Why won't a tech fix my cheap amp?
Often us techs get asked why can't we fix a customers budget amp, or why we won't even book them in sometimes. The unfortunate truth has to do with simple economics and the realities of budget equipments resale value.

I lost my mother

Please donate and share if you can. gofund.me/9569474b In June my mother was murdered. It's something I wish nobody else would have to go through. Now that we've had the funeral and said our goodbyes through the walls of a sealed casket, the emotional and financial toll is showing itself. I'm a one man business these days and closing the store for a month during an already tough period has put ...

    Great video on this kick ass amp! I have this amp, and it recently stopped working. Before that, I replaced all 7 tubes, the speaker, and it sounded awesome. I moved, hand carried this boat anchor to my new garage, and it stopped working. The only way I get sound is by plugging into the Power Amp In, on the rear. If I plug into the main inputs, I have to turn everything all the way up, and it sounds horrible. Any suggestions on where to start?

    I’ve owned over 13 “high quality gibsons” 2 stayed in the collection. My custom and my standard. But to add to this I’ve owned 3 customs and wayyyy to many standards. So in conclusion (I am also a tech) I 1000% agree Gibson is ripping off there customers. Brand loyalty is no joke and people pay out the ass for it. But when you find a good one hold into it, because you won’t get it back.

    Plastic headphone jacks though, why?

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia 2 дня назад

      Because the ground needs to be isolated for noise reasons. It’s not the best plastic jack so the hole was widened slightly to fit a much higher quality one with chunkier thread.

    Been fixing, setting up, modding, re-fretting and resurrecting guitars as a hobby for a few years now, have acquired a few tools of course and really do get a buzz when a common item that doesn't come from Stew Mac is able to be adapted for a job on a guitar! The diamond crowning tools have come and gone and I am back to smoothed off triangle files for crowning, linseed oil rather than distilled Tibetan Goji oil or such for frets etc. Keep 'em coming.

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia 3 дня назад

      I’m not big on linseed or other similar oils for fretboards. I want a non penetrating oil that doesn’t cure. White mineral oil is perfect and cheap. I’ve been using the same bottle from ikea professionally for the last 7 years.

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia 19 дней назад

      You got very lucky on that one then. The super cheap instruments out there are more likely to have QC and manufacturing issues but sometimes they can be alright. Then again, it’s a $200 guitar so expecting a flawless instrument isn’t realistic so it’s acceptable for it to be on the janky side as long as it still plays. Getting a $1500 guitar that is hit or miss? Not acceptable.

    • @sirspongadoodle
      @sirspongadoodle 19 дней назад

      @@drgearaustralia nah i honestly believe the cheap instruments are getting better and better, companies like gibson and fender arent changing with the times, its no longer acceptable to charge that amount of money for a guitar of that quality anymore, and if these companies dont change then the cheap brands like harley benton will take there place...

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia 19 дней назад

      @@sirspongadoodle oh I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just putting it into context. The quality of todays $500 guitars is beyond that of comparable instruments from 30 years ago which cost 4 times as much. Other brands putting out $2000+ instruments these days are immaculate but the legacy brands are leaning on that legacy due to how much PE money is involved in them. Suhr, Ibanez, Collings, Cort, plus many others go to show you can get great quality at any price and will get someting that's worth what you paid for it. However, I've found that anythign sub $300 is generally 50/50 on whether it's really playable or not. Seen several Artist guitars that were firewood, but thatnkfully the customer got replacements for refunds each time.

    I have a couple of old CD60 combos. I'm surprised they don't get more love, they sound great. I used F&T caps in the power section. One of mine had a weird oscillation on the lead channel, turned out it was a bad filter cap on the preamp board. These things are nearly 40 years old, so anyone who owns one should really replace the electrolytics. I had one blow up on the power supply board, it sprayed cap goo all over everything inside. A lot easier to change the caps instead of cleaning all that gunk if one blows. Took me the better part of a day to get everything clean.

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia 24 дня назад

      Anything older than 15 years would do well to have the power filter caps changed. Over 30, it’s a must. These have a very particular sound to them that’s akin to the Mesa Mark series amps and they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Replacing the speaker with a good quality replacement helps them massively.

    • @drgearaustralia
      @drgearaustralia Месяц назад

      Yeah, that is luck. Could also be the difference between a players eye and a techs eye. There may be issues there that aren’t apparent to the untrained eye. I’ve worked on and sold untold numbers of Gibsons over the years and I can think of maybe a dozen over that span that would be classed as ‘flawless’.

    • @robertwillett4122
      @robertwillett4122 Месяц назад

      @drgearaustralia I understand. I've been playing and buying guitars for 45 years. I know as much as there is to know about guitars. Everyone tries to copy the L.P. for a reason. Now people think all Gibsons have major problems. And you're right. It's probably the buyer. I love the sound of a proper Les Paul. Just make sure you inspect it and have the knowledge of what a great example is. If you buy one that's shouldn't have passed quality control. We'll that's on the person buying it. If you buy one from the internet, you better make sure they have a no matter what return policy. I'm not a rookie.

      Even though they were at the peak of the bad manufacturing, seeing the proud ‘Union made’ sticker inside those old Gibsons meant you knew the workers were paid a living wage. The same thing happened with Fender over the last few years.
