DAW's are great, but I prefer hardware, the first music that I created was on the Korg Poly 61 synth and a Yamaha RX11 drum machine... never recorded anything , just noodling....today, I still use hardware..

What’s your advice for someone starting out without hardware, only a DAW (ableton).

I think if one feels serious about music it's better to first spend at least 1-2 months with a DAW and I'd recommend MPC Beats which is free and comes with some samples and synths if one is really serious and thinks they can easily find their way in new software or if not then some free trial version of FL Studio. I'm not a big fan of FL Studio but that step sequencer shown in this video can definitely help during the early stages. On the other hand after MPC Beats it will be easier to move to either Ableton Live or Akai's MPC hardware (or maybe stay in MPC Beats for a while or buy MPC Software which is the same but without limitations - but those limitations of 8 tracks won't really matter for a newbie). Both MPC Beats and FL Studio are pattern based which is the same for most grooveboxes so the overall workflow will be quite similar for those who feel they're likely to move to a groovebox soon. Then after a couple of months of learning a DAW one will have much more understanding which way to go - DAW or dawless and which hardware they need.

Great subject my friend, I use both DAW and DAWless (Bitwig is my DAW ) And I have a digitakt, BARP 2600, Pro 1, DrumBrute, Korg Monologue, a 303 and MC-303, and many more, even modulars. I find I tend to use the DAWless with a small recorder and then I will put it through the DAW if I feel it needs something extra. Digitakt is my go to as well as MC-303, both are amazing idea generators for any sort of rhythm or music you may be inclined to make. As always you inspire and enrich the world with your great mind and music. Thank you.

I've been playing with the Roland, and I love it!! But of course, learning comes with curves. I was so proud of the first 5 sequences I made, but... I didn't know how to write them to memory, so when I turned off the little thing, they were all lost to the astral plane!! LOL But it's okay, I've learned so many new things that the old sequences sound a bit simple - it's good to start fresh! I've also finally learned how to record with proper timing, and even use it as a midi controller, so I'm really coming along considering I've never touched anything like this before. It's because of this video that I decided to go for it, so thank you TLDJ!!
