Why do the bottom layers (first layers) have to be so neat, measured, and perfectly done? They're being covered up by all the layers on top. No one's going to see them!!! If that were me, I'd put on the very top layer and leave.
OMG everybody this is KABUKI makeup, not geisha. Kabuki is traditional Japanese theatre. The "sloppy" look is shironuri, it's just a style that isn't common at all. You'll find it in Harajuku only. Geisha makeup is different.
I think it's a putty or paste type concealer, I've seen something similar used in a video of a Maiko putting on her make up. Check the Immortal Geisha forums or find a similar site and ask around, I'm afraid I don't know the proper term for it.
it's also very painful, the metal is very very hot. the damp cloth is to stop the hair from burning and also steams it. essentially, do this yourself and the heat will travel up your hair to your scalp and cause etreme pain. Not to metion they also treat the hair with a wax-like substance to help the hair keep it's shape.
What is that steam thing called that they use to straighten the hair? I would love to have one for my hair...haha. It looks so much less damaging than the flat iron.
@Pixiuu This is NOT Bando Tamasaburo V. This person in this video is young, and Bando Tamasaburo V is now 72 yrs old (in 2023). This video was uploaded 14 yrs ago, so Tamasaburo would've been 58 yrs old. Also, this person's face is completely different, & height is shorter.
Oh it looks like she is going to dance "shiokumi" 汐汲. One of my senpai, she danced it this past year. To dance with the water buckets is really pretty!
Great video! The amount of layers involved is staggering, I can only imagine the skill involved in dancing in such a cumbersome costume. And I never knew they sewed the collar down! That makes so much sense, I can't believe I'd never seen it mentioned before.
just amazing! was very difficult to find a video like that. Was it a tsubushi shimada the first style and a marumage the second one?? My congratulations to katsura ten
I would feel kind of raped being dressed like that like in the min 1:52 just look the place the hand is With the hot here where i live the hole kimono will be completely sweated in 1 hour xD
You are right it it is Kabuki. This one, though, is Nihon Buyo (traditional Japanese dance) stemming from Kabuki (a combination of "ka" as song, "bu" as dance and "ki" as story). The person dressed up in this movie is a woman, I can tell. Obviously, Nihon Buyo is a kind of Kabuki "spin off" and there have been traditionally female dancers professionally doing it in Japan.
懐かしい!!

舞妓さんのお手洗時はどうするのかな
Like her arms and fingers also being painted white, nice
Do you have some video that the girl;s body being painted white please
Alguém fala português ?

i swear some people in the comments need a lesson between kabuki and geisha styles of makeup.............
The opening nearly gave me a heartattack XD
hi dear hiakomi.bow! could you please tell me what is the substance used for hiding his eyebrows? thanks a million !
To hide eyebrows, apply sticky wax called as 'BINTSUKE-ABURA'(鬢付け油), mixed honey-wax and vegetable-oil.
浅妻船の白拍子
search for kumadori, its the name of kabuki makeup, I do have a link but it won't allow me to post it
Thank you. I would have thought they would talk about the manner of doing a katsura ^^.

looks like a samuria :3
Thanks! This is the best Geisha hair do tutorial I found on RUclips. Simple and shows clearly the steps to follow.
That was amazing!!!! wish they had more videos of them making wigs

think the sewing at the collar is so that while preforming, the attire won't shift..

@yokomitz (reply to myself) Correction on the 1st line above: the 4th word I meant was "if".
すごい!の一言に尽きます。
すばらしい! 私は見ることを楽しんだ! Wonderful! I enjoyed watching!
I would feel kind of raped being dressed like that like in the min 1:52 just look the place the hand is With the hot here where i live the hole kimono will be completely sweated in 1 hour xD
that was years ago, in the 80's there was an all female kabuki group (don't know the name), and today some women perform in local kabuki theatres :P
Huh? I thought there were no female on kabuki? Only know about theater that named Takarazuka with only female actresses.
it's not kabuki
woo!!!

i don't think that person is a girl because in Kabuki all the actors are male.
This is absolutely WONDERFUL, thank you so much :-)
the thing is whether or not its for Kabuki. if it is, that would be a boy and he wouldnt have to squat.
