I imagine this tool can be used in a hundred different ways, but for writers, is it recommended that boards equate to chapters in a book? Blocks become divisions in the chapter, and maybe docs comprise the various scenes within the chapter? There is probably no end to the variation, but I'm wondering how someone drafting a book might use Scrintal.
Audio is only on right channel :( reupload?
I'm new here. Is it possible to send links programmatically to a board? I copy hundreds of Instagram links per month lol
Unfortunately not yet. It seems there are different import/export options in their roadmap but I don't have much information about that yet
Can we share board with a pay wall?
You can share a board via a publishing link but there is no paywall embedded. If you want you can do the same people would do with Notion Templates in the past. Create your paywall and only give the board link after the paywall. The problem is that (like Notion) people may end up redistributing that link.
This looks very much like Apples FreeForm. Or am I missing something. Looks very interesting though.
I never used Apple FreeForm so I wouldn't know for sure.
This new version looks great, but the lack of a mobile app (and they're not planning to have it anytime soon) makes it too difficult to use as the main PKM app.
I understand as I also use mobile quite a bit. I used to use the browser on mobile with version 1 but haven't tried the playground yet. In any case the screen of the phone is too small to properly work with boards. I suppose that a mobile version would be focused on quick capture, search, and etc. Not sure how the visual part of it could work 🤔 Any thoughts?
@@BiaResearcher Yeah, I get what you said regarding checking the board on the phone, but it's still important to be able to access cards. Heptabase did quite a good job with their mobile app where you can access cards but also boards. You can also capture information directly from the iOS sharesheet for example. While Scrintal looks appealing the fact they're really not planning to launch a mobile app (read a few comments from them about that topic) will be difficult for user adoption.
@@BiaResearcher Heptabase has mobile apps with editable boards, I believe
@@BiaResearcheripad
@@BiaResearcher Firs, thanks for the video. Loved to know the new features and the really made me want to check it out again. Regarding the mobile, I agree that the main focus could be for quick capture, access information of pages, blocks on the go. But even the visual board, it's possible to provide good enough experience to justify the necessity of it, just check Heptabase, Obsidian, Miro, Mural, MindNode, MindMeister...they all provide great experience on the visual board ✨
The new stacks feature will certainly help when it comes to planning uni assignments, for when you want to move blocks between different sections to see what flows better!
That's a perfect use case for it 😊
@@BiaResearcher 🙂
Thanks for the explanation of this new tool. There seem to be so many tools coming out it's hard to keep track of all of them. Just curious, the PKM mindsets book that you were showing on-screen, is that a real book or is that just something made to use as an example for the video?
The PKM Mindsets are real, 30 and counting 😊 I teach them in my courses and mentorship programme but I don't have a book yet.
I have a workflow you might consider the reverse of yours. I creating a large number of small notes that tend to coalesce around a topic as I link them. Then I use the graph view to see those relationships and identify the orphans and outliers. I think the difference is seeing the relationships that grow instead of creating them visually first.
I have that workflow as well 😊
It looks a little like HEPTABASE but maybe better (?)
They are in the same niche but the experience in using them is different.
Your videos are very good. Do they planning for including TABLES soon? Like notion
Thank you 😊 I am not sure. By tables you mean visual tables or databases?
@BiaResearcher database table where we can sort and filter etc.
Thank you Bianca for the preview. Looking forward to tomorrow 🫣
You are welcome 😊
While Obsidian has everything I want in a notetaking app, it doesn't do whiteboarding particularly well in my experience. It's very clunky to use with adding new files and editing existing cards. Apps like Scrintal are very good for people who prefer visual notetaking.
Yes. I would expect Obsidian would have at least some plug-ins improving the Canvas by now. Perhaps it is not a priority?
@@BiaResearcher It seems that most people who use obsidian prefer note-based link navigation from note to note. I like being able to see all my notes in one spot, and often get lost if I can't get a bird's eye view. If Scrintal had a mobile app for recording fleeting notes and such it would be perfect, but for now I just use other apps for that.
Great job! As usual. 👍
Thank you for the kind words 😊
These are some really cool features. Thanks for educating us.❤

Nice video @Bianca - Scrintal is so powerful - we just need to get the word out and people need to be able to try it for themselves!
