Hiking & backpacking.
Day 3 - The Old Loggers Path - Loyalsock State Forest - PA
On Day 3 we cross a river and check out some other campsites and begin the long walk back to the start. This is the longest of the 3 days and by far the most challenging, but the weather was fantastic and the views colors were the best of the whole trip. Hope you enjoy!

It's a chilly morning in the hammock, but with some good coffee and warm oatmeal to get me started. It's a 10 mile hike, starting with an uphill climb right out of camp to get the circulation moving. Then it's lunch at the Doe Run Shelter, and a climb up to Sullivan Mountain for some nice views. Then a long descent into camp near Long Run. Beautiful weather and perfect temperatures. Hope you en...

Leaving camp on day 2 and climbing up to Black Dome to check out the view before heading back up to Blackhead Mountain to complete the loop. Then the long hike home along the Escarpment Trail back to North Point and back to the sttart. Some of the best views of the hike were on this day and the weather was absolutely perfect.

After 2 previous attempts I finally make it all the way from North Point to Blackhead Mountain on the Escarpment Trail in the Catskills. Checking out the amazing views along the way and feeling the very steep climbs, but at the end of the day it was very a rewarding hike.

Day 3 of a 3-day backpacking adventure around the Allegheny Front Trail in Moshannon State Forest in Pennsylvania. A long hike back to where we started, through high grass and ferns and checking out the campsites along the way. The final 3 miles back to the car were the most difficult part of the whole day but had the best views. If I could change anything about this hike, I would have gone clo...

Day 2 of a 3-day backpacking adventure around the Allegheny Front Trail in Moshannon State Forest in Pennsylvania. Today we check out the "Red" Moshannon Creek and get soaked by the many rhododendron tunnels along the trail after an overnight rain. And then hiking along Six Mile Run and check out the beautiful scenery. To learn more about the Moshannon Creek, check out these links below: Moshan...

Day 1 of a 3-day adventure around the Allegheny Front Trail in Moshannon State Forest in Pennsylvania in the middle of summer. Hot days, rain, bugs, long miles and overgrown trails. If that doesn't sound like fun, well it actually was! The trail was beautiful and more challenging than I expected, but worth it.

My second attempt to complete the Escarpment Trail in the Catskill Mountains of NY. The section from North Point to Blackhead Mountain is the last unexplored section for me to complete, but will I make it? Join me in my ongoing quest to complete this section of trail. Hope you enjoy!
Solo Hammock Camping in Pinchot State Forest, PA

A relaxing overnight adventure with no talking, no music, no animations, and no subtitles. Just the sights and sounds of nature, and my footsteps on the trail. This is my 3rd time hiking in this area, so I thought I'd try something different with this video. If you would like to know more of the details about which trails I hiked and how far, check out one of my previous videos in Pinchot. Rela...

A winter overnight up to Balsam Mountain and down the other side to the Rider Hollow Lean-To for some cold weather overnight camping. Not to be confused with Balsam "Lake" Mountain which has the fire tower at the top, Balsam Mountain is in the Big Indian Wilderness between Eagle Mountain and Belleayre Mountain.
Little Rock Pond - Appalachian Trail - VT

An icy cold overnight adventure in January in Vermont, hiking a few miles on the Appalachian Trail to a very frozen Little Rock Pond and camping overnight at the tenting area near the pond. Then hiking back out with a stop to check out the pond and the shelter before heading back to the trailhead. Beautiful views and lots of snow and ice!

A late Fall overnighter in the Big Branch Wilderness in Vermont, hiking up to Baker Peak to check out the view and then down to Griffith Lake for an overnight camp. Also checking out the Peru Peak shelter on the Appalachian Trail. A great little loop to hike with plenty of streams and little waterfalls, and lots of colors.

