How to Buy A Used Motorcycle
In this video, I offer some recommendations for how to buy a used motorcycle.
Buying a used motorcycle shouldn't feel overwhelming. If it does, reference these tips for buying a used dirt bike.
For me, it's a process. A method. I deploy this used motorcycle checklist every time.
Is it perfect? Probably not. Did I forget to cover a few things? Most likely. Ultimately, the point is to have a plan, an idea of what you want, and know what to look for.
Make sure you inspect the tires, wheels and brakes. Take notice of excessive wear on the engine cases and frame. Check for oil and other fluid leaks. Are the rims bent? Does the bike start?
Before you make the offer, recall any damaged or wear it...

KLX 300 | Is This the Perfect Beginner Dual Sport?
Просмотров 32 тыс.3 года назад
The 2021 KLX 300 might be the perfect beginner dual sport motorcycle. #klx300 #2021klx300 Overall, this fuel-injected thumper has a relatively low seat-height, capable off-road suspension, and a reasonable price tag ($5599). There was a lot of hype built around Kawasaki's new vehicle launch event earlier this week. Some of you were expecting a KLR 650 replacement. Others, like myself, were expe...
Adventure Bike Riding is Easy if You Do This

While others might struggle with the size of the bike, wavering confidence or a lack of experience. It can be a steep learning curve. What if there was a better way to become a well-rounded adv rider? Actually, there is. Hop on a dirt bike or a dual sport motorcycle ...
KTM 790 Adventure R Review

I was overdue for a KTM 790 Adventure R Review. #ktm790 #ktm890 However, after 18 months and thousands of miles, I'm happy to share my assessment of this machine. Has the KTM 790 been flawless? Of course not. There are a handful of well-documented issues with this adv bike. But do the pros outweigh the cons? I suppose you'll have to watch in order to get my take. Regardless, the 790 Adventure R...

Could you benefit from adventure rider training? Drop a comment below, please. #adventureridertraining #advrider It's hard to say whether or not an individual might benefit from some coaching. So, I put together a video to help everyone better understand their personal need (if any). Ideally, you'd set-off confidently for each and every motorcycle adventure. However, that's not always the case ...

