when the orderly flipped on the lights. What the…?! I looked at my watch: 0200. You’ve got to be shitting me, what is it this time?! I didn’t have to dress up as I fell asleep wearing my flight suit and boots, so I slowly made my way to the briefing room where I was greeted by Sparky and Scooter. “Good morning sunshine†- she greeted me. Sparky added: “We have some business for you down south, something big is going down. Let’s wait for Pecker and Kanget and I’ll tell you all about it†He had no sooner finished his sentence than the 2 missing pilots entered the room. Alright kids, you’ve done a terrific job so far. We took out most of the eyes of the Bear, and yesterday we destroyed one of the most important cornerstones of their IADS as well as their airbase at Olenegorsk. It’s not looking great for the Russkies. That is why they’ve begun another push, we think it’s a last ditch effort. Armored divisions crossed the border at Suoperya and pushed west on road 866. We believe their objective is to capture the town of Kuusamo and its airfield. Their air support, however, is not what it was a few days ago, and they were halted by the Finnish at the junction at Sankikangas. We have a whole lot of Russian vehicles lined up on a single road between that junction and the border with nowhere to go. Do you see where I’m getting here? The sleepiness was gone from everyone’s eyes and we all smiled as it all fell into place. We’re sending up 4 Vipers, callsign Muddy 5. Utah, Pecker, Scooter and Kanget. Start engines at 0450, pass the mickey at 0505, check in on Uniform and Victor 1 at 0510. You take the Marxo 1A departure, then proceed to the border and marshal at point Nazareth in a racetrack pattern. We have a Reaper on station over the convoy, and if things are looking good, Chainsaw will give you the signal to push ‘Cough Drops’ at 0540. 3 and 4 will detach and proceed to the target, while 1 and 2 keep anchoring at Nazareth. The second element will be carrying 2 2000 lbs JDAMs, and their objective is to cut off the road, right about…here, so the Russkies won’t be able to retreat. When the trap is sprung, they’ll give you the signal ‘Rosewood’. That’s your cue, when 1 and 2 can push, carrying 4 dumb CBUs each. Their primary target is the rear of the convoy, near the DMPI of the JDAMs, to avoid any blue on blue near the junction. When you’re winchester, push to Pittsburgh and rejoin at 15k. So far we haven’t detected any SHORAD, but we’re quite sure they didn’t leave home without any defenses. If you have nothing on RHAW, you can go down and strafe the bastards, just be careful, and keep good mutual support and lookout. 4 Swedish Gripens will provide BARCAP to the north, to cut off any Flankers from Severomorsk. As we speak, Finnish Hornets are getting ready to strike the front end of the column after you kids are done. If all goes according to plan, this is our golden ticket to destroy their remaining forces in the area. After you took out those bridges 2 days ago, intel reports Russian supplies coming in from the south dropped by about 70%. Time is of the essence, we’ve got to hit them hard before those supply lines are restored. Understood? We nodded and made our way to the locker room. Adrenaline started flowing and I felt like a fighter pilot again as we got into the Land Rover and set off for the flight line.
This might be the highest quality dcs video I’ve seen from top to bottom
Thank you!
I was an Avionics guys for F-16s at Hill (4th) and the 18th Aggressors. Can't wait for this campaign. Thanks for the video dude.
That's awesome, hopefully not much longer until release
Make one in how aoa helps on dogfights
I wouldn't be the right person for that, I'm pretty bad BFM
Question : you mentioned this was tying in with Reflected's Arctic Thunder cold start vid... before the EPU pin is pulled is it... EPU NORM (Guard DOWN) or EPU OFF (Guard UP). The 2 procedures are slightly different - he's got the run up first to ~85% then EPU to NORM and test. Does it make any difference from a RL safety standpoint ? Totally awesome work to see this brings so much more depth - well done indeed
Off until pin is removed is the important part. Either norm at idle or 80%, it doesn't matter
I can't wait to get my hands on this. I'm getting a little jealous of Carbon, to be honest.
At least your not having Access to test and are not able to due to being so busy ! 😂 Hopefully can do mission 6 this week.
Another great mission, cannot wait till mission 6!
Hopefully soon!
I absolutely love this realistic type of content! From start-up to authentication. You are also doing a great job flying the mission. This mission greatly shows that it's quite easy for a IRL pilot to go "tumbleweed" or atleast miss some stuff in the cockpit (I guess thats what checklists are for ;)). It also shows that the virtual squadron I am with is using the right procedures. Keep it up, I look forward to the rest of this series. Planning to do any other campaigns for the viper?
