I enjoyed your video. I'm going to try this method on a pair of men's jeans. What kind of thread/weight should I use, cotton, polyester? Thank you.
I always use 100 Poly thread. It has just enough 'give' so it doesn't break while using it. If your jeans have decorative stitching, you may want a thicker, cotton thread that will match. Have fun sewing!
@@stephaniessewingstudio Thank you!
Love this!
Thank you, these are so fun to make!
Why music instead of talking? That's useless.
Hello! I am not sure what part of the video has music instead of talking. I talked most of the time. I hope the video is not malfunctioning!
My hole is like the first pair you repaired, so I think I can do this!! I'm going to try this out thank you!!
You can do it!!!!!
I'm glad that I found this tutorial! I've been saving tshirts to make my each of my sons a blanket (they are 16 & 22). Everything about your approach resonated with me. Planning on starting them over winter break. They will get to pick out their favorite shirts from my stash ;)
I hope you have fun! They will love these blankets more and more the older they get. Happy sewing!
Beautifully done!! I am now motivated to practice.. thank you🧡
Thank you for watching! Practice, Practice, Practice. And if you need to.... Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate.
Just came across this and I definitely want to try this way.... Will be my first time making a t-shirt for myself.
You can do it! You will love it when it is done. Could you please tell me, in another comment, what frustrations you had? It would really help this video/tutorial.
@ if I have any, I would be glad to.
Great job, but if your taking off 7" and fold over 1/2" isn't that the same as the sequin dress? Shouldn't the lining be shorter than the dress maybe by 2"?
The lining should be shorter! 2" is a bit much, I usualy go 1" - 1 1/2". Your goal is to not see the lining. And, I cannot remember if the lining was the same. But you are right, the lining should be shorter.
this provided so much help thank you so much
I am so glad. Remember to thank your military for their service, and if you worked on your families uniform, thank you!!
Oh do I wish you were my neighbor... "Attitude is Everything!" = you!
I KNOW we would be besties!
Thank you for this. I enjoy hearing your thought process. I'm also interested in seeing what the Teddy bear thing is. Looking forward to seeing it.
ruclips.net/video/1iyoNVuuTHw/видео.html Hi Nancy! Here is the link to the Memory Bear I created for her. I am glad you liked hearing my thought processes, problem solving is the key to all sewing! Thanks for commenting!
You’re so good at it! Love this story!
Thank you so much, you are so kind. :)
I love this! I didn’t realize that you had a RUclips channel. I am your 1001 subscriber!!
SUSAN!! Thank you so much, you are the best!
Hi Stephanie and thank you for sharing your story @ congratulations on reaching 1000. I want you to know that I have enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos. If you ever decide to teach in person alterations, I’m there😊! Take care, Stephanie from Maryland.
Thank you so much! I see you are also a Stephanie, I have never met a Stephanie I didn't like! I really appreciate you watching, if I ever teach in-studio, I will let you know. :)
For the topper, you could sew a piece of flannel across the top panels, then you can make mitered corner.
Yes, absolutely. This is a great suggestion, and I am sure it would look really nice. I might try this!
Thank you!! I learned even more than I was expecting to - I didn't know zipper could come on a roll!
I am glad you learned a few things! Thank you for watching. :)
Word Measure is missing the a in your introduction. You are a masterclass for me. Well done. Thank you for sharing.
AGH!!! I didn't catch this. Good eye!
Is that thing that looks like a puncture mark and a surrounding little bruise on the nail of the middle finger of your left hand the result of a sewing machine accident? Yeeouch!!
Honestly, I cannot remember! I know my nail was damaged, but I cannot remember how. I have never put a needle through my nail, so it had to be something else. Thanks for the sympathy, though. My hands are always in bandaids!
Where do you buy your vinyl?
I do have a shop in town that carries vinyl, and I buy from her sometimes. But, I like Fabric Warehouse Direct. Sometimes suppliers want to ship it on a roll, which is necessary but expensive. If they fold it, sometimes the folds stay.
Could you tell me what settings I need to have my machine on to sew the T-shirts?
I sew this blanket on Hope, which is a Singer 403A from 1957. So her settings are just, long stitch with a ball point needle. But, honestly, the ball point needle only helps a little. If I were to do this on my Opal Viking, I would put the setting on Stretch heavy, with a 4.5 length stitch. I hope this helps!