Yes, the potential is incredible 😊
That's why I moved back to Evernote. It sounds absurd these days, I know. But it is simply for capturing ideas and organizing them. No overcomplication. I used nearly every note-taking app out there in the last two year, but as someone wrote here I too believe app hopping is destructive. You build your "own system" in the hopes of minimizing friction, but get lost in the set of features the apps offer. Nowadays I use a simple Inbox-Notebook for fast ideas and organize it later when I've got the time. I need the option to quickly make a note without thinking about tags or loosing them in a network. It might work for many people, but for me it created too much chaos in my head. Minimal friction for me is just a button to quickly take a note or capture something. Minimal folder structure (in the forms of notebooks), and a strong search function. Great video on that topic!
Evernote is still the best app for capturing sources and also quick for capturing ideas so I don't think that is absurd 😊 If all you want is simplicity then it works well. The unique problem, in my opinion, is when we start to have too many notes and want to make sense of them all. In that case, having a visual board where you can spread ideas around and connect them really helps. Do you know if Evernote already allows exporting notes in Markdown?
I could never figure out how to make Obsidian work for me. It's too open, too many options. The more I learn about Scrintal, the more willing I am to pay for a subscription. It looks simple enough to use, yet packed with invaluable, useful options.
Scrintal has a new version coming up in a few days: ruclips.net/video/Q2WhJtCn5eY/видео.htmlsi=II3geKFVt5s8PbPz
hover editor will do the job even better than scrintal
One of my clients uses Obsidian with the Hover editor but it is not as powerful when it comes to making sense of things using the Canvas.
Very helpful video. I heard Scrintal gets laggy and slow when you have lots of notes / cards / content. Do you have any issues with that?
I used to have that issue but then it got fixed as they improved the platform a few months ago.
Your video illustrates the shortfalls of Obsidian, for now. Perhaps in the future, plugins may be developed that augment the Canvas utility. Scrintal is an interesting tool and I am definitely considering it. I do a great deal of research for novels. I am never sure what I will use or how it relates to other information when I do. Your presentation shows how it can be done. So thank you. Also...I love your accent.
Thanks 🥰 I am usually too self-conscious about my accent and pronounciation, so your comment warms my heart. For developing plots you may want to check the new version of Scrintal they will be releasing the next days: ruclips.net/video/Q2WhJtCn5eY/видео.htmlsi=II3geKFVt5s8PbPz
it is interesting and all but felt boring to watch
Thanks for the feedback. It is always challenging to create interesting videos 😊
Very helpful. Thank you.
I am glad it helped
I am new to obsidian but I think you can use the core plugin “Page preview” and the community plugin “Hover editor”
Yes, Hover Editor is what I use for this instance, really helpful.
Nice! Another helpful feature of Scrintal.
Excellent point. This is a nice feature of Scrintal.
It is on-line not off-line?
@zbyszeks3657 It is currently on-line only. You can use it offline if you are logged into the app but if it logs off then you need internet. Their main use case is synch between devices and collaboration by teams, so I guess that's why they took this route.
Very interesting method. I'll definitely try it. I realized that when I'm studying, when I read something and link it to a real life situation, I can remember the concept much better. On a side note, are you Brazilian? Thanks for the video!
Yes, when we link something "new" to something "known", it is easier to remember it it. And yes, I am Brazilian 😊
I've used Scrintal for a while, but Affine is open source, free and has canvas with notes. It has shapes, arrows and pen, anything to customize the canvas in any way you want.
Hello Bianca, thanks for this video, it can help a lot to analyze own needs and ways of thinking, before going crazy and constantly looking for the “best” app ever… I believe that, for me, the visual approach is the one to follow in my note taking process. Can I ask if you know the MILANOTE app and what you think about it? Also, I’m very interested in Scrintal for visualizing thinking/notes. Do you think Scrintal have the instruments to realize a “graphical” visual way of note taking? Especially with drawing tools? Milanote has many features to do that, but seems to lack the “connection” part that Scrintal has. In other words I would need an integration of the two above apps; because you know Scrintal deeply, do you guess some of its functions can allow me a similar approach like Milanote? Many tanks for your answer, and greetings from Italy! 😊
I have heard about Milanote but have never tried it so I can't say much. The way I see is that Milanote is for visual note-taking (you call it "graphical") whereas Scrintal is for the visual organisation of notes or how to make sense of information by arranging content blocks in space. They have added "arrows and lines" in the version they are releasing soon, but no support for visual note-taking yet. I am not sure if that is part of their goal to be honest.
