    As a Catholic I find it EXTREMELY fascinating how elusive and diverse the English translation of the Bible is; before I converted I was really keen on using the Geneva Bible since “the pilgrims used it” and then as a Catholic I become obsessed with the ‘New Jerusalem Bible’ and it’s successor the RNJB. In my biased opinion I think the RSVCE and RNJB are at the top of (Catholic) Biblical scholarship, with the NRSVCE as a close second but it’s downright inaccessible to get an American printed version (all CE versions of the NRSV are almost exclusively made cheap in China, so this makes me prefer the RSVCE-by Oxford)

    I'm looking forward to watching this documentary. A few months ago, I appeared as a guest on a former Xian friend's podcast to discuss the topic of homosexuality and how Paul handled it. A couple things to remember: Paul was dealing with a specific problem (pederasty) at a particular location (Rome). He was also likely dealing with cultic male prostitution where eunuchs called 'Galli' where used in the worship of Cybele in Rome. My notes for that broadcast are pasted below and contain some frank discussion of sexual acts: "From Wiki: Generally, it was frowned upon for a free male citizen of Rome or Greece to be male prostitutes, but OK for non-free slaves and male visitors to a Roman or Greek providence to prostitute themselves. From WIKI: In Greece, "...adolescent citizens of free status who prostituted themselves were sometimes ridiculed, and were permanently prohibited by Attic law from performing some seven official functions. As non-citizens visiting or residing in a city-state could not perform official functions in any case whatsoever, they could prostitute themselves as much as they wanted." Roman’s 1:22-23 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Paul would have been speaking first as a Jew who likely believed that marriage was between a man and a woman and that those who were not married should marry rather than ‘burning in lust’. “Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” This statement of his was regarding the imminent return of Jesus and he urged single people, such as himself, to stay single so they weren’t distracted from the Lord’s work, but if they couldn’t control their lusts, they should marry. He would have also thought that any kind of sexual penetration that didn’t result in pregnancy, such as oral or an*l sex, would have been ‘unnatural’, as he says in Romans: “…their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.” Paul in Romans adopts a typical Jewish critique of the Greco-Roman would, that of their idolatry and sexual abuse or their cultic ‘abuse’ of sex. He even mentions this in Roman’s 1:22-23: “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.” Cultic images, for sure. He continues this tie between sexual practices and cultic images/idols in the next verse, 24: “24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator”. Let’s keep going: verse 26: “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” For men in the Greco-Roman world, it wasn’t unusual for an influential ‘free-born’ male citizen to have se*ual relations with not only his wife, but also his male/female slaves as well as male/female prostitutes, as long as he was the active participant doing the penetrating and not the passive person who was being penetrated. From what I remember, the Greeks were less particular about this but the Romans, being more militaristic, would lose their status if they were passively being penetrated. It’s akin to, and related to, being penetrated by a spear or other weapon during war. The phallic symbolism here is clear. Also, in Rome, women weren't allowed in the 'female superior' position (on top) because she would be the 'active' participant and the male would be the 'submissive' participant (it all comes down to who's the 'dom' and who's the 'sub')! And it relates to what Paul said in Corinthians about men who were ‘malakoi’ or ‘effeminate’, which many scholars would equate with male prostitutes, who performed ‘unnatural acts’ like an*l and oral s*x with other men and were the passive one’s being penetrated and were literally ‘soft’ like a woman. This goes back to what I was saying about the active and passive voice in the words 'malakoi' and ‘arsenokaitai’, and in context, Paul is referring to someone actively raping someone who is subjugated to someone else in a relational archetype that is not balanced, where the other person cannot say ‘no’ and not fear for their wellbeing. IOW, Paul is saying ‘don’t take advantage of those who are already disadvantaged’. This is markedly DIFFERENT than modern same-sex relationships that are based on free choice and economic equality, and the freedom and ABILITY to come and go as they please. To conflate these two is to compare apples to oranges… In Roman’s 1:26, Paul talks about “…their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones”, which is likely, as I state previous, about an*l sex or any type of sex that couldn’t result in a ‘natural’ pregnancy. Although it’s not said, I have a feeling this is somewhat related to how Paul as a Jew would view an act such as this as a form of Onanism, where someone wastes their ‘seed’ (odd that the tribal god of the bible didn’t know that semen isn’t like a seed that just needs soil in which to grow. It doesn’t contain everything nascent for life but is only half of the equation.) So again, any act like oral or an*l sex would be ‘unnatural’ in Paul’s Jewish worldview. Do note that Paul, who was unmarried and without children, might have been considered ‘effeminate’ where he grew up in Tarsus. His lack of a wife and family might have painted him as a male prostitute, despite being a ‘freeman’ as a citizen of Rome, so perhaps he had some acute sensitivities to this topic? And he’s also addressing the cultic practice of fertility rites used in the worship of Cybele (Kibble-lay) in Rome, which came to Rome and Greece from Phrygia. There were eunuchs called 'Galli' who engaged in the orgiastic rites there but because they’d either castrated themselves or were castrated, they couldn’t impregnant the female temple prostitutes. And those same prostitutes would only engage in either anal or oral sex (unnatural sex, because it doesn’t lead to pregnancy) because a pregnant temple prostitute is basically…out of a job! I’ll also add that Paul basically mentions these eunuchs and the ‘punishment’ to their bodies when he says in Romans 1:27 that “…the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” “Justin Martyr, in his 2nd century A.D. Apology refers to male and female prostitutes in the service of “the Mother of the Gods.” The male prostitutes had been “openly mutilated for the purpose of sodomy.” According to Justin this practice was subject to taxation by the Roman Senate. "

