Big fan of Godzilla and his fellow Toho kaiju from 1954-1975? Well, this is the spot for reviews, retrospectives and reminiscing about the first era of King of the Monsters' movies! I'll focus on things like vinyl figure reviews, toys of yesteryear, retrospects and topics related to my experiences as a fan of the big G from my early youth to now.
Showa Showcase - 2004 Bandai Movie Monster Series Gigan vinyl figure review
Straight outta Star M Hunter Nebula, comes our cybernetic bumbling psycho black chicken kaiju! A figure thats been around since 2004, but often looked over, I examine why that may be the case in this video review!

my husband still have this book i’m amazed it survived
@@MayumiC-chan9377 I got my copy a few years ago from my brother during Christmas. Its in poor shape, but I still cherish it!
@@ShowaShowcase My husband also has King Kong and 1958 The Blob book
@MayumiC-chan9377 That Blob book traumatized me as a kid. To THIS DAY I cant bring myself to watch the movies. Lol
@@ShowaShowcase Oh my god you and my husband! My husband is Afro/Japanese and he avoids those movies like the plague! I don’t have the nerve to make fun of anyone’s fears because i’m a pediatrician and i’ve seen children vividly scared of things and i have to tell parents to help them do not ridicule them. My father-in-law a Military veteran like my husband also helped him as a child when he had a fear of the dark got him a nightlight and flashlight and introduced him to smooth jazz on a little portable radio he still has from 1990. My husband met his childhood fears with a father who understood his fear. Even today my husband cringes when he sees it playing on tv and even our children hate the movies. Now King Kong my husband and father-in-law and son love 1933s version! Same with Son of Kong.
@@MayumiC-chan9377Definately dealing with fears with my daughter too. The blob is probably the most terrifying in concept; a shapless entity that will digest you on touch. It grows larger and can squeeze through the tightest cracks to get to you. Its that combo of inescapable all consuming horror that doesnt sit well with me. Lol!
Good stuff! I’ve subbed.
@@sofubisamurai Super appraciative! Thank you! And welcome!
The Playmates one is far better than the Bandai one that they released a few years back. It's really well detailed, but man....there is something about that face that just feels off to me. The snout sort of reminds me of the Beast of Hollow Mountain dino that is in that movie. I would have loved to have seen what Playmates would have done with Varan if they kept doing to the Showa monsters.
@@mgkiryuu While I dont have the 6" MMS Goro, I do have the 8" one from some years back. But your right, Playmates feels like, in terms of quality and paint what makes a good kaiju vinyl. I feel like their sculpters get one photo for each monster they work on. There is always an angle where they look good, but move that angle and you see some warped proportions. Baragon's skull, Gorosaurus' snout...I think 56' Rodan is good, but look at their catalog and almost all of their classic monsters have some sort of distortion.
This was my bible as a kid!
@@anders7775 Amen! Mine too!
Yes I remember this book in our school library. I checked it out several times when I was a kid. I have a soft cover copy of it now in my Godzilla book collection. I have had it for a very long time now,and I don't remember where I bought it. But it is one of the first Godzilla books I collected. Famous MONSTERS of filmland #114 was my other Godzilla book prize possession as a kid. I still have the very magazine I bought at the downtown Donut Shop off the magazine shelves of 1975. Two of my childhood treasures.
@@wildone008 Thats awesome! Many of us were on the same trajectory, it seems!
@ShowaShowcase I think things were so much more special when you came across stuff then. Godzilla stuff wasn't as easy available then, as it is now. So when you did see a book like this ,it was like WOW....GODZILLA!! I wasn't familiar with some of the monsters or movies featured in either book at the time. So, the world of Godzilla seemed like a fantastic place to explore. Now, today, Godzilla stuff is wonderfully all over the place. As an adult . If I see something I like . I can afford to buy it at my fingertips. His movies are still being made after all these years and getting even bigger and better. I first saw Godzilla early one Saturday morning on a show called "Sunrise Theater." I didn't know his name then because it was a showing of "Gigatis the fire monster." My older brother called him Godzilla, " When I told him about the monster movie I had seen that morning. Later on, when "Godzilla vs. the smog monster"came to a mattinee. My brother took me to see it. Godzilla been my superhero ever sents!!
@wildone008 Wow! You summed it up perfectly. My experoences were similar, and funny enough, I cant be sure what my first Godzilla film was, but "vs. The Smog Monster" is burned in my head as one of my earliest memories.
