great chats and insights 👍👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Simon is our best ambassador for Mountain biking in Tasmania, so glad you could have him on as a guest !
it was a pleasure to have him on the show.
Hi All, I ended up buying the Stump 15 Pro model, it's not been without its challenges and I had to send the shock back to Fox as it was making a lot of noise. It seems that it needs more development, might be worth waiting for the next generation.
I’d vote Simon French for PM. All class.
Ain't gonna argue!
Great interview, thank you Simon for the in detail answers. Massive to pull off such a great venue down the bottom of Aus.
Glad you enjoyed it. He's put in some serious graft to get this point hasn't he!
Simon is so on the money with kids and teaching them about risk and how to make those decisions. So many kids are kept in cotton wool by their parents and it's not turning out well.
I agree. Being in that position at the moment, I find it so hard to try not to wrap them in cotton wool, but I guess being aware of that is the first step to doing a better job of it.
Who's your money on for the Hardline Tasmania win this weekend?
I want it to be Bernard.
Ronan
Jackson probably.
@@vlbz good call, but could Asa deliver?
@ he's certainly got form!
of course we'll see Rachel win on the belt-drive. 1st stage.😅
You think Rach will make the comeback for this prize?
Totally agree on what you say about balancing your passion/profession, Fabio. It’s easy to get burnt out or even hit overtraining if you ride all day everyday (or whatever your priority is) and don’t mix it. It’s the best thing for your body and mind to regularly focus on other things - might be a different sport, office work or just relaxing for a day or two. 🙌🏽
Everyone needs some 'Downtime' ha ha
One Fabio's routine I've noticed - maybe not every day but he spends awful lot of time with his friends. I think that's the best thing you can do to stay happy and sane and lead the life you'll be proud of. Even when your RUclips channel doesn't pick up or whatever goal you set for your self, at the end of the day, friends and happy memories stay. Thank you for this honest interview! Even though I already knew Fabio was the nicest and down to earth guy. Btw. it was funny how he pronounced Arnold Schwarzenegger's name with Austrian pronunciation. Almost. And lastly, I love my Crankbrothers Stamp pedals, but how come I don't ride like Fabio? 😞
That's very true, he does surround himself with good people. Glad you liked the interview. I also have Stamps and can't rife like Fabio 🤣
Awesome as always Chris! Super interesting chat! I forget how many times me and my lad have watched Fabulous escape 2!
He’s super interesting isn’t he. Very different in the MTB world.
cheers for having me 👊
It was an absolute pleasure Fabio!
Great episode! Would be really cool to have both Danny hart and reece Wilson on the podcast in the build up to the season starting, feel they would both be interesting due to big changes for both of them
I'm with you on that, they both have invites, let's see...
@ will be keeping my eyes peeled!
Whats revolutionary about them?
this guy! ❤ Always a good listen.
What a guy, really interesting and thinks differently!
Nice Podcast 😊
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
🤘🤘🤘
What's your favourite Fabio video so far? For me it's the Streif, which we chat about in this episode. INSANE!!
Sick Series!
@@user-hp5rj2ue9y great work!
@@downtimepodcast Sick Series #38, the original 'Streif' video... with no spikes!
Yes Anna!! So stoked for you
You need to do another run of those caps, mate. I missed them 1st time round. My hoodie is still my fave hoodie - a cap drop might persuade me to grab another hoodie while I'm in the shop 😉
@@Sqwelch I’d love to, but the logistics don’t work in the current setup. I had a printed option that I got samples for, but then it got taken off the table 😭
@downtimepodcast That's a shame Chris, I'd love a couple of those caps. Fingers crossed for the future... Love your work btw
@@Sqwelch thanks mate. I've got an option on SnapBack caps, but they'd probably end up costing £35, what do you think?
@@downtimepodcast I'd buy some in different colours. I appreciate the quality and ethical sourcing you choose, so I don't think £35 is too much. But, man, I really 💙 those camper caps 🥲
@@Sqwelch thanks man. Yeah they are good. I could maybe get a small batch made and find a way to distribute that's separate to the other merch. I'll see what's possible.
for sure Gearboxes will dominate DH Racing, rearmags are obsolete Bullshxt
😂😂
Will we see a gearbox/belt-driven bike on the top step this season and if so, who do you think the rider will be?
Alan's insight into professional DH racing is second to none ! This was fantastic insight to what lies in store to what will be a drastically different 2025 season..
Glad you enjoyed it. Alan knows his stuff eh!
So if the New Zealand race was a test it was a failure it appears. Only 4 elite female riders it appears. All junior female riders. In a country where training can occur this time of the year.
The biggest shame for me is the lack of coverage of that race, it would be nice to see a bit more from it.
AON is the team I’m looking forward to seeing most this year, bikes look so incredibly planted and quiet
I don't think you're alone mate, there are going to be a lot of eyes on that team for sure!
Always good listening to what Milway has to say. I feel like the Commencal/Mucoff team is what happens when Max has a few too many red wines of an evening and goes internet shopping.
Ha, that is funny as... and probably bang on!
Awesome episode Chris 👍🏻 You guys covered exactly what we want to hear. Alan is always a top bloke and your research and production is first class 👌 Thanks, and keep up the great work mate. (new hoodie ordered too 😬)
Thanks Steve, that was the plan... and you legent, thanks for the support!
