Nice overview. My research on California Tornado Statistics [1950-2022] found two F3 tornados since 1950. An F3 in Riverside County on August 16,1973 and an F3 in Orange County on February 9,1978.
After all these years, I understand now what quagmire meant about sand people. As a kid I also thought he was talking about Tusken Raiders, but now- jeez.

Tornadoes 🌪 are very rare in California. They mostly occur in Texas and Arkansas,Oklahoma and Indiana.
I remember the Joshua tree one that hit the elementary school and about 4 properties nearby. What a site unfortunately in 2003 I didn't have a high tech camera to record 😕.
I'm not pleased with finding out we have tornados in Cali.
They happen more in CenCal aka Central San Joaquin Valley. I remeber hearing the EAS tone for a tornado warning back in 2020. We don't get them often, but when we do, it's scary without a doubt. Here's a link to a recent one. m.ruclips.net/video/6xIB2xCR_eg/видео.html
@@ypk1580 a warning? Wow. I dont remember us having a tornado warning since 25 years ago in 1998. I was 12 at the time and remember the clouds seemed almost stationary for days.
The fire-tornado during the Carr fire was a high end EF3, and quite possibly an EF4, though some of the damage done, heat vs wind, is unclear. Houses were slabbed, the ground was scoured, vehicles were thrown, and trees were shredded and debarked. There is quite a bit of footage of it too, stove pipe to wedge. I suggest you check it out. It is objectively the most powerful "tornado" California has ever seen. Unfortunately this funnel did cause loss of life though not nearly as much as the fire that birthed it. Terrible event all around, but it is scientifically significant
I always new we had EF0s and sometimes EF1s but that crazy 2018 Carr fire tornado is a whole new monstrosity. As you said, It's definitely is the highest rated tornado in California, and even rivals the highest rated fire tornado on record in the world, albeit with a much different behavior from what I understand. Crazy how it seems there are only two recorded examples of that magnitude -something large and violent enough that resembles an actual "tornado".
FYI, Tornadoes are classified by the Fujita Scale (i.e, F1, F2, etc). Hurricanes are classified by category. You mention one tornado was classified at category 3, do you mean F3?

Tornadoes occur in every state. In California the main area where they occur is the central valley. But los angeles did have a deadly and strong tornado in early March 1983. Tornadoes in California are uncommon though as compared to midwest tornadoes.

Yeah, aside from the Carr fire tornado, we do get the occasional EF1 - living in the central valley myself it's pretty scary knowing that an EF1 can still flip a car or throw a fence post into your face. Or just break all your windows and since nobody has weather insurance here you're paying out-of-pocket.

@@juankroosfrausto7411 We had an EF2 and two EF1s in 2020, we also get plenty of EF0s every year. In 2015 an EF1 touched down outside of Modesto (where about I was living at the time), it damaged 20 houses. It's pretty surreal when it happens here, but you rarely hear about the ones that are just over farmland.