Can I ask what kind of a zip jacket I saw you wearing? It looked like a fleece . . .
It's a North Face hoodie that I've had for many years. It's mostly polyester.
@downtoearthadventures1528 thanks. I've been looking for something that I can actually afford that doesn't weigh 2 pounds.
Thank you so much for this!
Your videos are the best! I have done sections of the OLP but never the whole trail - I hope to do it in 2025.
You guys are lucky with your technology. I did it back in the 1990s. There were no go pros, no internet. I had a paper map.
Unfortunately, I left my jetpack at home for this trip, so I had to hike the whole trail on foot. For next trip I'll be cutting firewood with my light saber and having a pizza delivered to my campsite by drone. And my map won't be on paper, it will be a hologram. LOL
Another great trip in the books.
Love your video styles, definitely original and great…You are amongst the few that inspired me to start my own channel on backpacking/hiking. Thank you!
Nice video. I hike the OLP every year.
Good hike?
@ always.
Enjoyed the 3 videos of the OLP. You really showed a good deal of the trail itself giving me the "feel"of the trail. Guess I need to add this to my list. Thank you so much for sharing your excellent videos and I look forward to your next journey. Rainmaker ☔
Great video Great trail one of my favorites
Really like your videos in the Catskills including your recent 2024 Escarpment hikes as they refresh my memories. Grew up 3500' west of the Barnum Road Trailhead (which didn't exist at that time) left for college in 1966, never to permanently return. Initially between Maplecrest village and home there were only two other houses on the road and the Beer's farm was the closest neighbor. Barnum road was dirt with the farm at the upper end and only one or two summer homes otherwise. The road was not maintained in the winter and I remember Elmer Barnum pulling a sled down to the Maplecrest store and post office in town. In the summer he rode an Indian motorcycle or had a wagon pulled by an oxen. The only DEC trail I remember in those days was the one that started at Dr. Gunderson's (sp?) place at the east end of the hollow and went up Blackhead. Ruined a pair of new shoes one spring by climbing Blackhead before all the snow had melted (and sliding down grasping saplings along the way). I recall one Christmas several male members of the Hitchcock family and some of their friends climbed and camped out on top of Blackhead leading to some interesting stories. Big Hollow was settled in the 1790's by a member of the Hitchcock family and one of his descendants, Elwood Hitchcock, authored a book, "Big Hollow," in 1993 published by Black Dome Press Corp., that gives a short history of the area before the invasion fostered by the completion of the NYS Thruway. Contrary to one of the comments below, more people leaving NYC and settling in the Catskills will not enable a comeback. Locals have been driven from the area by a flood of weekend home purchasers who replaced summer vacationers. By the way, the second "a" in Batavia is a long "a".
Wow, thanks for sharing your memories of this area. I didn't know about all of this history. Also, I didn't realize I was pronouncing "Batavia" incorrectly since I never actually heard anyone say it. But it makes sense now that you mentioned it. Glad you enjoyed watching the videos.
Great second day on trail.
Thanks, Dragon!
Downhill to end the day at camp - ideal. I bring my string lights along sometimes to lift my morale. Still struggling to find a freeze dried meal that works for me. Looking forward to seeing day 3.
Have you tried Pinnacle Foods?
If you've never tried Packit Gourmet - Texas State Fair Chili, then you don't know what you're missing! LOL
I've never tried Pinnacle Foods, and many other brands. I'm kinda stuck on just bringing my old favorites, but I should probably try some new meals and see what else is good.
Thank-you for the video. We have hiked part of it and hope to complete it this Spring!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you get to finish the trail in the Spring!
Awesome day 1 love the wilderness edition by the way we have been thinking of upgrading our outback. I always think of camping in that area but it has never lined up well with my planned mileage. Be interesting to see of the Rattlesnakes are out when you get to the rock outcrop section we have seen them there as late as the end of Sept.
Thanks Dragon! I've been very happy with the Outback Wilderness so far, and it's my favorite piece of hiking gear. It handles those mountain logging roads very well. LOL
Thanks for the video! I'm planning to do this trail in the Spring and can't wait!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Have fun getting out there in the Spring!
Nice OBW…😂 I have one too. 🥾🥾😎⛺️
Thanks! I'm enjoying the Wilderness edition so far. Sounds like I'm in good company! LOL
Awesome stuff 👍🏻
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved watching this! My husband and I are doing this trail in the spring. We enjoy every video you put on and look forward to them! Thank you for putting the work and effort into making these videos.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the videos. Have fun out there on the OLP this Spring!
Nice video. I’ve camped in that same spot several times.
