There's a quote from the show runner or director saying there are all these interesting male characters, but she found an unnamed daughter and decided to focus on her. Instead of adapting characters and stories drawn directly from Tolkien, they of course latch onto the first irrelevant female they can find so they can simultaneously girl boss and tell whatever bastardized story they want. Sad because I was actually hesitantly optimistic for this, but of course, here we go again.
