OPERATING A TRADITIONAL (powered) BARREL WINDLASS AND HANDLING A LARGE ANCHOR
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.Год назад
Taking a look at anchor handling techniques onbaord the pilot cutter ’Pellew’. The purpose of this video, was to record the windlass in operation, but importantly, the anchor handling work too. At a certain point, anchors become too heavy for the crew to directly man handle, and on a traditional vessel, a well thought out technique is needed. www.workingsail.co.uk

Hi, thank you for posting the windlass restoration, could you tell me where to find part one, as I cannot se it on your channel. Regards Ed.
As I remember, and it is some time ago now, we did take some video and pictures of the initial strip down, and I intended to make a Part One with those clips, but didn’t get to it in the end. My apologies!
The knowledge and technique shared in this video is deep and skilled, and although this might seem ungainly to modern sailors, it is the definition of simplicity for handling a heavy anchor and chain. It does need confident handling of course but there is little to go wrong and if it does, is easy to put right. This is very much how it was done on Thames and Dutch barges in days gone by. Well done Dave, Luke and the crew of Pellew for making this video.
Absolutely beautiful. Great Job!
Absolutely gorgeous piece of machinery! Great Job on the powering of the Tally Ho capstan. Can’t wait to see it action.
Nice job machining that new shaft.
Awesomeness Extreme. Great Job, thank you for sharing.
Awesomeness Extreme
Keith Rucker and Leo Goolden sent me here. Your work is absolutely amazing. Thank You for sharing!
That is a beautiful piece of equipment. Looking forward to seeing Tally Ho’s capstan re-powering project.
It's a shame you now have to cut it in half
Will you be putting a video up of Tally Ho's capstand?
I’m not sure. However it is likely that some video of parts being made at the workshop will be included in Leo’s videos.
@@davidwebster7179 Here is hoping you post some of it. Lot's of us have been following the windlass as it wanders around getting fixed.
Tally Ho brought me here :) Looking forward to Tally Ho capstan beeing built!
Just found you through the tally ho project , im looking forward to checking out your videos!
Welcome aboard!
Awesome! Thank you! I hope you enjoy them.
Fantastic Job! Greetings from Brasil
Hello what are the entry prices ?
Please email your vessel and ground tackle details to: sales@deepblueengineering.co.uk So that we can answer your question. Thanks, DBE
Hi, nice to see your wonderful work again, I met you a few years ago on the ILEN in Baltimore when you were fitting the wonderful windlass you built for her.
Thanks Jim. We travelled over there twice, both trips were memorable and enjoyable. A great crew of folk working on Ilen!
Thank you, David, always good to see these videos. I bet you wish you had a workshop half as big as Kurtis of Cutting edge Engineering has though.
You’re right, it is too cramped for much of the time!
It must be fun with a bit of a sea running. I'd be tempted to add a chain gypsy and a brake. I must be soft.
It's great to see this. I wish there were more detailed videos like this of the techniques of traditional boat handling. Swaying topmasts comes to mind.
Theres a few traditional sail operations on my page. Mostly square rig though, not pilot cutters. Here is swaying up a topgallantmast aboard the brig Lady Washington in California. ruclips.net/video/9Ct_ejSoC48/видео.html
Beautiful sound. I shut my eyes and feel the warmth of the sun as I'm lying on the deck waiting for my wife to finish weighing anchor 🙂
What gear ratios are available for model No.2 traditional windlass?
H K It is possible, in a single ratio arrangement, to achieve slightly over 9:1
The common ratio though is 4.33:1
Do I actually need to have a boat to buy one? :)
Fausto Menegozzo we could make a small 'desk' version for you! :-)
Actually, I was thinking about a full size one on the coffee table in front of the fireplace. Just to test new acquaintances and see if it's worth trying do deepen the relationship :) . No, seriously it's a beauty: long live your craft!...and your business, of course.
The finished result looked as if it should be displayed in a sitting room!
Great to see those old things finding a use.
Nice..