And ofcourse you earned yourself a sub. Thanks to @bogeydope for showing your channel. Maybe a collab with the two crew chiefs of DCS would be amazing in a realistic type mission.
Thank you for the sub, however I'm not a RL pilot, I turn wrenches on them. Concurrently doing the Red flag campaign by Bunyip when I can. As for a collab, @BogeyDope and I have flown a few community Red Flag missions before in a flight, need some more though for sure!
Also plan to do Weasels of Syria and Gamblers campaigns!
@@Carbon_715 already next in the playlist for me are your red flag missions from bunyap, can't wait to check those out either.
I just subscribed to your channel. Enjoyed even if a bit late to the show, lol
Thanks for subbing, never too late!
Great video!!! Do you have a checklist I can download? I'm going to have to prep for Reflected's upcoming campaign!
No, I don't. Just in my head. Reflecteds campaign does a pretty good job walking you through the start sequence.
Carbon, can you direct me to some material where i can learn the tactics needed to fly these campaigns? I have spent over a year now learning the F16. I have read the DCS manual and an official Airforce manual. Im not yet where i would like to be, but im not half bad. But when it comes to campaigns, especially the new ones ( i.e., the gamblers), it's quickly apparent i dont know the procedures or tactics needed to fly these missions. I have been looking but can't find this information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know of anything specific out there really. Tactics I pray isn't floating around out there, that wouldn't be good. As for procedures, that's a bit vague but should be out there in a -1 manual. But what really helped me, was dedicating time to join either a full on milsim group or milsim lite group to really come to grips with things. They usually have the material, it only requires your time and dedication at that point. Unfortunately, I haven't much of the former nowadays so I'm out of touch with some groups. Feel free to comment anything specific and I'll try to help.
@Carbon_715 Thanks for the info. This question might sound stupid, but I'm a 53 year old dude who has never played video games until I found DCS. How do I find and join these groups?
Sorry for taking so long to get back but there's a few places. You will want to get the discord app though as 99% of DCS players use that. Then you can join the DCS official discord, or Hoggit. You can use Reddit #wingmanfinder, the DCS website forums, and even Facebook DCS pages to find some really good groups.

Where does one get those sound files btw? :)
They arrived only a few days after us, but we welcomed the boys of the 494th like war weary veterans welcome FNGs. We shared war stories at the mess hall, told tall tales of burning tanks and exploding Flankers. It may as well have been a year since we left Lakenheath. Today they’ll see the elephant for themselves. Sparky and Hi-Ho spent the morning with the CO of the Panthers and the Finnish Hornet squadron pointing at maps and looking through piles of intelligence reports. Briefing was finally scheduled for 0930, and we all got there early. We could feel something big was going down, and we were eager to learn more about the plan. I just wish we hadn’t opened that Finnish Vodka yesterday. Roach was right. Good morning kids - Sparky began. Today we’re flying a large-scale, coordinated strike mission with coalition forces. He stopped for a second to let the noise in the room die down. The Russians are on the defensive. We took out most of their long range EWR radars yesterday, so they’re half blind. Today we’re going to strike hard, and strike where it’s really gonna hurt them. The main target is the airbase at Olenegorsk, where several Foxbat units are operating from. The base is heavily defended, with hundreds of gun emplacements, several radar guided KS-19 sites, and of course the Foxhounds, but the main threat is an SA-10 site 5 miles to the northwest. This is where we come into the picture. We’re going to do some weaseling. I’ll lead Weasel 7 flight with Kanget on my wing. We’re going to be the hunters, carrying HARMs. Utah and Dawg will be the killers, armed with a D Mav and a CBU each. Step time is 1120 local, engine start at 1150. I’ll pass the mickey at 1205, then we’ll check in at 1210 on uniform 1, then victor 1. We take off at 1220, follow the ROTKO 3A departure, then proceed straight to the Orange track to refuel. I’ll contact Texaco on Amber 1, then we follow standard procedures to refuel. 1 and 2 rejoins on the tanker’s left, while 3 and 4 moves to the right side. I’ll be first, then proceed to the outside left of the formation. Then 3 plugs, and he proceeds to the outside right. 