Bugs???
This was one of the things that shocked me the most. In and around Panama City where expats are, there are very few mosquitos. Panama has done a great job of reducing the mosquito population, and most people visit bite-free!
@ Scorpio or anything else
I love your channel ❤. Specially ‘cause of your hat collection😊. Now about the mail system in Panama 🇵🇦, when I lived there my family had a PO Box at the Panamanian Post office nothing connected with the US mail they had on Post (US bases in Panama) We got all of our mail from the US , letter s, magazine etc. The mail took 1 to 2 weeks depending on where it was sent from. It was very reliable. Not sure how it is now since there are tons of Mail Boxes Etc like in Panama now.
Hi thanks for your comments! Yes, the mail system has changed since there are no longer US military bases in Panama. Their new system, although unconventional, works beautifully.
What do you believe will happen now with the USD losing value in other country?
👀
Does Amazon Prime still honor free shipping to and free returns from Panama?
You get free shipping to the mailbox service in Miami. Some, like HotBox, also offer free returns but you pay more for their service.
These are very helpful mail and shipping techniques! Thank you for the info. Love your puns, too!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching. :)
Wow! Thanks Melissa. This is a really informative video. Deserves many more views and likes. Would be great to see a similar video highlighting schools OUTSIDE of Panama City.
I’m so glad you found it helpful. Yes, this video took a LOT of work, so I appreciate the feedback. I’ll keep your request in mind for future videos.
Looking for international health insurance. Any recommendation is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Its called a Hollywood kiss and its quite common in the US in my culture
I wonder if it's to help with the cost of living as cases might be too expensive there for many people?
Yes I'm sure that's how it started. Now, it's just part of the culture.
I am looking forward to getting to Panama. If I wasn't committed to some projects until October 2025, I'd be moving by March.
You’re welcome! Contact her and your life will be easy in Panama 🎉
Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! Safe travels.
@ Thank you!
Melissa and Ricardo really giving the important info! Great episode, information and format. Your film crew gets a Bravo as well!
Thanks so much!
Good to know about land value and improvements and how it effects valueation and taxes. What qualifies as being a "resident" for the Patrimony Rebate?
You need to have residency. It's easy to apply...Ricardo's firm can help you with all of the details.
Love it
I love this channel.
Thank you for watching!
I would really like to know more as a single woman from the US how to Panama on a very small social security check. Are there jobs for women, do I have to speak Spanish
Thanks a ton. Love the content.❤
I have zero experience in either country but am trying to research for retirement in another 5 years. My impression from all the different you tuber reviews so far is that Costa Rica is fancier, has the world's most impressive bio-diversity, and is great for eco-vacations. ...but that it's infrastructure still lags behind Panama, and is overall significantly costlier. Both are developing countries, but Panama is ahead? Plus, Costa Rica really gauges expats with high import taxes. Yes, ironic coming from the U.S., where a plurality of my countrymen have just re-elected a president who vows astronomical tariffs. I have seen some reviews saying Costa Ricans just do customer service better, that Panamanians are friendly, but not so much when they are working in customer service. I wish you could speak to a concern I have about relative safety and human rights environment for lgbtq people. Since I'm gay, that certainly matters to me...but certainly also to others. Costa Rica has legal recognition of same sex marriage and some anti-descrimination laws. And Panama? All I gather is that it isn't talked about much and that Panama resoundingly rejected recent Pan-American calls for lgbtq-affirming legal status across the Americas. Rather a black mark on an otherwise welcoming image. As someone whose work is invested in expats to Panama, what light can you shed on that question? Finally, I want to travel, especially to Argentina, which has grabbed my attention as a remarkable nation, culture, and great relative cost, and Mendoza has me dreaming of retirement in a Colorado-like sunny temporate climate, close to the stunning Andes Mountains, but at a tiny fraction of the cost of living. .....but Argentina is not economically stable as Panama is, and Panama seems to win the prize for easiest path to permanent residency. Plus, its central location makes for flexible travel options. I can work on my español for 3 years or so in Panama, make a trip or two to visit Argentina, re-assess respective economic situations, especially after several years of political/economic reform efforts in Argentina und President Milei. My fingers are crossed that President-elect Trump doesn't totally wreak havoc on Panama with his ugly threats. 😵💫
They should get paid
I admire those workers. Agree. True lifesavers.
You can buy an annuity from like an insurance company and it will count for Pensionado as long as its lifetime correct?
I tipped a young man 1000 pesos in a grocery store back in my country. It was about 18 dollars US. We hooked up and became a couple. Sweet 😊!
That's quite a story! I've never heard of tipping leading to love before. 😊
Thats capitalism ---cut throat competition
That’s why delivery will take over, I’m not tipping someone to bag my groceries and I wouldn’t even let them bring it to my car, that’s crazy
That’s ridiculous, you expect someone to tip after walking around for an hour or two and spending hundreds of dollars?!? How about pay them the wage they deserve, tipping culture in America is insane. Businesses shouldn’t rely on people to pay their staffs wages when the execs have enough money to use as toilet paper.
You missed the part where she said " *in Panama* ". (In case you are geographically-challenged, that's not in the U.S.)