    Mark Strauss was a horrible heretic, Alexandrian pope kissing scholar, I sat under his teaching at Bethel Seminary, he's a closet satanist, he was on the tNIV translation committee as well, they wanted to make God 'gender neutral', like a Baphomet Tr@**y in the tNIV, very liberal, shocking that he was an interim pastor for so many mega churches in San Diego, he probably trained half the heretics in town. Bethel seminary is a pope kissing eccumenical seminary, many of my classmates had studied under the Jesuit/Catholic order in their institutions and they loved them! I remember Strauss -Leeman is his middle name, is he a Kabbalist Jew as well?- supporting the Jesus Seminary as well, I was shocked he backed them up when they came up with their documentary on openly questioning the Deity of Christ, so much for a professor who wrote a major Seminary textbook on the gospels. I didn't stay long in their Mdiv Program, Mark Leehman Strauss was one of the main reasons, he's a closet satanist! I've stuck with the King James Bible for decades now! Very excited for this series! I have more of a personal question: How do you balance intellectual, historical study with personal fervor for the presence of the Lord? I am deferring to theological research more than sermons these days, and finding it very fruitful and rounding in evangelism. How have you learned to balance intimate time with the Lord, and theological/historical study? In other words, does historical/intellectual study positively or negatively affect the personal, experiential relationship with Jesus? I desire for them to go beautifully hand-in-hand, thus making balance and sensitivity to the Spirit crucial. Curious on your thoughts, I hope my question is clear.

    I LOVE DBH translation as a tool to assist my own patristics studies. As I read father John Behr’s translations of Irenaeus, Origen, and Gregory of Nyssa I find DBH New Testament to correlate far better with these very early Cristian leaders beliefs than our English translations. In fact I doubt most early Christians would have any idea what the NIV or NASB etc are even talking about with regard to “eternity” as opposed to “unto the age” aiones. I have no doubt that with the exception of Tertullian (who left the church because they were too forgiving for his tastes) the early church fathers would say Hart is right and “NT Wright is wrong” as DBH humorously says in his response to NT Wright which you did not link but is worth a read. I find that whenever one person Translates the Bible, no matter how well seasoned the person is regarding Biblical Scholarship, I always err on the side of Caution. But from a different video I understand that he wrote this as more of an devotional Bible which to me makes sense but still. Also I find his layout or the New Testament books interesting since right now I'm reading through the New Testament in Chronological order, or the timeline in which the books were written (According to the Bible Gateway website) I'm going to have to write down his list of the Historical New Testament so I can read the NT in that order sometime. Something positive to come out of David Hart's work is his rebuke on our use (or misuse) of the Greek Historical Present (HP). The HP used in the Greek New Testament (mostly Gospels) regularly gets moved to the past tense. For example: He *_sees_* - to - he *_saw_* Or - Peter *_runs_* to the tomb - to - Peter *_ran_* to the tomb. The purpose of the Greek Historical Present was to enliven the event, to put the reader in the scene. I reference David Hart and speak about this in my preface to the New Testament.

    This sounds like an exercise in self-indulgence. Using obtuse words shows that DBH is more concerned about peacocking to the academy than to share his translation to the common man (or common pastor). Plus, I do not care for his criticisms against translation-by-committee. Committees ensure that personal idiosyncrasies (like DBH's use of obscure words) are kept out and more understandable prose be used instead. Sometimes it is better to be prudent than avant garde. BTW, might I suggest a one-man translation from far out of left field? Robert M. Price is a former Christian NT scholar turned atheist and Jesus Mythicist. Now while I thoroughly disagree with him on many of his beliefs, I do remember him translating the New Testament from Greek. It is available used on Amazon.

