    I appreciate your video; however, I'm having some difficulty comprehending your message. If I've understood correctly, the cable's total weight is 1.8 kilograms, with 880 grams attributed to the copper component."

    Why no SPD? Also I am guessing AC type RCD's? Thank god SPD's are now without question mandatory along with type A RCD's in Amendment 2... Also upgrading a board cause there are no spare ways and they you seem to have left no spare ways... I see screwfix are having a sale on those BG boards.. Probably cause they barely complied with 18th edition and with amendment 2 they really don't comply at all so getting rid of stock.. Put in a decent Hager rcbo board every time..

    • @tomorichard
      @tomorichard 2 года назад

      Spd’s are still in no way mandatory if a customers wants to opt out and take responsibility for the damage that may occur they can.

    • @steve11211
      @steve11211 2 года назад

      @@tomorichard currently SPD's are required unless a risk assessment is done, that risk assessment is pretty much impossible to do (The reason it was removed), alternatively yes the current regs and amendment 2 say if the customer signs to take responsibility and say any financial loss is acceptable and they fully understand the risks.... This would then probably also invalidate any insurance claim so if you are explaining it properly only an idiot would sign or for very specific reasons (note cost should not be a reason), so for domestic properties it is basically mandatory... If you don't think SPD's are mandatory you need to have a discussion with your CPS.. (Unless you dont have one in which case carry on cowboy)..

    • @tomorichard
      @tomorichard 2 года назад

      @@steve11211 fantastic response. In no way a cowboy just stating the latest edition to the regs. Not every installation is a domestic dwelling where a dirt cheap fusebox board with dubious spd installed will suffice “regs”. Some installs are merely lighting schemes within a store shed that generally do not warrant over voltage protection. It’s easy for the likes you yourself to jump of the band waggon of “cowboy” but I assume you think of every situation a domestic dwelling where the cost of a spd is negligible, large scale commercial installations not so much. I do not appreciate the hostile remarks and would like to Suggest a less condescending response in future.

    • @steve11211
      @steve11211 2 года назад

      @@tomorichard I meant no disrespect and yes as the video was for a residential property I presumed we were talking residential.. (Although most commercial properties you would also now fit an SPD, it might actually be more important given the value of equipment) The problem is the regs allow if the customer requests to say they understand the risks and are willing to take the financial hit, this should not be done purely on cost, as soon as someone says an SPD is not needed you know its a cowboy electrician.. I bet this guy has done no risk assessment or even properly explained to the customer why one is needed and has not got it in writing to say the customer has refused... In reality BG is the cheapest consumer unit from screwfix, how do you know the incoming fuse is only 60A so the 63A type AC RCD is ok? they don't even look, its just cheap so they can undercut those of us trying to install consumer units to the regulations.. Its very rare you would have just lighting in a store shed in a separate consumer unit, what would be the point?

    • @tomorichard
      @tomorichard 2 года назад

      @@steve11211 I totally understand the frustration of people with half a idea fitting bargain basement rubbish with no idea as to what they are fitting. The movement towards A type rcds is indeed a good one. However I can’t say that I have ever come across a blinded AC type rcd but the logic makes sense. We frequently work in a dock yard with many many building utilised as storage and the electrical manager point blank refused to have arresters installed as he didn’t believe the point of it. Due to the yard having a dedicated 11kva transformer the CRL calculation was fairly straight forward and came out as non required. the cascading of SPD’s gets very complicated within large commercial installations and sticking a 50quid surge branded arrester in would do little to nothing in this situation. It requires a proper design. Appreciate your passion for the trade. We need more of it I think 👍

    Just out of curiosity, how did you isolate that CU ? I didn’t see a DNO cutout or DP isolator? I’am guessing it is fed from a main CU some were else in the property? . Or the DNO incomer and cutout and meter is in another part of the building?.

    • @tosonselectrical
      @tosonselectrical 2 года назад

      The supplier's equipment(in the hallway) are just back to back with the CU. The tails are barely a meter long.

      @@tosonselectrical that’s an unusual one.

  • @seandempsey7351
    @seandempsey7351 2 года назад

    What was your reason for changing the CU ? There was nothing wrong with it, have you read the the health and safety executive’s note in BS7671 ? Secondly never turn the main switch off on full load , always turn off the MCBs first then turn off the RCDs then turn off the main switch. The CU was a metal clad split load with two RCDs there was no signs of damage or overheating or exposed conductive parts. So unless you’re test readings don’t conform to BS7671 there was no reason to upgrade it. Other than to charge an extra £450 - £ 600 for the new CU Totally unefficall .

    • @tosonselectrical
      @tosonselectrical 2 года назад

      Thank you Sean for watching and for your observations, questions and assumptions. The CU went from a 10way to a 13way to accommodate new circuits to supply a garage unit fed off the armoured cable and also an additional ring final circuit for the new extension on the property plus a future point in front of house for car charging. The customer wanted the CU recessed in a cupboard so the old one had to come out anyway. I would be more concerned not to turn ON on full load. I don't think I stated the price of the job, did I? 😄Thanks again.
