I think the cup is shaped that way to give you less volume than a standard drink that size whilst still being able to use the standard lid.

Try making maple whipped cream for your next batch of waffles instead of butter and syrup. (make whipped cream, fold in some maple syrup to taste [not breakfast syrup, the consistency is wrong for it])