@@BiaResearcher @BiaResearcher Thanks a lot for your answer and comment. Just the addition of arrows and lines could be tools that help a little my way of note taking. In my opinion, future possible "visual" little tools in Scrintal would not change its "original soul" ... In the meantime I'm looking forward the new update...
Scrintal looks interesting, but its paid-only.
Yes. You can get a free trial if invited by a current customer. I am not sure if they are releasing a public free trial after the official launch though.
Thank you. You have given me good things to think about. I am going to make my list!
That's wonderful! I hope you enjoy the process as it is a process of learning about ourselves as well 😊
Have you tried Heptabase?
Yes, I tried it. Anything in particular you want to point out (or ask)?
That is a perfect description: Friction. I find friction in almost all the applications that offer "linking your thinking" solutions. I spend more time maintaining them than using them. For about 3 years I have used Obsidian. It is essentially a "note dump." I keep a Moleskine 3.5x5.5 and write notes that I eventually transfer to Obsidian. I try to relate them, but that is so tedious I just do the minimum. (But I keep those little notebooks all in a drawer.) P.S. Ms Pereira..I love your accent.
Sometimes the friction comes from the app, sometimes it comes from the methods we are using. One example I like to give is to "organise notes". Organisation of notes can be super tedious or become a form of active procrastination. I used to become frustrated when organising my notes, that's why I changed it to "organising my ideas" (and that's where linking enters for me). Linking becomes a form of making sense of what relates to what rather than "structuring my notes" (if that makes sense 😅) I wonder if your friction with linked notes may be related to that. Also, thank you for your kind PS. It brought me tears (no kidding) 😊🙏🏻
Thanks. I liked the explanation. Most comparison videos focus on the small little features that are different between the two, but not necessarily on the workflow of each app. I was struggling to notice the difference between the two myself until I used them both for an extended period of time. Hopefully, this video will help new users to make a faster decision when choosing between the two.
Thanks for the feedback and I am glad it helped 😊 Only in my workflow alone there are other points of comparison, most in favour of Scrintal but some definitely in favour of Obsidian as well. Your comment inspired me to think about other videos I could be recording. I won't promise but I will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks a lot!
Good video!! I felt this way until I was introduced to the "Excalidraw plugin” in Obsidian. It is Like Canvas on steroids plus tax. 😊
I love the idea behind Excalidraw. I don't think it solves the problem I mentioned in the video (I may be wrong as there is sometime already since I last tested it), but it opens up the possibility for something that I would love to see as reality: linked diagrams. No other app is so close to it as the Excalidraw plugin, I believe. That's the idea where the different "shapes" in a diagram link to different notes/boards. So rather than representing everything as a graph, we can represent things as graphics. I don't know any other tool that can do that apart from the Excalidraw plug-in. (do you know any?)
@@BiaResearcher No I dont know another that does it like excalidraw. Its a game changer but I see your point most defineately. Keep the videos coming. You earned a new subscriber 🙂
oh thanks. I just hope my next videos won't disappoint 😅
Dá uma olhada no Excalibrain, que é usado junto com o Excalidraw. Acho que é essa a solução para o que vc quer!
I think there is nothing bad in switching between app. As we do in research if something does not work for us, we change our method or design. But there is a difference in mindless switching, and knowing the true reason, why particular app did not worked for us. I think if we have proper valid arguments that why particular app do not suits our requirement for particular task. What do you think about that, please share. ??
Yes, I agree. I have changed apps a few times and I don't regret it 😊 The problem, as you mentioned, is mindless switching, often with the hope that "the next app will be better" but without thinking "better for what?"
I started to use Obsidian 3 years ago. I am extremely happy with it (Kanban Task is something that I discovered recently). You are right, you can do many things with Obsidian and its community plugins. As Graph Banner, to see directly in the note, which notes are linked (if this is for you so important). As a programmer I enjoy Obsidian and its difficulties. There are just a couple of alternative to Obsidian: Zettlr (great, .md Files and open Source) or Logseq. There, where your files are not yours is not a place where I want to be.