3 layers sewed together=quilt; not blanket. You quilted it, you are a quilter. My sister wants a blanket that isn't quilted, your video wasn't much help.
I thought a blanket was not quilted. After looking at definitions, you are right. But in my brain, doing this on a machine is not quilting. I imagine my grandma with a needle and quilting frame, going 8 stitches per inch. I have made a blanket like this, without batting, just flannel, for a summer throw. But, I am still not sure if that would be a blanket or a quilt, because I would still sew them together.
I am ready to take on this project. It will have to wait until I get back from my weekend trip. Thank you so much!
You can do it! Have a good trip!
What seam allowance are you using?
I am using 1/2 " because it is easy to add up. But, lots of times I need to use less or more to make it fit.
great video! thank you!
Thank you for watching! I appreciate you!
I've made 2 t-shirt blankets, but I like your design so much better and I noticed you didn't iron on stiffener sheets on the back of each shirt before cutting. Wow! I want to make xl twin blanket for our camper beds. Could you share your words of wisdom what size block pattern I/you would use? I see you are using a much larger pattern. (33x30..a much larger blanket) Your work is beautiful. Thank you for any help. I know you must be so busy. Smiles, Cely in Cocoa Beach, FL (retired teacher) PS Not a quilter...haha
Hi Cely! I am so glad you like my design, it works well for me! If I were to make an XL twin, I would definitely add to the width. The problem you will run into, is that most t-shirts have a logo or design 14" - 18" wide. That is why a 33" wide pattern works so well. Perhaps an extra row of t-shirts down the middle? Think creatively about how to make it work. Problem solve, Cely, you can do it!
Love to see your through process and troubleshooting. Thanks for sharing! I’m trying to sew up a favorite shirt❤
Thank you! Problem solving is the best skill to have when sewing. I try to leave in my mistakes, so you can problem solve with me. Thanks for watching!
What pattern did you use. Thanks how big is the bear.
Hello! This is a 28" bear, and I use my own pattern. It is big enough to hug and love! I made my own pattern, because I couldn't find a good one to use. It is for sale on my website. www.stephaniessewingstudio.com/single-project

Thank you so much!!
Love this story and history of your machine. I’m a big fan of vintage machines. It’s nice to see them in use in a video. Most of the RUclips videos are about fixing them up which is great but I like to also see them in real life use. Thanks for sharing. I just subscribed. I hope to see more. ❤
Thank you so much. I also love vintage machines, I always look for them at Goodwill. I have two spare machines just like Hope in my storage room. They may look like Hope, but they just aren't. Thank you for subscribing!
Love watching that blind hem machine. I’ve seen and used a lot of machines but have never seen one of those in action. Really cool. 😀❤
Thank you! She is truly vintage, and I love her. I have never made her go as fast as she can go. I literally use my big toe to barely press the pedal. Thanks for watching!
My mother still has her Singer 301 from 1955. It will sew through anything, so she wouldn't let me touch it until I was a teenager and took lessons at the Singer store in the mall (late 1970s). She had tried to teach my older sister to sew and it did not end well LOL When sewing during the summer, I would sometimes call my mom at work and ask her question about what a pattern said.
You are another version of me! But, my Mom just let me learn on my own, I never took a lesson. Although, I did try to tell my sewing teacher in Jr. High how to sew.
@@stephaniessewingstudio My mother's sewing machine has one speed - FAST. She was convinced I would sew through my fingers. I have early memories of sitting and watching her cut out fabric and sew.
Sewing is more than a skill, its love.
It is a very good model. I use vintage and antique machines all the time.
You get it. :)
Loved hearing your, and your machine's, story. I have a Singer 500, which came after the 400 series. They are very similar machines. Two things I want to mention, both of which you may already know. To help get over those thick denim seams, there is a product called the Hump Jumper. It's a plastic block that you put under the back of the sewing foot to raise the foot to the level of the seam. Of course, you can use homemade items to replicate the Jumper, like a piece of heavy felt, folded to the thickness of the seam. You mentioned you use your other machine to make buttonholes. You can still find buttonhole attachments for Slant machines like ours on eBay and other sites. I have one for my machine and just love using it. It is restricted to only 5 sizes of buttonholes, but it does a great job sewing those.
