Bolsover Castle - a fairytale Stuart mansion
Bolsover castle has a rich history, from medieval origins to its transformation by Sir Charles Cavendish in the 17th century. What was once a Norman stronghold built to control the north of England by William the Conqueror, became a masterpiece of Renaissance art and architecture.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall - the tragic fate of an English stately home
Просмотров 536Месяц назад
Sutton Scarsdale Hall was once a grand example of 18th century English architecture, but now stands as a haunting relic of the past. Built in 1724 for the 4th Earl of Scarsdale, the hall was a symbol of wealth and power, on a scale with Chatsworth House. When the owners' fortunes fell into decline, so did the hall. By the early 20th century, it was stripped of its valuable materials, with parts...
Bamburgh Castle - The Last Kingdom - we discover the real Anglo -Saxon fortress
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.2 месяца назад
Bamburgh castle is an iconic fortress overlooking the North Sea on the rugged coast of Northumberland. Its history dates back to the 6th century when it served as a Saxon fort. Originally the capital of the kingdom of Bernica, it became a target for both the Vikings and Normans thanks to its strategic importance. Today it stands as a symbol of English heritage, thanks to the restoration works o...

CHILLINGHAM CASTLE - gruesome medieval torture chamber, oubliette and dungeon!
If you have any disability or movement issues you should be aware of the worn uneven steps leading up to the entrance from the entrance from just past the tearoom entrance and throughout the building. Apart from that the visit is extremely worthwhile .My last visit was just prior to COVID so it may have changed.
I want some boring person to lay out the facts. Not this appeal to the lowest denomimator.
Beautiful castle, your commentary is always great!! Very interesting, Love your videos.
💚
My name is Saxon
Fantastic place, we used to take our kids there. I can confirm it is haunted.
Nice trip down memory lane for me. I stayed there on a school trip in the 70s'.
Absolutely brilliant my favourite castle
This water business is nonsense. There are about a hundred priest holes still in existence (one probable one of which is at Samlesbury, up in the attics). Their entrances are all from upstairs rooms, well away from the building entrances and out of sight of servants. Hides were very closely guarded secrets, their locations known only to the master and mistress of the house and the priest(s). This fireplace is in the ground floor room into which the front door opens. Now, it was standard practice when houses were searched for the servants to be ordered to resist the entry of the searchers for as long as possible. This had two benefits: (1) it bought extra time for the priest to get hidden and and (2) it got the servants - who could be government spies, and might be bribed or threatened into revealing anything they knew - out of the way and meant they didn't see where the priest was hidden. Think a bit about the practicalities of this story. There are searchers banging on the door and you're a priest needing to hide. The last thing you want to do is to go downstairs - towards the searchers, into the room they will enter first when the door gives way, the room which is full of servants resisting their entry - and, having spent precious seconds soaking your clothes, draw attention to yourself by clambering through a burning fire in full view of everyone. Due to the fire, there can't be a camouflaged wooden door covering the back of the fireplace, so once the searchers do get in you're still perfectly visible to anyone who looks into it, and the clouds of steam you're now giving off are clearly advertising your location. Until either you dry out, (at which point you roast), or the fire dies down (and the searchers reach in and pull you out). Chimney stacks are common locations for hides, but if the space at the back of this fireplace was ever a hide then the fireplace brickwork was intact and the hide was entered from the floor above.
Noooooooooo, this haunts my dreams! I’ve been here before in my dreams! Okay enough RUclips tonight, er TikyTaky
Nice little documentaries, I think you should be getting more recognition.
Thanks for sharing!
I hope to visit one day. I am William Marshal, 24 great grandson

Perfect day out as there's a wetherspoons right outside the castle 😂 curry pint Castle

Absolute nonsense
Why do you say it's nonsense?
@@denisrobinson7927 because none of that happened at Bamburgh castle it was no more than an extra home to the Duke of Northumberland . The Percy family
@colinwallace3993 how is your knowledge greater on the subject? Have you got some point of reference to share?
Not to far from me

I bet they wanted to stop these boats too. But how can you resist long haired blonde dudes with dreamy blue eyes! 😂😅
They owe us reparations!
As a Swedish Viking I say no.
@@tomeng9520Sounds to me like you don't even know what a Viking was 😂
@@chrissycee90 My family descends directly from the Viking Age. So fc of.
@@tomeng9520 Yeah 'the Viking age', it's in the title, absolutely nothing to do with you. You're a Swede. I'm Irish-Norse but would never say 'as a Norweigan Viking' come on dude.
@@chrissycee90 You are the one who doesn't understand. My family name originates from the Viking Age. If you're not born and raised in Sweden and white, you're not a Viking, but I am.

How many boats do you think discovers an armada or a fleet? How many men do you think they really had??
Gav & Jo, this was excellent! WOW, is all I can say, what a powerhouse Bamburgh is! Would absolutely love to visit there especially after watching this excellent video!! It was absolutely fascinating to listen to Lauren and hear her explain about the coin hoard, so so interesting! & see inside that grand hall, what a place. Thank you both, inspiring!
Thank you so much for your very kind compliments. So pleased you enjoyed this episode 🏰
Thanks guys, so glad you enjoyed it! Definitely worth a visit, the beach is stunning with views to St Oswald's chapel and Lindisfarne
If that's your wife, you're punching pal. 😂😂
As a descendant of King Arthur and Mrs Bouquet I really appreciated this video.
A great blend of Gavin's castles and arms and armour expertise, Jo's historical knowledge and the film maker's wonderful photography. The drone shots really show off the true scale of this spectacular building. I used to think of Bamburgh as a largely Victorian/Edwardian re creation. How wrong I was! The archaeological dig is shedding light on the much longer history of the site. Would have liked the video to end with Gavin and Jo on horseback galloping along the beach with the castle as a backdrop! Makes me want to go there, and, I guess, that's the real purpose of your videos. Well done GVC team.
That would've been a magnificent ending!
They didn't use boiling oil - they used boiling water or hot sand - oil was far too precious and expensive to waste like that!
Very cool love it
Amazing video guys !🔥🏰
There were NO Saxon kings in Northumbria. It was the Angles and the Frisians who were in Northumbria. The Saxons were in the south. Do Sussex, Essex, Wessex not ring a bell?
I get where you are coming from, I would suggest Edwin, who married Æthelburh, a Princess from Kent. Though Æthelfrith was the first Anglo-Saxon leader to hold lands north and south.
I enjoy all of Go Visit Castles videos 🎉😊
My mother is a Norwegian!! I am 74%. My mother’s lineages are related to the royals today and the past far back!! On my father’s side William the conqueror is my grandfather, way great. Also Charlemagne is long distance grandfather on my fathers side. I do have royal blood on both side but not raised as one. Just a farmer!! Lol!! Lots of love from Tennessee!!!
Have you any connection to Ming the Merciless ?
Amazing video guys. The footage, information and the drone aerial views Outstanding. I was lucky enough to fly it in 2022 its on my channel
Thanks! It's a stunning place for aerial shots
Not many would have the courage to do that. Heroes
