Not gonna lie, the redesigns alone have me out of it. I completely avoid videos that feature them, and usually just stick to the era I watched when it was new- ~2015-2018.

Multi-colored Marios, smg4 going on random adventures with Mario,Mario being naked with his spaghetti and other random 💩 is what made me fall in love with the classic smg4. Heading into 2017 I felt that smg4 was gradually phasing out everything I loved about the classics and when meggy was turned to human, winning the last splatfest, and getting a human voice I felt smg4 was crossing to the point of no return with more character building and being to serious.

The new character designs is grabbing a known character, redesign it to the point that it's a completely new character and give it the personality of a supportive shonen character (like grab Captain Olimar from Pikmin, change it massively design and personality-wise and now he's Captain Courtley, with "good guy" being his only personality trait.)

Fun fact: Luke and his older friends created smg 4 videos not Kevin, Kevin Just joined SMG4. I think when the year when Smg4 and his friends meet boopkins also 2012 Luke is the only one who created smg 4 videos

Dark humor in older smg4 is way funnier than new smg4: nowadays feels like I'm watching the kid friendly SNG4

To be honest, this could be avoid, if SMG4 did all his changes in a paralel gmod universe like MarioVz18 did, gta san andreas for serious plot and some character developement, and gmod for goofy and comedy. (for example) I remember be a huge fan of him, I even tolerated some of the worst videos(like boys vs girls) until the super Mario Maker 2, that's when i dropped the channel, unfunny and a waste of time, unworthy sequel in my opinion. And what the SMG4 channel transformed, dam, another corporate youtube channel, when it was a special one. Even thought, I understood why they changed but still don't like how they did it.

The thing is if you're into gmod machinimas and animation, you're likely to realise that MSG4's gmod has always looked bottom of the barrel in terms of quality, either from low effort or lack of trying, which is why the switch to it is rather baffling and I've always thought it was just out of laziness.

Modern Smg4 has lost its edge. Thats the problem.

They started adding anime characters and they ruined a lot, because their personalities were not funny. I never laughed at any of them at all, their side characters no one really cared about, mario and smg4 originally were just best funny ones. But then adding in serious characters just doesnt go well in a comedy show usually and that shows in smg4

I never got banned from smg4 but my parents highly discouraged them, i forgot about smg4 at like 2020 and came back around 2022

For me, the show was fine until "It's Gotta Be Perfect", where Peach got thrown under the bus for no good reason and the worst SMG4 character EVER got released - fucking Puzzles bitch ass. Can't wait until that worthless waste of brain space gets his final vid.

Man I sarted the channel to recapture the early magic of SMG4, remade some and make like 2 videos but kinda got distracted with other stuff whoops. I have no clue if making those kind of videos on youtube in 2024 is sustainable even but who knows.

I think a big thing to think about, at least now a year later, when discussing Glitch in tandem with SMG4 is that Glitch isnt 'The Side Project' anymore. Quality over Quantity makes more money for them, so while they may be able to pump out constant smg4 episodes they wither in comparison to episodes of their Glitch shows. Glitch started as making shows for characters in the SMG4 series, but as we can see now thats not the case anymore. Glitch is no longer the side project, SMG4 is.

Late to the party, but this just came up in my recs and thought i'd yap a little bit cuz I have nothing else to do rn To me, in a way, Desti's death is synonymous to the death of the "golden era" SMG4 imo. It maybe wasn't the start (since that has already begun at that point) of the "downfall", but it sure felt like the tipping point to me at least, at which I as the viewer realized it's just not going to be the same anymore. Been watching SMG4 since I was 10 years old in 2013 and barely even understood English (not a native speaker). Now I'm 21 and don't watch at all anymore, but once in a blue moon i still revisit some of the older vids and find myself enjoying them as much as I did back in the day. But the modern stuff just sucks (also I think this change was done after the video's release date but my god the new castle is so ass). It's still good to see that the channel is succeeding anyways, since it helps finance the other GLITCH projects I guess (I like Murder Drones more than I should), but man. Doubt ur reading this, but good video, many of the points you made summed it up pretty much perfectly.

I remember the content he made back in 2011, the main reason I subbed to him instead of other mario 64 skit creators is because while everyone did serious anime like skits, he would just focus 100 percent on random humor. Then (I wanna say it was around the time Meggy was introduced) is when it suddenly flipped. Even though I don’t really watch him these days I was proud to see him go from very small to a million subs over the years.

So many people hate on modern SMG4, while I'm just chilling, not caring about analyzing too much of his videos, and just enjoy his videos because they are fun imo

I had the same thoughts as you. I literally comapred 2 videos from SMG4 (1 old, 1 new) and in the new one i only laughed onced, while the old ones made me laugh quite alot. Everything was different, Animation, Editing, and writing was very different. My favourite era was the guards n ret4rd to 2018 era. Humor, charm, and obvious developed style (you can tell there are some inspiration from arby n the chief)

i feel like they may have sacrificed too much with their arcs and everything. the videos just cannot really be normal videos without being part of some arc series. also the newer videos dont really have the same funny content as the old ones.

i still laugh quite a bit at his old animations, he sacrificed humor to add more characters and story, when really we just want more funni mario saying funni stuff, especially since weegeepie left youtube.

Really, I feel as though SMG4 had to die so that GLITCH could rise from it's ashes like a phoenix, & it definetly did, Meta Runner kinda peak ong, but instead of SMG4 being left as this sacred idol to their origins the ashes just kinda started writhing around & spitting up poorly written anime ocs & dramatic scenes that make people wanna off themselves from second hand embarasssment (i am people)

Back in the day i wanted more fun gmod videos and there wasn't many options so i just got hooked on smg4 and I wasn't too worried about it but maybe it's the same for all major channels on RUclips...the real change is money...replaces the other value we need...fun

imo meta runner was the last good thing they made, as for glitch, Meta runner and Digital Circus are the only 2 decent series', Meta runner being better. I couldn't make it past episode 2 of sunset paradise because of how uncaptivating it was, same goes for murder drones the plots were just really really dry and slow and the jokes did not land at all for me
