Enhance Posterior pelvic tilt
This Enhance Running technique video examines posterior pelvic tilt:
- The normal degree of pelvic tilt should be 5-10 degrees anterior, measured at toe off.
- A posterior pelvic tilt is often seen along with a decreased lumbar lordosis.
Considerations:
- Shifts centre of mass posterior, “Running in the backseat”
- A posterior pelvic tilt can limit the hip extending past zero, which will cause a shift in the leg recovery pendulum, leading to overstriding and an increased load on the knees
- The posterior pelvic tilt can potentially increase load at the low back
- Not very efficient for breathing and pelvic stabilization
- Flexibility of the abdominals and hamstrings and strength of the hip flexor...

Enhance Running: Shoulders forward
Просмотров 2056 лет назад
This video examines Shoulders rolled forwards • Arm swing plays an important role in balance, protection, elastic return and breathing • When assessing arm swing from the frontal view we should see some movement medially of the arms but this should not cross the midline Considerations: • When the shoulders roll forwards, the arms then cross the midline, which in turn can increase rotational str...
Enhance Running: Egg beater recovery
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.6 лет назад
This videos examines egg beater recovery • The recovery phase of gait begins when the foot leaves the ground and completes when the foot comes back in line with the opposite leg. • This is an important phase of gait as the path that the foot travels during recovery can influence the load on lower limb, and also affect the eventual foot contact during stance. • With an egg beater recovery, inste...
Enhance Running: Poor recovery

• The recovery phase of gait begins when the foot leaves the ground and completes when the foot comes back in line with the opposite leg. • This is an important phase of gait as the path that the foot travels during recovery can influence the load on the hip and low back, and also affect the eventual foot contact during stance. • A lagging recovery is more likely to result in overstriding. • Id...
Enhance Running: Shoulders high
Просмотров 1166 лет назад
This Enhance Running technique video examines shoulders held high. • Shoulders held high can be seen on both the frontal and sagittal views. • This type of runner tends to hold their shoulders up, which can understandably place an increased stress on the neck and shoulders • These runners may complain of neck pain and/or headaches post run • With the shoulders held high, you will often addition...
Enhance Running: foot progression angle in toeing
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.6 лет назад
This video examines Foot progression angle: increased in toeing - The foot progression angle is examined from the frontal view and is the angle that the foot points during gait. To be more precise, it’s the angle made by the long axis of the foot from the heel to the 2nd metatarsal, & the line of progression of gait - Normal range is 6-10 degrees of out toeing. The cause needs to be determined,...

Enhance Running: Overstriding
Просмотров 5 тыс.6 лет назад
This video examines Overstriding. A lot of people talk about HOW the foot lands on contact ie heel strike, forefoot ect, but from the research we see it’s more important WHERE the foot lands in relation to our body. Overstriding is defined as landing with the foot contact distant from the centre of mass. Whilst you will never see someone land underneath their centre of mass, closer to it is mor...
Enhance Running: Arms abducted
Просмотров 1106 лет назад
This video examines arms abducted - Arm swing plays an important role in balance, protection, elastic return and breathing - Often seen with shoulders held high - Arms abducted out to the side can often indicate poor balance and stability - Having this increased tension in the shoulders may contribute to neck pain and headaches - If the arm swing is asymmetrical, the abducted arm is often oppos...
Enhance Running: Decreased arm swing
Просмотров 1816 лет назад
This video examines decreased arm swing • Arm swing plays an important role in balance, protection, elastic return and breathing • In normal arm swing we should see the elbow and then the wrist meet with the midline of the body • Decreased arm swing can be due to shoulder tightness • To compensate for lack of arm swing there will either be an increased compensatory rotation at the shoulders, or...
Enhance Running: Narrow step width/Crossover sign
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.6 лет назад
This week we examine narrow step width/Cross over sign • Ideally we want to have a few inches between the inside of both feet on landing. In this video here we actually see the feet landing in front of each other and actually “crossing over” • This cross over sign is more likely to occur with lower cadence, and also can be seen with pelvic drop and increased hip adduction. • It is also more lik...
Enhance running: excessive hip adduction & internal rotation
Просмотров 9 тыс.6 лет назад
This video examines Excessive hip adduction Excessive hip adduction and hip internal rotation is best seen on the frontal view, and during midstance look for the “knee window” which is absent in this runner. You can also watch the popliteal fossa for any internal rotation This hip adduction is often accompanied with excessive pelvic drop & knee valgus. It is important to assess these runners fo...
Enhance Running: Knee forward of toe “knee strategy” during midstance
Просмотров 2076 лет назад
This Enhance Running video examines the "knee strategy". The knee forward of toe or knee strategy is seen on the sagittal view during midstance. During midstance, a vertical line drawn from the front of the knee should meet with the front of the foot. Excessive ankle dorsiflexion and knee flexion will see the knee come well forward of the toes as can be seen in this video. A knee strategy is of...
Enhance Running: Arms crossing the midline
Просмотров 2556 лет назад
This week we examine armswing crossing the midline • Arm swing plays an important role in balance, protection, elastic return and breathing • When assessing arm swing we should see some movement medially of the arms but this should not cross the midline • When the arms cross the midline it increases rotational stresses in the spine and all the way down into the lower limb • Note this increased ...
Enhance Running: lack of hip extension
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.6 лет назад
Lack of hip extension • Normal to see 15-20 degrees at toe off • Usually caused by lack of hip mobility (capsular/muscular) • You will often see an increased lumbopelvic motion as the body tries to compensate. This can result in low back pain • With a lack of hip extension, the normal pendulum arc of running will be shifted forwards, resulting in a greater tendency to overstride. This is what r...

It is not excessive for the speed with its stride length and cadence; it allows duration for the airborne foot to return to a landing that is in rearward motion and a midfoot strike with slightly flexed knee and hip for weight absorption and foot pronation. An increased cadence will allow for smaller "bounce" or "recoil" or "jump" while still having sufficient time to correctly land airborne foot. Running is repeated alternate foot jumping with a forward trajectory, nothing more or less.

Thanks Markus, so if it is a mobility limitation that's causing the lack of hip extension then mobility will need to be restored. To encourage hip extension you can use what's called the "crossed extensor mechanism": concentrate on driving the opposite knee forward which will cause the other hip to go further into extension.