That crossing is no joke, nice job getting through upright lol. And that was before someone went through and removed a lot of the big rocks
Is it a how to add Google maps to GPX or a tour? How about sticking to the how to.
Thanks for the great video. I truly appreciate it. I have a Garmin Zumo 595 and I've tried Harley Davidson Ride Planner, it works great on my cell phone but not on my Garmin. It only gives straight lines from point to point. I tried Rever, created a route and when I loaded it into Basecamp it worked well but then when I transferred it my Garmin it changed about 50% of my created route. I like the layout of Rever because they have "Butler Motorcycle Maps" integrated into their platform as well as various BDR routes. How can I use Butler or know the BDR or integrate it with google maps? Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your informations
Ouch!
Jesus bike
Is it better to buy a used 790 R with some farkles and save $4-5K or a new 2023 890 R if you have been riding street for many years and want to start learning off road with ~30% riding off-road? Do the 890 R improvements make learning off road any easier for a noob? Dropping a used bike certainly seems more appealing. lol I will keep my big bike for 2up and the 790/890 for 30 min to 3 hour asphalt rides to arrive at BDRs.
Please make a video on animation of gpx route
will this gpx file work in the Harley GTS
If you can upload GPX files to it for nav then yes it will work fine.
@@crushingmiles It doesn't save as a complete ride. It goes into saved as individual destinations on my GTS ?
Thanks so much for putting this up! you have made my life so much easier when route planning. Best, Jonathan
Just trying to help!
I made my route in Google Maps. Used that website you suggested to export to GPX. I uploaded it to my Garmin and the route that the Garmin would take me is NOT the same.
I love the look of your trails. Where are you riding, in general?
I smash the guts out of my 2020 Rally. The lower seat from Seat Concepts helps me out a pile. I have also done a pile of mods that hop my bike up quite a bit from stock. I ride heavy enduro and film for YouTiube under Dirt Chimps. Nice video. It would be fun to chat sometime! Cheers!
Awesome to hear man! Would love to chat sometime also 👍
I would love the R version but is it any good for road touring and KTM reliability worry’s me a bit
I enjoy it on the pavement as well. I have had no reliability issues 790 or 890.
Where in Oregon are you! These road/trails look fun!
All over, Idaho too. Various locations 👍
Great video. How many hours did you put in this day?
If my memory serves me correct, 9 hours. 6AM departure with a 3PM arrival in Darby.
@@crushingmiles Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Planning a trip in August and planning out alternative day by day distances.
@@brianwaggoner3138 have fun out there!
As of Feb 21, 2022, this is working.
KTM 890 AR is just not reliable enough for you to take it on a long road trip...it's a dirt bike in a street bike form...constantly breaking down and constantly being worked on...but it does everything you ask for...which is exact reason why I am getting it :D :D
Did you buy the 890?
You bet. And I’m loving it.
@@crushingmiles I brought mine home last Wednesday and it’s killing me that I can’t ride it. Too much snow
@@PapaDougsAdventures01 that has happened to me before in the past. Nothing as painful as staring at a fresh bike over the winter. But it’s a good time to perform some mods/upgrades and get it ready for favorable weather 👍
Thanks! Here are some tips: The start and end points can't be the same. If making a loop, use slightly different points to start and end the route. Use up to ten waypoints to create the route as shown in the video. Do not use the dots on the Google Map to move the routes as any over ten won't be used when the route is converted to GPX and the route will be wherever Google Maps would take you for the shortest distance. If you need more than ten waypoints to force Google Maps to select the roads you want, create the route in segments of ten waypoints and export each to a separate GPX file.
It's amazing when I'm watching a video like this and think to myself that the terrain looks familiar; and then you say you're in Bend. Of course. I've been trying to buy a T7 but can't find one. If I can't snag a T7 by Spring 22 I guess I'll be riding Orange next Summer. That's what brought me here, researching the 890. Maybe I'll come take a class from you when I'm on a better bike than my RE Himalayan, which by the way has seen some BDR.
Awesome Rod! Don’t think you can go wrong with either bike!
Been riding on and off for 50 years. The 890 r is the best I've rode.. It's a ripper. Great video
790 rally and it stays in the garage. Not because finance but i´w found the sweet spot for my riding it in where im just having fun. Stering damper neded.
Picked up an 890 myself.
Lots of complaints about this not working; however, I just tried it and it worked perfect. After it converted the map to a GPX, I dropped it into my Rever maps and it popped right up.. I hope everyone understands that once it is converted into a .GPX file, you have to load it into a GPS or a program that reads GPX files. Anyway, thanks for posting this, it helped a lot. UPDATE: nope, I was wrong, MapstoGPX is definitely not working. Everything seemed to work fine, until I attempted to load it on my bike. It would not load. I used GPS Visualizer and it worked fine.
I’ll take a look at it.
Excellent video, apart from the distracting background music.
Sorry about that.
Great video - rode the IDBDR at end of Sept 2020 - ate it riding through the creek crossing but picked the bike up quickly without any water intrusion. What time of year did you ride it? How did you get all the details about the ride - on the BDR website? Did Section 6 of the ORBDR in July - hoping to get on the WABDR in September. Ride on brother!!