2 follows from the left, and finally number 4, with everyone finishing at the same position we started from. Once we’re done we break off and proceed to the Marshal point at our assigned blocks of 22-23,000 feet. A salvo of Tomahawks is going to be launched from a cruiser in the Gulf of Bothnia, and hit Olenegorsk at exactly 1300h. This will hopefully render the base inop, and prevent any fighters from taking off. As soon as the Tomahawks hit, Chainsaw gives the go signal and the SEAD package pushes east from Blue Ridge. The codeword is SHOTGUN. We will have Toxic 51, an EC-130H Jammer right behind us. 60 miles from the target we split up and go music on. The hunters turn south, and the killers turn north to their respective IPs. We’ll remain above 22k, Utah, Dawg, you guys drop down to treetop level and use the terrain to mask your ingress. We want the SA-10 to be looking at the hunters, got it? Dawg swallowed hard then nodded. Also, do NOT fly straight to your IP, make sure you arc around the MEZ, keep a distance of at least 30 miles from the SAM site. Don’t go too far either, or you’ll end up over Murmansk, right at the hornet’s nest. Maintain 480 knots to get the timings right. As soon as 3 reports reaching the IP, DEVIL 1, 2 Finnish Hornets will release their TALDs, then flex into OCA, while 1 and 2 will start shooting HARMs to keep the SAM busy. The killers approach through the valleys, pop up at 12 miles, and use their Mavericks to take out the Flap Lid Tracking Radar. We have no idea about the SHORADs near the base, but Rivet Joint detected an SA-6 and an SA-8 in the vicinity in the past 24 hours. Pop, rifle, then break off to the west and get behind those ridges before they realize you’re there, understood? Understood Sir. Alright, when the Flap Lid is down, you turn back for a second attack, using your CBUs to destroy the site. Strafing runs are not recommended, always assume they have manpads. At 1310 the strikers will push: 4 F-15Es from the 494th, to clean up what’s left of the airbase. Their callsign is Badger 3. The Weasels are to remain in the area and suppress any threat while Badger is working the target. If you’re winchester, just make the AAA shoot at you instead of the Strike Eagles, let them concentrate on their target, alright? Once all strikers have egressed, we flow west and rejoin at ROANOKE at 20,000. Alright, that’s it. Any questions? Good. Take some time to study the map, the target photos and the timings. The utmost precision is required in order for this to work. If we don’t take out that SA-10, the Eagles won’t be able to take out the airbase, and those Foxhounds will prevent coalition aircraft from going any deeper and striking the Murmansk naval base. I’m counting on each and every one of you. Good luck, and Godspeed. MISSION NOTES FROM REFLECTED: - You will need to refuel during the mission, unless you have 'unlimited fuel' enabled. Then you can go through the procedure without plugging. - Your 4 ship will refuel using USAF procedures. The AI may fly a bit erratically when changing positions, so be ready to give them space. - After detaching, follow your route and speeds as briefed. This is a complex, coordinated attack, precision and timing is important. - Conserve your fuel, remember, weasels are always first in, last out.
Even tho the F16 is my main DCS jet. I feel I'm still far from proficiency enough to do campaigns like this. I can put warheads to foreheads(mosty) but those procedures, and tacan etc. Never manage to remember those.
I'm in a very similar place as you. I bought the gamblers campaign and was completely lost 10 min in on mission 1. There is a lot to learn. And I'm having trouble finding the material.
The footsteps of the crew chief is bit over done
Absolutely, any crew chief movement sound is over done but it serves a purpose knowing a script hasn't hung or to that something is gong on as you are sitting there waiting. I can see both sides however it's creators intent which personally I'm fine with. It's a good in between until ED ever models this stuff....which is a big ask and I don't see it ever happening unfortunately as it doesn't make them money.
great video
Glad you enjoyed it
When will the campaign come out ? I want it
I'm not sure, hopefully not too long!
How are you maintaing 1 mile visual separation? Does the lead have lights on that I can't see? Great video!
So when I lock lead with radar I can see their airspeed kCAS. You just generally match that same speed, however there is an issue where wind affects it, so it cannot be reliable all the time. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
@@Carbon_715 Thank you Sir.
@@Carbon_715 locking them with radar wouldn't give them a buddyspike? Great videos by the way i subscribed!
Yes it would in RWS....but I use TWS for soft lock so their rwr wouldn't be going crazy
@@Carbon_715 thank you Sir!
Cool good job!
Thanks!
