Smart Fortwo (451) Valve Guide Replacement

This video shows how to replace worn valve guides. So far every cylinder head I've disassembled had worn out exhaust valve guides (regardless of engine mileage). On all those engines, I've never seen a worn out intake valve guide. So if you're replacing a head gasket, you probably want to replace the exhaust valve guides too. So far I've found a 100% exhaust valve guide failure rate. SPECIAL NO...

    I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for this video! It really helped me solve the smoking issue with my Smart car. After watching, I checked the compression first (which is always a good starting point to rule out bigger problems) and confirmed I had good compression. Then, capping off the PCV valve hose as suggested helped stop the smoke, pointing me in the right direction for a proper fix. I hope this comment helps others who might be facing a similar issue. Thanks again for sharing this valuable information!

    How do you do the valve adjustment on these engines. Mine needs it pretty bad and I noticed that the valve assembly isnt like a normal assembly for most engines? Mines just a plain W451 from 2012

    • @Arizonaperfect
      @Arizonaperfect 12 дней назад

      There is no easy way to adjust the engine valve lash on these engines. The cam(s) have to be removed to get to the buckets located under the camshaft. So you will have to remove the timing chain to get the cam(s) out.The buckets come in different thicknesses to adjust the clearance between the cam and bucket. I'm assuming you have a noisy valve train? The real question is what caused the excessive valve lash? I would start with removing the valve cover and measuring all the valve lash clearances with a feeler gauge to find out which which one(s) are out of spec. The only way the valve lash can get out of specifications is having a worn out camshaft lobe, worn out bucket, or a both being wore out. These engines are not known for wiping out camshaft lobes.

    Hi, could you please help me to understand nature of the problem related with my 2015 Smart fortwo 451? During one of my night trips on a highway I heard that the radiator fan was blowing on a maximum speed and also check engine light appeared and cold air was blowing from the heater. Outside themperatute was about 5 degreesr Celcius. I spopped the vehicle to check wih ELM OBD 2 scaner. Unfortunately I dont rememer axactly the error code number but it was related to coolant temperature sensore rate. Coolant temperature on ELM application was showing 40 degreece celcius.I has delited the error code, started engine. No more radiator fan sound. So, next day I replace the coolant temperature sensore but unfortunatelly no difference same story next day. So after investigation I found that the thermostate got stuck in open position. I ordered a new one (Febi/ Bilstain). After replacement ( only thermostate) there isn't any difference. Qustion. It coold be the thermostate housing has some deformation due to possible overheating in a passt? How is high the chance of deformation?

    I never owned a Ford or any Chrysler product. But in hindsight one of the biggest mistakes I ever made in life was in the late 70s when a dude that I knew from High School owned a 1969 Dodge Charger in super nice condition. Red w/ Black interior and automatic on the floor with console and black bucket seats. His steering went out and it had a couple of other minor issues - he said he didn't want to get "Nickle and Dime'd" fixing things on the car. I at the time just never considered it as I was more into 1972 Cutlass Convertibles. So he sold it for like $3,000 measley dollars. A fender for that car today costs that. I could shoot myself for not buying that car.

    Did you ever think it could be a "push rod or "rocker arm""? Was it that type of "knocking" noise? Our van had that timing chain noise at first and now it has a "knocking" (louder noise) which is at idle; but, the "knocking" noise comes and goes as we drove it. We quit driving the van until we can get a mechanic to look at it? Just curious if the "tap-tap-tap" noise increased to a "knocking"noise?

      When I first bought my C4 it ran okay, but idled like it had a performance camshaft. Took the Optispark apart and found corrosion inside the distributor cap. If you've never worked on the Optispark, there's a good chance that's where the problem is located. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to work on, but that's a good place to start.

      I appreciate the reply, before I start ripping it down to the optispark. I did a diagnostic check with the on board computer. It pulled up a couple of codes two of them was the 02 census and the other throttle body sensor I checked, it was a weak signal I change that out first and then checked 02 and sure enough one of the wires on the driver side was burnt from the exhaust. I am going to reset the IAC when I get everything put together. I will let you know my findings. Hopefully it works out, if not I'll have to dig deeper to the opti. Thanks

    The other option is quite easy. Based on what you said about jacking up rear of car and it makes it worse, you can jack up the front end of the car and make it better. Doesnt have to be on stands, tilt the car back on a trolley jack to get more oil out then lower again. It's worth checking the condition of the drain bolt with the built in gauze filter. Mine was degrading in the plastic like bonded area of the gauze causing bits to flake off so I replaced it. They can be fitted super tight though which is a bit annoying.

    • @Arizonaperfect
      @Arizonaperfect 5 месяцев назад

      It doesn't help to jack up the front of the vehicle. The drain hole location is in the center of the oil pan and about 1/2 inch off the bottom of the oil pan. So jacking up the vehicle from the front, back, or from either side make the ability to drain the old oil completely gets worse. The only way to get all the old oil out is to use a vacuum oil extractor. FYI: The reason the oil pick up/drain hole was placed in the center of the oil pan is so there is no oil starvation during acceleration, deceleration, and cornering. The oil drain plug is part of the oil pickup system for the engine oil pump.

    • @Smart451-ut6df
      @Smart451-ut6df 5 месяцев назад

      @@Arizonaperfect Ah right, maybe front or rear tilt can a get a bit more out then if it sloshes the oil around. I didnt tilt for my last oil change, left it as it was. I got about 3.5 litres old out/new in. My Smart book says approximately 3.7litre capacity. so I could be having the 200ml old oil left in. I would think then that this is deliberate design for the oil pick up to avoid heavy contaminent/sludge in the very bottom of the sump in an engine that has not been looked after or serviced regularly?

    • @Arizonaperfect
      @Arizonaperfect 5 месяцев назад

      @@Smart451-ut6df I agree with you on the reason for the oil pick up is a 1/2 inch up from the bottom. I think they should have put a conventional drain plug and we could all skip this issue.

    I don't understand how there was no recall on these cars for this part.

    • @Arizonaperfect
      @Arizonaperfect 6 месяцев назад

      There has to be a safety issue before the government can force GM to recall for this issue. In this situation, the vehicle gives warning so the owner can fix the car. GM could issue an extended warranty or issue a Customer Satisfaction Notification, but they're not required to. There is no question in my mind that this was a faulty design and GM should have taken care of their customer with a fix for this issue. Unfortunately GM did not do that and now the cars are too old for any type of class action lawsuit.