The first time I rode Idaho was the end of August. Every time thereafter I've ridden it in September. I did get most of my info from the BDR website and their videos. Be safe in WA bud and thanks for the support.
I get the error "Unable to determine the end of the embedded google directions data". I thought maybe it was something to do with the long route I had chosen, so I tried a short route with just a few waypoints and got the same error. Seems that as of 2021 mapstogpx.com may no longer be working.
I contacted the developer, who replied within a day or two to say the issue was fixed, hurrah!
Mapstogpx no longer works. It would be in the interest of visitors to remove this so as not to waste any more visitors time. below is result FATAL ERROR Unable to determine the end of the embedded google directions data Please go back and check your Maps link and retry, if this error persists then please check again in a few hours
the site maps to gpx is not working...
Ride on!!
Will do!
Mapstogpx doesn't work. I don't know if this is temporary.
I'm getting the 890 r today. I've been reading a Africa twin for a year and it's not that great on small 2 track or single track. I'm hoping this ktm will be the answer.
Congrats!
Well I've had my 890 r since late yesterday afternoon and have over 400 miles. It's the perfect bike
@@erickschmidt3828 I’m glad you’re enjoying it 👍
Rode 890R yesterday. Price increase is a lot. Upgrades make sense verse the price. I’ll be keeping my 790R
I’m seeing bike shops jack the prices up on everything-really frustrating 🤢
Just bought one today. Plan on riding it through Central America mine is stock right now plenty of mods to do to it and prep before I go looking at next year. 790 is a great bike as well. Looking forward to my trip going as far down as Colombia. Just subscribed looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Oh my trip will start from the Uk shipping bike to Florida 👍🌴😎
Envious! Have fun on your trip. More videos dropping regularly in just a few weeks!
I'm selling my xr650l, 2005 KTM 950 Adventure and 2007 990 Adventure, for I just bought the last 2021 KTM 890 ADVENTURE R in stock from Carter Powersports here in Las Vegas, was still in the box. Picking it up Tuesday! 🏍️💥🔥🔥🔥
I have the 690 enduro r which isn't really and adventure bike..i would love the 890 r but would also like to keep my 690..
Best of both worlds 👍
What's your website address? I'd like to head up there this summer for one of the BDR rides. 👍
hi handsome. i love and enjoy your time, video and thoughts. great video. great bike. my thought is the more transistors a motorcycle has the $$$$ pricer it becomes.goodluck.
I'm a seasoned rider looking to ride again after being away from the sport for 27+ years. You're right in what you said, that this bike would be great for beginners as well as seasoned riders. I have a lot of offroad experience. My riding now will be fairly tame compared to what it used to be, but I'm looking for a bike to get around town and also take on some easy offroad trails. This bike (or the Honda CRF) fits the bill perfectly. It is lightweight, will handle well, and has enough power for the intended use of the bike. I'm also glad you mentioned that this engine has been around a long time. I didn't know that but it reassures me that it will be reliable. My dealer hardly has any bikes now due to covid disruption of the supply chain. It will probably be months before he can get either the KLX or the CRF300, but I will get whichever one he can get first. I have a love for Honda, having ridden Honda bikes before, but also using honda autos and even mowers and garden tools. I appreciate their great reliability as well as quality and engine smoothness. But, I have no doubt the KLX would be great as well, and I especially like its adjustable suspension. I will have one of these two bikes just as soon as I can get my hands on one! Nice video, thanks!
Good video. Why not 1290 Adventure R?
A good option also but not my cup of tea 🫖
So I'm a short stumpy bastard 5 foot 8 215,im guessing this might be too light for me?
Too light for you? Not sure what you mean. If you mean not enough power - no, I think it would be just fine. (I'm 5'10" and about 240, and I plan to get it or the CRF) Light weight = great handling, and I looking forward to having such a lightweight bike..
@@WRjockey Like I'm too Fat for this bike 🤣im more like 220-225
Great video. Subscribed! I have the 890 adventure r and i am in love with it
Appreciate the support
Double the price of a new KLR 650.......
Whatever route I create and copy to Maps to GPX, it returns this message: "failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.0 429 Too Many Requests Please go back and check your Maps link." I get this even if I create a link that is a 2 mile drive on a straight road. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
I'm having the exact same issue
the same here..
is not work now
I'm buying this bike in a couple of weeks! Hyped up
COngrats!
Need and want are very different things. The best way to decide is always the scientific method. The formula "N + 1 = the correct number of bikes" is the solution to your question with "N" equaling the number of bikes you have right now. You're welcome!
I love that formula!
LOL!
I thought the 790 and 890 came with tubeless wheels?
They do. I use tubes and I believe the Rally models come with smaller rims + tubes.
@@crushingmiles I just traded my Tiger 900 for the 890 r. Ty for your info.
@@SWFlowseeker congrats!
Swapping out the stock wheels certainly moves the needle closer to one choosing the Rally. Do you need it? Heck no, but it would be fun to have.
You hit the nail on the head Tim!
the guy in ktm told you that you need the newer version?! That's incredible !
🤣