I am glad to hear you have found an app that brings you joy. I believe that is the most important 😊 Also, you got me curious on the Graph Banner plug-in, now I need to check it out (I won't move away from Scrintal, but it can help my students who want to use Obsidian). Thanks for the pointer.
Very helpful. Thanks.
I am glad it helped 😊
I find "app hopping" a destructive behaviour, I feel it's the same type of distraction you get from randomly scrolling through social media, and at the end of the day you're tired and empty, wasted time and energy. Sure, without trying how do you know if it's useful or the "best app" for you and your learning process? But that's more an excuse than a valid pretext. The focus should be on the objectives: are you in school and trying to pass a discipline? Are you a busy worker and need to learn continuosly from different sources and means? Are you a person who creates content or papers for journals as a living? One should take the time to master well one tool, and only after really mastering the tools, should we make the decision to improve our process. As such, I'm a strong believer on the power of sticking to a tool and having a strong community to help you really master the flow, the process and the tool. And, one needs to stop once in a while and evaluate: what are my results? How do I feel? What do I need to change and where?
I agree. The app is a means to an end, and jumping from app to app without knowing what we are trying to do will just bring frustration anyway. Having said that, there is one thing we disagree on and one thing I would like to play devil's advocate about 😊 I disagree that we should master the tool (and fully implement that tool's process) before improving the process. That would be like using a hammer to fix a screw before we decide that twisting it is a better process. Some tools may throw our minds in the wrong direction to the point where our processes can't be optimised for what we want to do. So I believe, instead, that we should focus on our processes before fully focusing on a tool. Of course, to get started choose any tool, stay with it for a while, discover what you want, and then find a tool that suits your mindset and methods best. But it doesn't mean to marry the tool before thinking about the process. On the Devil's advocate side, there is one reason I find it useful to keep an eye on new apps, which is to: learn new ways of thinking. It doesn't mean to jump from app to app, but keep an eye on them. These new ways of thinking can provide a perspective on why we are finding friction in our processes, and then we can decide how to use our current app with that new way of thinking.
Really good explanation of the differences! Question about Scrintal: taking book notes as an example, say I want to be able to connect ideas from different books to each other. Will I have to create all of my book notes within the same board, or do the notes live independently from boards, and I can bring them into boards as I choose? Thought about using Obsidian to do the same thing that you do on Scrintal: Use the graph instead of a canvas. The graph shows the relationship between notes and as soon as you create a new note, it's going to appear on the graph and be connected to the first note! You can keep multiple notes open side by side to copy and paste between them. While Scrintal looks great, The reason I'll be sticking with Obsidian for the time being is that it works entirely offline. Even if I ever lose access to Obsidian, I will not lose access to my notes which are stored in plain text. And the conventions that Obsidian uses to link notes to each other and create the graph view are already used by other PKM applications. So even if the Obsidian team stops its development, there are alternatives and there are going to be successors too.
In Scrintal, the notes live independently of the boards, so you can move them in or out of boards as you wish. In fact, a note can exist outside of all boards (you can find it via the Archive, links from other notes, or the search). The general graph tends to have too much information to be useful for this use case. If I open my Scrintal graph in Obsidian I can't really see the "empty space" between connected components. The local graph wouldn't work as I wouldn't know which local graphs to have opened. We only know after seeing all cards created within that "section". Someone mentioned ExcaliBrain, but I haven't tried it so I am not sure if it would work. Maybe worth a try? I only confidently made the move to Scrintal when they added the option to export all my notes as Markdown files, so I always have my own backup. Having said that, I wouldn't try to convince you to go out of Obsidian. Each person has their own needs (and honestly, Obsidian is great!) so if that works well for you, I don't see why you would need to move 😊
@@BiaResearcher I’m always looking at alternatives, it’s not I find Obsidian perfect~ Thanks for the info! If you export your Scrintal notes in MD, and you open the folder as a vault in Obsidian, would the connections work? I.e. does Scrintal use the same way of connecting files (at least in the exports) as Obsidian and co?
Yes, the notes work and the exported links are like the ones in Obsidian. Having said that, the export function in Scrintal is not the best. In the filesystem, each file needs to have a unique name, but in Scrintal two or more cards can have the same title if you want to. So when they export, the name of the file is a code rather than the title of the card, which is not good if you want to know what is inside a note. That's something we have reported so let's see when the team will change that.
@@BiaResearcher very useful, thanks!