Gear boxes and belt drives on production bikes are unnecessary. Too heavy, too expensive and if belt drives are so great, then it wouldn’t need to be enclosed in a case. Money talks but if that £100k wasn’t available then belt drives wouldn’t be a big thing? Great on single speed only
maybe the teams chasing the money drives the tech forwards and the evolution includes things becoming lighter and maybe ultimately even cheaper... let's see
I disagree, to design develop and manufacture a gearbox bike exceeds the prize money anyway. Having just started riding a zerode g3 I can say the expense is negligible, the weight is in the right place and there are real world benefits to a belt and a lighter real wheel /unsprung weight. Good video of the Atherton team comparing thier gearbox and regular bikes doing chase laps also.
@@jamesrouse1964 great to hear the flip side here
I’d like to see a gearbox and belt drive on a few e-bikes and no it’s not called a motorcycle!
@@gingerb36 I'd agree, a great fit on an ebike and combine the motor with the gearbox
Desperately hoping for the full 360 panoramic of Martin in a speedsuit, now. 😂
Ha, start the campaign now.
the future of USA DH looks bright! nice work Anna!
I think so too!
Awesome episode! You couldn't have picked a better guest to break down this subject.
thanks Rob, glad you appreciate it
Only change I want to hear about is in the commentary booth
😂
@downtimepodcast You should have asked what pedals Peter was using before these were on production once he said "I'm a clip guy" since clearly he was not on OneUp flat pedals :)
Good question!
Shame you did not touch on Pivots program. Probably the funnest team to follow on the circuit.
If I had any clarify on what their team line up was going to be for 2025 then we would have, but I’ve not even managed to find any particularly solid rumours. Do you know who’s riding for them?
@@downtimepodcast All I know is that the Jewett brothers are gone to Giant. Was hoping for more insights from you. Great team coverage by the way.
@ yeah, I've heard literally nothing about who's going to be on Pivot, which seems kinda strange. I'm interested to see what happens with the team this year.
Love my Stumpy 15 but I have 2 complaints. 1) The bottom bracket is so low that I am getting way more pedal strikes than I was with my old bike. It has high and low bb height setting but it's more like low and extra low. 2) My bike has a horrible clunk when going over roots, rocks, drops etc. I'm pretty sure it's the derailleur (SRAM GX AXS T-Type). I have shown the shop and they were very helpful with trying to fix the problem but they have not found a solution. I have an S5 and apparently they have had some other complaints from other people on S5/S6 but not the smaller frames so it might be something to do with the longer chainstay/chain? It's really annoying because the bike is so refined and quiet but just clunk-clunk-clunk down the roots and rocks. To be clear, it is not chain slap, it is a loud clunk. I have many videos on my channel that show it clearly. Here are 2 below that are time stamped so you can hear the sound. ruclips.net/video/5K08F_1SyaI/видео.htmlsi=iN4jumvDpIOuPXi3&t=50 ruclips.net/video/1qhOCElX1Ds/видео.htmlsi=H6FWog-CiA7sChTr&t=52
If the belt is a problem, couldn't the gearboxes be run with regular chains? I mean that's the exciting tech, not the belts.
Yes, I'm sure that would be feasible and could be a safer option for when it's muddy. It will be fun to watch the technology evolve this season.
Excited to see how Reece & Aon do, especially interested to see what Hattie can do.
Agreed, that’s a cool project and Hattie focussing on DH will be really interesting.
Another great blog/vlog. Well worth the viewing. Thanks forsharing. Only ever see Alan from a distance when we have been to races. Never met him, but heard loads and it would be great to get the knowledge he has with regards getting the best out of souls, especially the DH and enduro riders.
Thanks, glad you're enjoying it. We have some older audio only episodes with Alan where we go a bit more into rider performance. Head over to my website and you'll find them there.
@@downtimepodcast Thank you

So which team are you most excited to follow this season???
All the belt drive teams. So interesting to see that development
@@thestrengthfactory. 100% Can't wait to see if they really can bring some decent advantages. Exciting stuff.
Always the one with Vergier, but a whole bunch of teams for different reasons.
@ ha, which other ones are you rooting for?
No one does it like BK Sports.
Amazing listen and watch this one great to see Josh been so open and honest about things and looking so happy with life! Would be great to see him between the tape again though!
I totally agree, he just oozes stoke, it's infectious.!
New bike!? Mmm ...?? Back to the Enduro??
Great conversation, super interesting. I've clips on my gravel bike, and did tip over a lot, so a little scared to try them on the MTB - but, I would like to give them a go at some point, I heard one of the female DH riders saying it gives far more adjustability as you can pivot on the balls of your feet versus, somewhat ironically, being stuck to a flat pedal. Due to declining quality in Five Tens I switched to Fox Unions and they have some adjustment but still grip.
I've been using the Look En-Rage pedals for a couple of years after using the Mallet DH for a few years but never really getting along with them. Supply chain issues prevented me from getting the En-Gage's with spikes, but I wish my Look pedals had a larger platform, so I think I'm going to give these a go.
I haven't use those pedals, so can't compare, but I do like the platform size on these pedals.
Oh man I'm buying these this week.
Nice one, but what colour?? Let me know how you get on with them.
@@downtimepodcast Black always, looking forward to this described contact vs the Shimano Saints. The Saints aren't bad by any stretch, curious if I'll pedal strike less though.
@ nice, black was my choice too!
Ugh, 1 hour video to go over some pedals? That's fine for some, but maybe make a short that sums it up in 30 seconds? I guess I can also toss this link into NotebookLM and have it make a 2min podcast instead. 🤷♂
New clips, thinnest in the world, trail pedal weight, DH pedal platform sized, available now. There you go, saved you 25 seconds.
@@downtimepodcast LOL, fair play! 👍 Maybe add: less unwanted play, same expected float.
@@Chuckolicious ha, if you're happy with those extra 2 seconds then that's all good with me!