Thanks! It really is the prime spot for either your first night or your last night on the OLP. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Love your videos, and love this trail! Thank you for all the great work you put into this.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome to High Peaks trails (read rocks and mud. Lol!) and Adirondack biting critters. Try this hike during the peak of black fly season and you're really know the meaning of biting bugs. 🙂
Thanks! Since my Adirondacks trip (and my later Alaska trip which also had insane mosquitos), I now carry a head net on every hike. I consider it essential survival gear! LOL
Garmin GPS maps have the STS trails included. Been hunting Hammersley for 40 yrs.
Backpackers are ruining this trail with their campsites.
I love the gps fly overs. Also we will never know if you got that burger and Coke !!!!!!
Thanks Jay! Maybe I got a post-hike salad instead, but that's not likely. We'll never know. LOL
@ after that epic trip you can have both
Easy to miss that sign but that's where it pays to question yourself. Great hike thanks for taking us along.
That's what happens when you skip morning coffee and try to start hiking with your brain not fully functional yet. LOL
That was B E A UTIFUL 😊 I feel you should have stopped for water. Just a thought 🙂
Yeah, just for curiosity sake I kinda wish I did the out and back to the spring, if only to document it for next time, or for anyone else planning to do the trail. It would good to know for future hikes. The risk is that if the spring is unreliable then the situation is made even worse by going the extra distance. It's hard to know the right choice sometimes. Glad you enjoyed the video.
i did marcy this autumn solo. got a lot more snow and even ice while i summited by the route you took to descend, it was hard but absolutly beautiful. i hope i have the change to do your route during the summer tho. Great video btw!!!
Wow, I can't imagine doing that side of Marcy when there's snow and ice, knowing how incredibly steep it is. But I'll bet it was amazing with all the fall colors though. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Why would you hike without a sturdy walking stick
To each his own, I guess. One less piece of gear to carry for me. And if I were to lose them or break one then I'd rather not have a dependency on them for my primary mode of travel. If I ever do need something I'll just grab a branch and then toss it away when I'm done with it.
@downtoearthadventures1528 YES I watched you take a pretty hard spill on your waterway crossing I would always recommend that you use some kind of support stick to prevent a major injury when crossing waterways you should know better as an experienced hiker this could have been debilitating I'm glad you didn't break anything 5 miles is a long way out with a broken or sprained leg or hip
@@georgepreis706 yep, I got lucky that time. It could have been much worse. I still think about that moment every time I go out. Coming back alive and uninjured is always the primary goal of any hike. And knowing just how likely it can to happen at any random moment makes me all the more cautious. I should have used a good stick in that situation. Let's be safe out there!
Where have you been, always enjoyed your videos
@@150F2011 Thanks! Still catching up on my backlog of videos. Glad to know you are enjoying them!
I like yours videos!!!!
The hike up to the Beaver Meadow lean too is nice also
That is a really nice hike. I have done it 3 times. Lots of wildlife and lots of wild flowers in the spring.
Looks like a nice stream to fish for wild brook trout!
Part of an old stone fence or foundation that someone put a cairn on top of it.
Thx for sharing. I always enjoy ur videos.
Great hike. Overall nice trail a bit overgrown this time of year.
Great trail
Good to see you out on trail That’s a great hike
Persistence indeed. Seems prudent to understand one's water sources before consuming. I was hiking through farmland and there was no filtering anything for me. I found a gas station and bought what I needed. Anyway, hoping the final stage brings some easier miles.
You should come to western pa and hike the laurel highlands hiking trail it's 70 miles long with great views
Good video 🎉
Was that hurricane Debbie threatening your hike?
No it wasn't hurricane Debbie. This hike was much earlier in the year.
The nature sounds your recording are amazing. What are you recording with?
Thanks! I always record audio on a separate device from the camera so I can get better environmental sounds, and I record in wave audio for better quality. I'm using a Zoom H1 recorder with Roland CS-10EM Binaural Microphones.
Wonderful filming. Loved your video. Thank for sharing
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi, What time of the year you made it? Good video. Thanks
Thanks! This hike was on 4th of July weekend, and it was very crowded on the trail leading up to Marcy. But once I got past the peak, then I saw very few people after that.
very nice hike
This is indeed so very heartwarming and so very wonderful and so very beautiful and so very adorable and this brings back such great memories of when I use to be a 90s kid and an early 2000s kid and I am a new subscriber as well:).
Great 1st day but man that is a lot of growth on the trail. I haven't hiked this area yet but have heard stories of Red Mo. It's crazy how that shows up on the google earth view.
Always good to see a new post from you. These vlogs are invaluable to anyone researching this trail. Water, camp, signs etc.
a masterpiece video
