1986 F150 np435 to zf5 swap! plus 9" Fordrear end
We swapped in a zf5 Transmisson and a 9" ford rear axle in a weekend. Had to thrash an exhaust together so he could drive it to school on Monday.

Using our $300 Chevy C70 Dump Truck! Large wheelbarrow!
Просмотров 3432 месяца назад
This was the best the C70 has ran since we brought it home. Swapped the carb and found we had a bad vacuum leak. Found the fuel tank isn't vented, and we have a noisy wheel bearing. We were moving dirt for our yard MX track. Using the name "MX track" loosely, but we hope to have a real track one day.

We were back at one of our local tracks. it was pretty dry, but temps in the mid 80's made for a great day of riding. Our buddy @JamesWilliams-cr7di tagged along with his fpv drone and shot some video. go check out his channel!

What’s the exhaust set up?
Holley long tube headers, 2.5" duals back to 18 or 20" glass packs. It's turned down before the axle

Hey brother, you have a new subscriber here. I've been working on a C30 crew cab. But just picked up a C70 last week. I'm still trying to get the brakes working to get it from Kc to Garden city Kansas.
@@JSCB-365 thanks for the sub! Sounds like a good project!

@@michealjackson2923 thanks! The truck was really struggling from under hood heat. So we designed and printed the intake. Evan had just bought a k&n air filter so we just designed the intake around that.

Was wondering how hard it was to swap the 351? Wiring harness, computer, exhaust... I've got a 302efi And I want cruise control and air conditioning and it is almost impossible to find a donor truck that has those things plus a manuel transmission. However, I have found a bunch of donor pickups or broncos that have the 351 With ac, cruise control and a manuel transmission. So I was really curious to find out about the difficulties and the ins, and out of doing what you did
@@scottlazott7963 EFI would be great!. It would be a lot easier if you had an entire donor truck. It would just be work. Little things I didn't think about (or know) were the different size oil pump drives between the 302 and 351, so the distributor drive gears are different. The firing order is also different. The 351 is taller so the AC compressor bracket is different. This is where having them side by side would help. After this, it's just labor.
Did you have to drill new holes?
I did not. The crew cab split bench seats sit on a frame and it bolts to the floor the same way the 80's trucks do
We have since found some red buckets from an extended cab. Those have different bottom brackets, but we just swapped the lower brackets and all was good.

I have a 1986 F-150 XLT Lariat single cab SWB with the 5.0 EFI, NP435, NP208 transfer case, Dana 44 IFS, Ford 9" rear 3.50:1 and, yeah, I love my truck. I'd like to have the 351w, but they didn't go EFI until 1988 and I prefer the 80-86 body style. Also, I'm not sure if those trucks still got the NP435's in them. And I know starting in 1983, Ford started phasing out the Ford 9" rear with the 8.8" up through 1986. So, by 1987, there were only 8.8" rear ends. Of course, those are still excellent rear ends. Being 4x4, it has the 3.5" leaf springs (4x2 is 3") and I've got a stack of overload springs added. This thing don't squat. But, yeah, I'd like to have a 351w EFI in my truck... because I've became spoiled by this simple SD computer EFI system. It cranks every time, no matter how long it has sat or how long I've drove or what the temperature outside is (100F or -20F)... it will start first try. Plus, I got a bit more power than the carb 302 as my 5.0 EFI is rated 185 hp/270 ft-lbs torque. It's surprisingly quick lol. But, it's still a 5.0, so it's not a towing monster. I've towed up to 5000 pounds and yeah... I didn't like it. I was glad I was on some backroads. I live in east TN so it's hilly, and I was of course pulling some big hills, but 3rd gear on the NP435 is just able to pull anything. I'd have been more worried about needing to ride on a slightly quicker road at 45mph, because then I'd have to ride in 4th a lot more, and it'd feel like a dog. Towed a Jeep Cherokee weighing 3100 pounds + trailer (not sure on that weight) to the crusher once. Did okay, but again.... a 302 is a 302. It runs best empty haha. I dunno if it's the way these trucks sit or what, but it goes everywhere off road and on road when it snows and everyone is stuck at home, I go out riding for fun. Never had an issue and have even helped pull a few people out of ditches over the years. I run 31x10.50 15" Goodyear Wrangler Authority tires which have done nothing but pleasantly surprise me with their performance. But, yeah, half the reason I love my truck so much, besides being 100% reliable for the last 10 years, is that NP435. You have to love that transmission. 6.69:1 first gear. Off roading in 1st and 4x4 low lets you just idle down the steepest hills at what? 1-2 mph? No brakes needed. Daily driving, I don't use it unless having fun, but it is nice when towing something and you just wanna get rolling like nothing is behind you. 4.11:1 (9" uses 4.11:1, 8.8" is 4.10:1) would be nice IF I towed all the time, but yeah, as far as what I do, the 3.50:1 rear/front has been just right. I mean, it's no highway cruiser, 4th @ 55mph is 2400RPM if I remember correctly. 70mph is 3100RPM, and this truck starts making a different sound at that exact RPM, like the power is coming on. Regardless, somehow, someway, it gets 14mpg whether I'm putting around the backroads, going 55mph down a highway or 70mph down the interstate. 14mpg. It's all it knows.
@@JustAGuy85 Your truck sounds like an awesome rig. I personally hate to rock the boat, meaning if it works, love it how it is. I always have the fear of ruining a good thing by changing it.
@@brokewheels5 Yeah, I agree. I just always wonder how it'd feel with a 351w, BUT like you say, this 302 (or is it 5.0 when they're EFI lol?) has been reliable so I definitely can't pull it out. We practically have a bond at this point haha. I think it'll outlive me.

Hey! Have a question , do you need to press the gas to get these to start ?
@@jimoy7x this has an Edelbrock carb. When the engine is cold, you press the gas once to set the choke and it starts and high idles. Starting it when the engine is warmed up, you normally don't have to press the gas.