@ Panama is a city in Florida which is what they are referring to, you idiot lol
@ Panama is a city in Florida which is what they are referring to
@@christopherkirby2661 I had to do a quick search in Google to find that Florida does indeed have a _Panama City Beach_ which I had never heard of. Given that most Americans know of Panama, the _country_ , and Panama City, the capital of that country, what makes you think this channel is referring to the small beachside town in FL that nobody hears of? (And given the possibility of confusion, wouldn't they use the town's _full name_ instead of just saying Panama?) P.S. I don't disagree with you about tipping culture and employers making employees rely on tipping instead of paying decent wages.
@@christopherkirby2661uh no panama is country not a city in florida
The point is not the absolute cost but availability of less expensive options than US and freedom to move around if bored with one. If more and more Americans move to any one destination, then the cost differential will obviously diminish. We should thank all the folks are not relocating so that the ones that move can enjoy them at lower cost of living.
Very cool interview!
Thanks! And thanks for watching. :)
Melissa, thanks for answering my email & sending me this video! I met someone today while I was out and he has lived in Panama; and had nothing but nice things to say. I'm getting all kinds of positive signs of confirmation on Panama. Thanks again for sharing. I've subscribed. Happy Holidays! ❤☃🎄
Happy Holidays to you, too! Welcome to the channel!
If Panama is so far superior for expat retirees, why are there so many expats in Costa Rica? Is it a question of staying for further away from the madness of Canada and the United States? And the weather in Panama City is extremely hot snd humid, isn't it?
Isn't there an ongoing problem in both countries of drought and trash and pollution? And the movement of migrants through the Darien Gap? The Panama Canal is under drought and has lost 50% of its income for social services.
When you retire in Panama you get a lot of discounts on a lot of stuff.
Absolutely! Panama offers some fantastic discounts for retirees, making it a great choice for stretching your budget.
Planning a trip there for this spring. Looking forward to it. So much great content online.
You are in for a treat! Panama is a beautiful country and you're going to love it!
Such a delightful video! There is something to please every palate. The diversity & authenticity of the dishes will quench any diner's curiosity and hunger. I love that there is so much to choose from. I'm sure everything is fresh from the sea, and from farm to table. Can't wait to visit! Thanks for sharing Melissa.
Thanks for watching! I’m so glad you liked the video.
have you ever lived in costa rica?
Thank you for all the info. Would love to retire in Panama, but I would really miss my family
Love your channel and your way to deliver the message
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy the content. It means a lot!
This is great. Yes, having a sense of community is important. Besides Facebook, what are some other ways to get connected with the local expats in Panama? Any advice, tips would be greatly welcomed. Thanks.
Each major expat area has different events where you can plug into the community on a larger scale. For example, Boquete has Tuesday market, Coronado has weekly happy hours and markets, and Panama City has a lot of different groups (too many to mention here!). Also, if you live in a condo, each building will have a variety of activities. My building has pickle ball, happy hours, and special events where you can meet other residents. When you're choosing where to live, make sure that this is one of the first things you find out... how do you meet other expats? If you're outside of one of the main expat areas, it's more challenging... which means you might have a harder transition as you won't have other people to connect with and learn from.
Unless you are gay. Panama still discriminates against gay people and same sex marriage is not recognized. I'd rather pay more taxes and live in a country that treats everyone equally.
But America sure will 😂
Glad I found your channel. You really provide useful information for someone that knows not a lot about Panama. We will be visiting next February or March and would like to possibly retire there.
I'm so glad my channel is helpful. I hope you find the perfect place to retire in Panama. Let us know if we can help you find that perfect place.
I am so ready for the Panamanian lifestyle. I want to strike the right balance of immersing myself in local life yet still having some kind of connection with an expat community. I don't want to be insulated yet I still want to enjoy some of the same things and activities that I have in the US. I hope that's possible, I'm counting on it!
Yes, finding that balance is important! It's essential to tap into an area with a strong expat community. This helps you feel "at home" much quicker.
Your channel has piqued my interest in considering Panama as a destination for retirement. Besides Facebook, What are some of the other platforms, resources for connecting with expats in Panama? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Melissa. Curious to know if one can live in Panama for about $1100 per month. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.
Locals live in Panama for $600 per month (the typical wage for a worker). The typical wage for a college educated white collar worker is about $1,000 per month. So yes it's possible. You would have to live like a local--eating foods sourced from Panama, living in a modest house, etc. But it's certainly doable, as much of the country does it!
The cost HOA fees for Casa Bonita
$250 per month!
I live in Casa Bonita too! Would love to connect with you, how might we do that?
How can I find out how much the tax on bringing my car will be?
It's sooo much easier to buy a car here. This is a complicated subject that I can't answer in this limited space, but I might do a blog about it in the future. Bottom line... sell your car and use the proceeds to buy a new (used) one in Panama.
I moved to Panama and experienced 7 months of rain (April to December). Climate change is real. It rained nonstop for weeks. I lived in the Panamanian Highlands. My Panamanian friends told me it hadn't been like that since 2008. Too much rain for me.
Yuck. I'm leaning toward renting my house but keeping my garage apartment so that I can escape the rainy season if it gets bonkers.
Great information.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Melissa!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I love❤Panamenian Food. Thank you👍🥰🎉🥳
Wonderful! Thanks for watching.
tempting but after all the stuff happening here in Florida with condos I will take a pass on buying one of those. Rent? yes.
Thanks for this video. It was very interesting. I can't wait to get there again!
You're welcome! We're so glad you enjoyed it.