We’ve only been here 2 days, and most of us have air to air kills - some of us more than one. 5 days ago we were fat dumb and happy in the UK playing war, turning jet fuel into g-s and generally having a good time. If anyone had told me that in less than a week we’ll be killing tanks and shooting down Flankers, I’d have told them they’re full of shit. These were the thoughts going through my mind as I found my way to the briefing room in the pitch black. Let’s see how far 4 hours of sleep will get me today. Scooter, Sparky, Hi-Ho and Kanget were already in the room as I opened the door. Oh hey Utah, glad you decided to join us, I’ve got something for you - said Sparky. This bottle of Koskenkorva vodka was sent down from the Finnish road base up north. It’s from that pilot that got shot down yesterday, and you guys covered the rescue ops. Looks like he’s mighty happy that he didn’t have to spend the night in a Russian interrogation cell. By the way, the flight surgeon let Dawg out of sick bay 3 hours ago, apparently he got away without a scratch, he’s fit to fly. 704 needs a few new wing panels and a TGP, the chief says she’ll be ready to fly tomorrow. Alright, let’s begin, shall we? Intel reports that the enemy advance was pushed back to the border late last night. This war has only lasted 4 days, and the Russians have already lost 47 jets, 31 Helicopters and hundreds of tanks and other vehicles. We’ve won the first battle, and now we’ve got to win the war while they’re licking their wounds and preparing for their next move. We’re taking the fight to the enemy. In this first stage of the battle, our aim is to take out their air defenses. We’ll begin with their EWR sites to blind them, then we go for their IADS, and when they’re defenseless, we’ll take out their airbases. As we speak, Finnish and Norwegian aircraft are already attacking their known EWR radars. The Stingers were tasked to destroy the one at Kovdor and Kirovsk. Scooter and Utah. Your callsign today is Hale 3 and you’ll take out the radar at Kovdor at 0830 precisely. Hi-Ho and Kanget will follow you as Jedi 8 to destroy the other one at 0930. Your jets will carry 2 2000lbs JDAMS each. Your first designated mean point of impact is the radar vehicle, the second DMPI is the generator. 2 bombs in quick succession. The Kovdor radar is on a hilltop 2 miles west of the town overlooking the quarry. Impossible to miss. The town is defended by light AAA, you can expect ZU-23s and some S-60 batteries. You’ll ingress at an altitude of 15000 feet so you should be pretty safe from the smaller stuff. Intel reports the Russians moved their SHORAD further south to defend their ground forces, but keep an eye on your radar warning receivers, OK? Enemy air activity should be light, the Russians don’t like to fly at night it seems, and you’ll still have some cover of darkness during the attack. Monitor Chainsaw frequency as well as guard at all times, they will let you know about any popup threats. It should be a milk run, but remember, you’ll be operating over enemy airspace. Empty your pockets, make sure you don’t carry any personal belongings. If you get shot down, evade capture at all cost. People who oppose Putin are disappearing, or falling out of windows. God knows what they would do to someone who just stuck a JDAM up their asses. Oh, I almost forgot the good news: the 494th FS is scheduled to arrive in Rovaniemi later this morning, so you’ll see your new friends from Lakenheath very soon. Alright, let’s get the ball rolling. Dismissed
I see on your knee boards that you have color tabs. How do you use the Shortcuts?
When you initially bring up a kneeboard, there is an option to pin it. The colored tabs are the pins or "favorites"
@@Carbon_715 thanks. I’m kinda new to DCS. How do you pin different chapters in kneeboards? Thanks.
No worries in the lower left corner of the kneeboard it should say pin above the left and right arrows.
Looks good 👍
It is!
Yours are serious, well made and very useful videos. I only regret having found your channel only recently.
Thank you
It makes sense. I have to change my habits.
Earlier this year they sighting logic changed, I don't think it changes anything shown though except that WPN page SOIs automatically now after TGP Tms Up
I like the campaign very much 😊 Only the hand signals are not my cup of tea 😉 I understand the idea behind it and I really appreciate Reflected‘s approach, but there is something I don‘t like about it. But everything else is fantastic 👍🏻 Thx Carbon for the video 😃✌🏻
It's different for sure. Doesn't bother me though.
@@Carbon_715 The hand signals definitely won‘t stop me from buying the campaign 😊
Good to hear!
I'm liking everything about this...apart from the hand signals. I know its an attempt for more immersion, but it just removes it even more for me.
enjoyed this shorter format
