Tom Whitwell of Music Thing Modular on his journey from Magazine Editor to Eurorack Designer
We sat with Tom Whitwell, formerly of MixMag, The Face and The Times, to discuss how his curiosity about electronics and modular synthesizers developed into having his own devices used by musicians all over the world.

Does anyone know if there's a update to RADIO MUSIC module coming any time soon from Tom, or Thonk, or other? Enjoying the original one I have, and thinking it'd be good to get at least one more
Tom Whitwell is always a pleasure to hear from. I love how his mind works.
Tom- you are a genius!
His voice (and modules) bring me joy.
Same same!
Always a treat to hear from Tom, thanks for the video!
Thank you!! Means a lot, DivKid! 💥
Always a joy to hear Tom chatting away!
YES!! 🙌🏼
this is delightful.
✨🌼✨
As always a delight to hear from you and your take on things…
Isn’t it!? 🙌🏼
Uuu, it's the "secret thing" 👀
can confirm that secret thing is Very Good
👀👀👀
Cool stuff, not sure how this vid got recommended to me tho. Nice person and nice sounds
"Learning music production never really does not end". Certainly got that right! So cool to highlight your associates. I think it makes a big difference putting faces to the sounds. It adds a lot of context. It's funny because I was heading over to your channel just as this dropped. I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying Bones. It's quite obvious you put an awful lot of thought and care into it. I was super impressed how I could think, oh, I could really use a crash or a roll here, and you have the perfect thing ready to slide in. You can make some amazing kits with it. Anyway, thanks again and thanks for the lovely film. You keep rocking guys.
Really appreciate that - thank you!!!
studio underneath a carpet store prop has absolutely ace acoustics for musicians lol
🔥
an inspiration to me and a uniqueness not seen often
0:23 I've never met a drummer who wasn't at least a little acoustic
Exactly!
my favourite samplists ❤❤
🙌🏼🥰🙌🏼
cool
Cool
Hahahhaa pretty typical :)) i love u.
Would it be possible to implement an option to play a random sample? Would be even better if it was possible to be controlled with MIDI, hit a button and boom, random sample. Would definitely purchase it if so, love the simplicity and minimalist design approach <3
Yes would love that too! Let's see what we can do...
@@songathletics awesome! keep up the great work. The custom skin feature is really cool too
omg i love her so much
I definitely appreciate the design of this company and they are amazing at creating drum loop packs.
🙏🏻🙏🏻☺️
Congratulations, you made a plugin literally no one needs because there are other options like AASampler or Kontakt or CR8. No effects or editing window or tuning options: that's a pass
okay, jack - thanks for checking out tho :)
I would probably consider for 10 bucks. you should at least add maybe some effects or something.
thanks for your feedback. yeah I hear you. there's lots of effects around, though - this product is about stripping back to the essentials so that there's space to play and encourage the good ideas to come out...
@@songathletics bro no one is buying this, a daw sampler has more features then this, WE ALL KNOW THIS IS FOR A QUICK BUCK. no one needs this, no one wants this. plus, theres ones out there for the SAME PRICE that have more then 6 features
basically a sampler lol
yeh!
sorry but wouldnt even download it if it would be free. $40 is a joke lol. Does it anythingbesides playing the sample???
hey thanks for your message and, nope, it just plays the sample. it's designed to be very simple on purpose. I find it relaxing and enjoyable to use. all the best!
@@songathletics I work in software development and I know it takes alot of work and I respect that. I just don't get the USP of it. If you would sell it for like $5, I wouldn't bother but the $40 is just a shock in comparison what you get for that money on the market
Sweet!
🙌🏼
40 ? seriously no... maybe a fiver... delusional
hey thanks for your feedback and for taking the time to check out 🙏🏻
Looks great. Does it have pitch detection? Many one shots are in C but if it put any one shot one the right root key so you can play and scroll even 90% of the time, that’d be huge
no but I agree and am going to look into it in future updates. thanks for checking out!