Excellent video! Yes, I used to read this book avidly. We've mentioned it several times on my show, Growing Up With Godzilla. Subscribed!
Thank you for your kind words and subscription! This book was what kept me in the interest of the franchise, as it was a constant reminder of the unique form of cinema Toho was doing! Without it, Godzilla may have been something of a "oh yeah I remember thise silly films!" memory for some!
In a discord channel, that I am in, people were joking about how the Giant Condor won the poll. Someone was really mad about it to be honest. He said that this is the reason why we have the electoral college because people just vote for the memes. Oddly enough this was on the 3rd, so it was before the elections lol. I'm pretty happy with the monster cast that they went with. I certainly want to get the bug, Gabara, and the original KG for sure.
@@mgkiryuu Wow. At this point my brain cannot link actual politics to fan votes, do the magnitudes of the outcome. Fans need to enjoy what we have, even if deemed obscure or unwanted. I have no doubt that Bandai has those other choices lined up, maybe already sculpted. For some of us, it is all we may have left!
@@ShowaShowcase agreed. Here is hoping for a giant octopus or giant sea snake for next year! :)
@@mgkiryuu since Giant Condor cotributes to the "vs. Ebirah" cast, Giant Octopus works for both KK vs G and War of the Gargantuas...hell, even the cut scene from Frankenstein vs Baragon!
Yep. I used to check that book out all the time at the school library. I eventually just used the copier and paid 10 cents per page copy and made a copy I could put in a folder and take home. The photoshop style images really made me happy as a kid. Not to mention I didn't know who Varan, or Baragon was at that time. (I saw KKE on the old Sci Fi channel and was aware of who he was).
@@mgkiryuu It never occurred to me to copy this book while in school. Decades later , I wound up with a poor condition one in the video, but I treasure it all the same!
Its so great to see videos about the showa era and all the classic monsters that bandai puts out and the only company with all those odd movie monster right on movie monster series great video
@@petergucci4024 Thanks for the compliment! I hope to have more content very soon!
we do definitely need a showa ghidorah, and ive said before that a 1956 rodan would be epic
I would love a 64' Rodan too!
for me (not top 5 bc there’s too much) -gezora -dogora -rodan 1956 -meganulon 1956 -anguirus 2004 (rolled up into a ball) -mothra 1964 (imago and larva)
@@copysquid all great picks! No argument from me!
Naturally I had zero clue about Showa vs. Heisei timelines as a kid when watching Godzilla films....
I think it became most apparent with 91's Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. For some reason my young brain refused to accept The Return of Godzilla was a total reboot
I like all the effort on the drawings honestly. Certainly made the rant feel lively lol :) But yeah, I agree, the Showa KG does need a figure. The 90's version gets all the love. I prefer the original for sure. But Grand is a close second because he has still has that crescent moon like horn design with him. If the Giant Condor, the Sea Snake, or Shockarius get a figure before KG.....I swear lol. I would like a new Meganulon though :/ Figures of the original bug are far too expensive.
I wish I could take credit for the illustrations, but for times sake I resort to using my Bitmoji app to generate appropriate expressions. I would love to illustrate my own, but time is my enemy! I wouldnt put it past Bandai to deliver Giant Condor, Octopus and Sea Snake before KG!
Ah yes Meganulon ... we need a Bandai version besides the giant Xplus one which costs an arm and leg or then again there's the Iwakura or Marmit versions and the Bottlecap version
@@zhuangsaur227 I have the Marmit one, if that is the one where it looks like he is standing up and is a man in a suit. That one still cost me more than I want :/ But I like it for sure. I got the grey/blue one. But the black and red one of that is certainly a lot cooler.
@mgkiryuu ahaha I do not have the standing one but I've the brown one that is in the standard horizontal bug pose ... as a kid I was fascinated by Meganulon and found them rather cute due to the eyes and even the squeaky bug like sounds
@mgkiryuu this year better be the Showa King Ghidorah year especially since the Bandai Premium one costs crazy amounts... I plan to get the model kit one 1/350 scale and of course the Bandai Premium one one day ... going a hit miss on the Deagostini one
Bandai 1984 Ghidorah Showa 😊 ... I recalled getting mine as a 2017 Xmas gift 🎁 he's been sitting on my desk for years 😊 and is a useful card holder and helps compare size scaling to big figures
I got started collecting during the 1992 releases, so it was all Heisei Ghidorah by then.
@@ShowaShowcase haha my Principal (I work as a head teacher at my school) which she gave me a Thank You Card and its been what my King Ghidorah been holding haha