I never heard of a Hump Jumper! I am going to look for one. And, I have a buttonhole attachment somewhere in my bins, I am going to get it out to try it. Thank you for these suggestions!
Im subscriber 888!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
That means you are completely awesome! Thank you!
This was very helpful. Thank You
I am so glad I could be of help!
I just wish I had your talent and commitment, thank you for sharing. Chris
I don't know why I love what I do , but I love it! Thank you!
What type of needle do u use in ur machine
I love size 90. If the needle is too thick (size 100) it makes a sound I don't like when it goes through the layers. :/
Can you use sweatshirts as well?
Absolutely! I have used hoodies, sweat pants, dresses, even socks!
hello very beautiful vintage sewing machine please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal how its used to sew please kindly let me know ok?thank you very much 😊
Hello! This particular machine has a knee pedal. The cabinet comes with a place to put it, otherwise you would have to use it as a foot pedal. I plan to do a video about this machine soon. Thanks!
hello very beautiful videos lady seamstress very beautiful sewing machine please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal how its used to sew please kindly reply back ok ?thank you very much 😊
Hello! I actually have a knee operating machine pictured here. Any pedal needs practice. You can do it!
If I were wanting to achieve a lighter weight blanket (hello, Southern AZ 🥵), would it work to do this exact thing, but without the batting?
Yes! I think that would work better when you stitch to bind the layers together. It will be thinner and easier to fit under the arm of your sewing machine.
I am glad you use the back of the shirt as well. So many people use stabilizer and I think the extra layer gives it stability as well as additional warmth. Would a walking foot help with all those layers? Well done.
I have tried to use a walking foot when sewing the layers together. My old Singer walking foot kept coming apart and slowing me down substantially. If you have a different machine with a walking foot, you should try it. In theory it should work, but the thickness may prevent it from working well. I would love to hear back from you with your machine make and model, and let me know if it works!
Very nice instructions. Came right at a perfect time. I have a client who needs her jeans taken in about an inch. My old Bernina should be able to handle it almost as well as your beautiful Singer. I smile every time I see your machine as I reminisce watching my mom sew on hers. Sad news, my niece who inherited it said that the motor burned up. I told her to go get a new motor and it will last another generation.
I wish I had a Bernina, they are such good machines. I have a couple of Viking Husqvarna and I really like them as well. Thanks for sharing sweet memories!
@@stephaniessewingstudio What Bernina model do you have your eye on? Vintage or new. I have several vintage machines. 830, 930, 1006, 1030. All mechanical machines with very strong motors. Next time you are in DC area, I would love to have you visit and pick one up. My gift to you..
That is a very generous offer! I have only seen my friend use one briefly, but she loves hers. I haven't even looked at the models, now that you are offering I will take a look. So kind! I will let you know if I get down that way. Its only 4 hours!
😂I have to hem 8 inches on my daughter’s dress! Dress has a two or 3 inch stretchy band incorporated in the hem not sure if I should use it or just ditch it.
I would ditch it. Too much trouble, not only will nobody be able to tell, but it won't make a different in the hem.
I see this was filmed 5 years ago. I hope you have acquired a pair of duck bill or knife edge applique scissors by now. I love mine when trimming down rolled hems. 😊
I have since acquired a duck bill pair of scissors, how did you know! But, the finger holes are so small it hurts my hands. So, my favorite scissors are my blunt-end Ginghers. My my assistant uses them all the time.
I just mailed a box full of completed alterations to a client. I used to live closer to her but moved away and she refuses to let me go 😊. I altered a couple of shirts similar to your example. Best advice you gave is to work on one sleeve at a time. So easy to get confused.
You get it! Thanks for watching!
The installation video was fine but how did you make a pattern in order to make covers? Any videos on how to make a slip cover or how to measure to make a first draft and refine fit
I took it apart, and made a pattern by putting the pieces on paper. Good question!
Any chance I could get a copy of the template. For my granddaughter’s wedding?
There is a pattern for sale on my website. Good luck, you can do it! www.stephaniessewingstudio.com/