😳 "Promosm"
why would one use this over their DAW's built in options? (I'm honestly curious what's the unique selling proposition that warrants the price tag)
hey Richard and thanks for your comment! the key usp of OSS is that it singularly, and specifically, allows you to scroll up and down your one shots, such that anything you're playing/have got going via MIDI is changed immediately. I found other samplers tend to have you drag and drop, load in one at a time, double click etc; all of which breaks the workflow imo. It goes back to the synth preset selection analogue, which is about high-speed audition/inspiration. Then there's the fact that you can change the background to whatever inspires you whilst you're using it, which is real fun. hope that helps
thanks for your answer! I think when I read "It allows you to access and trigger your samples quickly and easily." I just skipped it in my brain because it sounded like marketing lingo. What you wrote about dragging and dropping makes sense (this was an aha moment in understanding for me, maybe you could highlight it in your description / video ). Although I already have XO for this specific UX issue, I would consider buying this in the future if you would add a filter/delay/reverb as an effect to it.
Yes, the Ableton browser is a very slow mess. An alternative sounds great. I also have XO, but that one is for drums. This one does indeed spark my interest.
@@songathletics Yeah, I think like a lot of people, even with that explanation, I'm left scratching my head. Especially at that price point. Genuinely interested to see what other products you bring to the table. And I appreciate that you have responded personally to a question about your product on youtube - but for the moment this one is giving off pure Teenage Engineering meets Marie Kondo vibes.
For some context, I recently purchased a sampler called Rando - which genuinely brings something new to the table for me, relative to the sampler in Ableton. While I very much appreciate the philosophy of doing a few simple things well, I feel OSS is missing the mark.
really cool, what tempo should I be using?
I love your drums! So flexible. Will definitely be grabbing this. Bombastic drums would be nice! Think John Bonham in a metal bath tub :-)) Have a nice day now 👋
We’ll see what we can do…!!
@@songathletics 👀 oooh ❤️😎❤️ I picked up that mega bundle yesterday even though I had some of it already. It is so cool. Still going through it. Excited to check out the AmBient stuff today. That OSS plugin is awesome by the way. I didn't understand it when I first heard about it but it totally rocks. Hope you had fun at Superbooth! Have a great weekend 👋
Beautiful pack!!
Thank you, Martin!!
этот контент очень сильно недооценен, лично я очень рад наткнулся на вас, ваш контент заслуживает сотни тысяч просмотров
i love this
Amazing stuff right here. Great mixing
Cool!
I have no boat in this race, but if you do a follow up, can you call it sloopy drums?
you GOT it! ⛵️
Hang on… Sloopy?
I'm glad I found this channel. I have to ask, though. What LUD are you using on your video edits? Asking for a friend, and by a friend, I mean myself. I have no friends. 😅
Thanks for finding us! This is a Presets.io LUT with some extra tweaking…🙏🏻
Odd time signatures would be great. How about 9/8 or 7/16?
Yeah nice thinking!
Thus is really good 🔥🤘
Thanksss! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Ain’t no way you only have 159 subs, this was so well made, great job man!
Appreciate it! 🙏🏻🙌🏼🙌🏼
Dope, thanks for this :)
Thanks for watching!
love this, such high qual video
Thanks! 🙏🏻 ☺️
Lovely stuff

You use the word organic, but doing all this chopping and altering of sound is farthest from being organic.
she means making it sounding like it's naturally flowing, as opposed to rigid and robotic... she doesn't mean making it sound like guitar folk and people singing kumbaya into a reel tape recorder
@@foljs5858 , yes I am aware, and the "supportive" elements like the arrangement fights naturally flowing, and it in facts makes it sound robotic. because it is chopped up making it sound robotic. DUH.
@@tgrimes175 do you also understand that this is supposed to sound organic GIVEN the context (electronic music) not organic compared to some folk band playing unplugged or a bunch of indian guys playing tablas and sitar?
@@foljs5858 , do you understand that she used ACOUSTIC guitars, PIANO, as the main featured instruments? Did you actually listen to the song????? It is heavily acoustic guitar and piano. SOOOOOO???? And again, I am talking about chopping up which makes it sound robotic. Everything you are stating fights organic idiot. There is nothing organic about chopping up and copying and pasting the same 4 measures.
lovely
All that equipment, and effort, but the end result is mediocre at best.
To each their own but you're gonna be hearing about her music and name for a long time. Her growth is astounding and she's rising fast coming from someone who only knew of her 2 years ago.
Compared to what? Some math rock wankers?
Witnessing the deconstruction of your favorite songs is so fun! Thanks for the insight, Polly, huge admirer of your work 💙