Henceforth an open mindedness in collecting is useful 😊 I plan to get a Monsterarts Bandai Playmates or even ofc YMSF versions of figures
I completely agree. I've limited myself due to accessibility.
I can tell you that YMSF Rodan 64 and 56 scale nicely to one another and yet are distinct... though I wonder if Rodan 64 is canonically one of the 1956 survivors or an offspring of the two whom succumbed to Mt Aso fumes
That's ny headcannon!
@@ShowaShowcase most likely Rodan 64 is an offspring given he doesn't look as sinister as the 56 Rodan pair
@@ShowaShowcase hmmm you use email or social media like LINE? Would be happy to Toylaborate haha
@ShowaShowcase actually last night I took out my Bandai 1991 Rodan 56 and the Ymsf Rodan 56 and lined them with the Ymsf Rodan 64 ... scales nicely and reminds me of my older cousins Godzilla compendium book from the 90s of the Rodan generations
When I gotta the Bandai Creations King Caesar in 2013 ... I recalled putting a Lego top hat on his head... and playing the late Scatman Johns Imma Scatman song... just fitted his theme oddly 😅
🤣🤣🤣
I always wondered if I liked the Imago Mothra or Mothra Larva haha
I saw larva more as a kid, so it was always weird when I saw Mothra...looking like a moth😅
@@ShowaShowcase used to think of large California Rolls wrapped on long foil as Mosura larva...and also used to use single Lego stick bloks as a Mothra Larva substitute
@@ShowaShowcase first Mosura larva toy I got was in July 2000 ... was a 1998 Godzilla Movie Monster Series version of the 92 Larva

I'm just glad Varan got a vinyl figure at all, its certainly better than the recent Kaiser Ghidorah figure. That was a disappointment.
Oh agree wholeheartedly! I am happy I have him. And yeah that Keiser Ghidorah is wretched. I'm glad I still have the original larger one!
@@ShowaShowcase Hoping they'll reissue that one eventually, or make one closer to it.
This Godzilla 1955 is similar but is not just a repaint of the Memorial Box Godzilla 55
I wonder how YMSF Titanosaurus would stack...
As a kid I used the Trendmasters Rodan as a fill in for all Rodans and if I was rollplaying I'd use 2 corncobs to pretend to be his crest horns and make Rodan sounds lol
Omg thats hilarious!!
Armor Rodan? Woah scales excellently as Rodan 2019 is the shortest but also wirh largest wingspan
Yeah its a good sculpt too!
Now all you need is a YMSF RODAN!!!
Im still confused by Baragon 65 and 68 as the latter is a smaller Baragon whilst the former apparently got a different nose design
I recalled 4 months earlier in January on a visit to Downtown Tokyo I got a YMSF flying Hedorah so not the 2022 version but an older version haha cost about 50 USD LOL
I still wonder if this Varan is meant to be Varan 58 or 68??? Btw waiting for years? YMSF rodans are one a decade in the making ...
Lol! Wow!
@@ShowaShowcaseand my YMSF RODAN HAS ARRIVED!!!
Hi there hedorah is my favorite how do they feel like?

A Daghara figure would have to come with a Belvera figure too
I wouldn't be mad at that!
I never knew I wanted a Hedorah collection, until now. 🥰
Then I have done my job! Thanks for watching!
2 years ago in 2022 YMSF did release a Hedorah set you get Hedorah, Flying Hedorah, and an aqua stage and a captured Godzilla 71 ....
'64 Godzilla is easily my personal favourite Showa look next to the '54 original.
While he's not my personal #1, its in the top 5
Is the MMS Varan meant to be 58 or 68 Varan???
Good question. I assumed it was the 58, but now that I consider it, maybe the latter?
Last year YMSF released 2 versions of Godzilla 64 one is open mouth other is closed mouth ... you could nearly pass one as the Ghidorah 3 Headed Monster Godzilla even though the suit was the same used in 64 BUT the head was revised with reduced upper lips, movable eyes and elongated tongue
This Gojira 64 is very distinct to the Original Memorial Box One
I wish I had it on hand to show the distinctions.

Have you any YMSF figures? YMSF Ebirah compares well to the Bandai Ebirah
I haven't dipped my toe into YMSF yet. How are they comparable to the standard Bandai? Many look very nice, and they seem to produce figures that Bandai hasn't touched yet. Are they expensive?
@ShowaShowcase yes. YMSF ALSO makes figures of Kaiju that Bandai may not yet make which is pretty unique such as for instance Manda 1968 or Varan 1968 or King Kong 1967 but sculpt and quality wise they are superior to Bandai
@@ShowaShowcase YMSF figures can be fairly pricey up to 50 to 60 to 70 USD before shipping
As a kid I've always substituted MOGERA 94 in place of Moguera 57 haha....I've 3 copies of the Moguera 57 figure ... one of them is intact with antennas. I also have a Marmit Moguera 57 figure haha
You sound like you might be a Mysterians enthusiast!