    Such a shame. The RSV is my favorite bible translation. It combines the elegance of the Tyndale/KJV tradition with (at the time) modern biblical scholarship.

    Mixed feeling on KJV. Made a hugh and positive impact toward spreading the gosple. Within its self it has short cummings. The kings himself , not a devout Christain. As a king he wanted a bible to promote PEACE , esp btn protastants and cathoilcs. Msny critisms of Kjv are really from the manuscripts which the translators had to work with that had already been tampered with etc. I dont think the scholors of that time really had the depth of knowlege we enjoy today. And.....the inadaquacies were ... trivial in a sense. Inserting the word cross etc. I CANNOT grasp the reasoning for ommiting Jehovah from the Bible , the name was not an issue of conflict. Etc. Why

    Interesting. Disappointing, initially, that you chose not to dissect the two words in question, still; I think you made the right choices in providing the Links and referencing Dr Shelly's Book - Thank You. Rosaria Butterfield argues 'Orientation' is a Mask for, or attempt to Legitimise, Sin = the missing of God's Definition, Intention, Context, Application. (She was a non-believing Lesbian, is now Saved, married) I always held: All the other things 1Cor6:9-10 mentions can't reasonably be argued to be 1 accepted as 'Orientations' 2 exempted from God's Judgements, Answers, or Forgiveness.

    • @KyleSletten
      @KyleSletten 3 месяца назад

      Unfortunately Rosaria Butterfield is neither a biblical expert nor an expert in homosexuality. Her opinions on the subject are of very little use and are extremely damaging to gay Christians.

    • @tonygohagan2766
      @tonygohagan2766 3 месяца назад

      @@KyleSletten That's your opinion. And 'fair enough' - that's where you stand personally. 'Experts' are not, by any measure at all, the sole or final authority, or only credible opinion on a given subject, or any subject. She rebukes Christians who affirm Homosexuality as being part of God's Image and directs her audiences to repentance of their sin whilst encouraging the truth: that homosexuality, (along with all of the other sins 1Cor 6 v9-1 mentions) is not to be sanctified and protected by Christians, but forsaken, repented of, by God's grace and the constant help of the Holy Ghost. That's her whole argument, thus she agrees with God. Supremely 'Useful' of anyone In Christ, and super 'useful' of someone from Academia. (No?) Be Reminded: When Jesus came to earth, people thought they were opposing a person who said things 'extremely damaging' to their paradigm, but they were opposing God - they murdered him to defend their positions and justified themselves as defenders of God/ The Truth/their Community. Jesus identified their positions as Satanic. Correctly. Rosaria Butterfield was a lesbian before she accepted Christ and correctly submits that the Freudian assertions and Obergefell legal status that affirm Sexual Orientation as part of the Identity of Humanity - but not part of unreconciled, fallen humanity awaiting Redemption - are in direct opposition to God's definition of what Humankind are: Image-bearers of God, made Male and Female: most 'useful' (No?). She's In Christ, has the Holy Ghost and is a Scholar with experience, deep understanding of, and published works relating to, homosexuality - in the personal, religious and political arenas, so I, myself, won't accept her opinions being as summarily diminished or as easily dismissed as you state they should be in your ad hominin non-answer to her argument.

      Thanks for your comments. I wrestled with whether or not to discuss the theological issues. Perhaps that will follow at some point. I’m familiar with Rosaria Butterfield and her backstory. I remember her story that led to her conversion.

      @@g0thamite You're welcome! God Bless and keep You. I will be interested if you do the theological issues video. I found a Video of Dr Shelly giving an interesting interview on RUclips about his book, which is too expensive for me at the moment, at $30. I may relent as it's substantial; but I went straight to buy it on Amazon! Aye, she's seemingly a lone brave voice, (I know she's not alone, tho'). - or is she just the currently accepted opposition to the unbiblical positions she rebukes? I don't know - Mayhap, Father raised her up!

    the problem we have with this video and so many others is that the picture on the screen does NOT match the bible edition they are talking about... for instance at the 3:38 minute mark of this video,.. he is talking about the first edition released in 2005 and showing the full notes edition...released in 2019 on the screen...basically skipping over a screen shot of what the 2005 edition text looked like and its format.. while the words of 2005 are coming out of his mouth the 2019 full notes bible is pictured... this video would have done a greater service.. to help people be aware of the different editions of the N.E.T. bible if they would have talked about them each one at a time.. and showed the corresponding bible on the screen that matched the dialogue..at the appropriate times....
