Sutton Scarsdale Hall - the tragic fate of an English stately home
Просмотров 6603 месяца назад
Sutton Scarsdale Hall was once a grand example of 18th century English architecture, but now stands as a haunting relic of the past. Built in 1724 for the 4th Earl of Scarsdale, the hall was a symbol of wealth and power, on a scale with Chatsworth House. When the owners' fortunes fell into decline, so did the hall. By the early 20th century, it was stripped of its valuable materials, with parts...

Wearing Hi Vis is the modern carpenters trick.
Brave king
Civil wars are the worst wars.
Just organised sadism.
There was pretty much one Lord for the whole area ( Tidenham)
Why do we need more than one person delivering this , this typical of the crap on British TV , stick to one.
ts time for ireland to become a polish speaking country
Reparations for Moore's men
Isn't he the one who murdered the two little princes they found the skeletons of recently?
His plan was to kill the queen with his spikey beard. She would have stood little chance .
Republic now
He would have prayed before the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar!!!!
Finally something Welsh
This is a castle I have never heard of so thank you for uploading, hope one day to visit.
Watch out no one gets offended with British history!!! 🤔✊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
the irish eternal victims are always ready and waiting to whinge
So as a man of Welsh descent I am supposed to admire their king's magnanimity.!#%*#
Totally worth it
Saeson dewch yma.
North Wales is a lovely place, over the years I’ve visited many of the castles, so much real history, some castles even have the old town walls intact and you can walk around them,, north Wales countryside is beautiful, too much to describe here, Salford uk
who are the english ? who's crown ? what legacy ?
😭😭😭cry
it's interesting that the genocide on the welsh by the english doesn't get reconised
Don’t mention genocide and English, they don’t like it….
For more details see the relevant Time Team episode. It’s fun.
War is stupid and war is hell and will never be anything else.
war built the world
Windsors are actors who sold you to middle east. They pretend to wear the crown only, so muslims are not attacked for pimping your children out.
Eng civil war? WHICH YR. 35BC- 1700AD WAS WAR FREE?
Sieging and waiting for a relief army was a typical way of warfare, most famously Vienna 1683. The men of Hopton castle were unlucky with no relief army showing up.
English Civil War ended in a genocide of the Irish
Perfectly reasonable by the time's expectations and for good reasons. 'Woodhouse warned that, in accordance with the prevailing code of warfare, if surrender was again refused, the garrison should expect no mercy ('quarter'). A reasonable convention intended to dissuade defenders from holding out against impossible odds, the challenge had no effect on More and the attack was resumed.' Forcing heavy loss of lives on the attacker by not surrendering an impossible position. If you had a reputation for not putting it into effect all other cases would drag out sieges and force huge losses to take them. Too easy for modern people to put their modern soft easy lives' attitudes onto the past.
It call civil war, bring the worst out on all sides. You should not judge people too negatively. Remember, people in those times had a different attitude to properly.
Running out of wine is no joke.
How hard is it to say "Conwy" instead of "Conway"? 🙄
Such a magnanimous fellow he is, I'm sure they said!
So, why didn't Woodhouse just take them walkeze?
owain glynderrr. urgh
It was normal to be given a little time to surrender but if you refused, death was normally expected.
As a Welshman i was lucky to be surrounded by beautiful castles, Chirk literally on my doorstep, then the very old, I'd say ancient ruins of crow castle (Dinas Bran) in Llangollen, then Hawarden kinda has a castle, Harlech, caernafon castle, tthere ate many in various conditions.
Cromwell needlessly turned his cannon on many a Welsh castle .
@@redwater4778 its time for ireland to become a polish speaking country
The civil war was brutal, even for them days, there was two English civil wars wasn't there?
Historian Simon Schama calls the English Civil War the British Wars. There were in fact more than two, and every nation in the British Isles took part. The fighting started in Ireland and finished in Ireland. The death toll of Irish far outnumbered that of the other three nations combined.
Started by the Scot's , against a Stuart King go figure
@@farmerned6 Is this a private fight or can anyone join in?
@@mikekelleher6940 the irish have got nothing to do with the english civil war other than they attacked english and scottish protestants in ireland and caused cromwell to go over and avenge them
@@test-201 It’s remarkable how much disinformation you managed to cram into a single sentence. It would require several thousand words to educate you on exactly what happened back then, and I have neither the time nor the patience. Your biggest mistake is thinking of the Clvil War(s) as an isolated incident. Do your own research, a good starting point would be reading up on the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Of, by the way, the Irish were not specifically targeting Protestants, but outsiders who had stolen their lands and killed their kin. The English and Scots in Ireland were not settlers but invaders.
What I find unbelievable about Battle of Bosworth is that nobody talks about how close Richard got to killing Henry.
Yes as I remember, from reading about it . Richards horse stumbled on muddy ground by the side of a stream, as he saw Henry . He charged at him on horse back . But was thrown to the ground, and killed be Henry's supporters !
@@welshpete12Richard attached Henry just next to the marsh, and after his charge failed, his group was pushed into the marsh where his horse toppled over. Vergil's account is being dismissed as propaganda(it is! doesn't mean it is inaccurate in this though. He does make omission though-he leaves out Richard took Henry's party by total surprise.) Yet he had best access to survivors of the battle, and gives the most warrior-badass version of Richard from all the accounts of the battle. It may seem odd-coming from Henry's camp, but the way it is written is consistent with being eye-witness testimony. Unfortunately it describes multiple events happening at once and readers then don't get what is written there. -Richard got to Henry. Henry only stays on foot after that, because he doesn't wishes for second round with Richard. (There was no time to hide initially even if he wanted to.)
Execution of prisoners was not limited to Royalists. Parliamentarian forces were also guilty. Cromwell's army was guilty of massive atrocities eg in Ireland.
Cromwell's soldiers murdered many thousands of civilians who took refuge in the cathedral on the Mount of Cashel.
Blessings from the dragon
And the Irish committed atrocities (massacres of English and Scottish Protestant settler) that caused him to be there Further Cromwell ordered Drogheda to Surrender OR HE WOULD PUT THE GARRISION TO THE SWORD They didn't surrender, Cromwell kept his word, that was their fault
@@farmerned6 The Irish need to be reminded of such facts, as even today, a one sided story is presented on many issues in Ireland.
@@farmerned6 The English and Scottish Protestant settler helped the 'Native' Catholic Irish, the 'Native' American Indians, the 'Native' Australian Aboriginals and the 'Native' New Zealand Maori cultivate their land (minus the natives) For King and Country. For the victorious English Republican Army of Oliver Cromwell, it was for the Headless King and Country.
Very well presented.
Please pronounce Glyndŵr right
Ohhh please please please do Hertford castle ❤
Seems like such a waste of such brave men...........
When you dish it out, you're going to get it back.
