Fall cleanup & Winter prep for Silver Fox Rabbits
I'm watching a 2 yr old video but wanted to make a suggestion to use the black rubber bowls you get at Tractor Supply. They're heavy but bend to break the ice each visit during the winter and they don't get turned over like those silver bowls. Best 'investment' I've made for the winter time. They're basically indestructible. I feel you with girls not lifting. We have one that we have to constantly move.
Good Lord gril, you need a walk behind snow blower. The work and time you would save . 👍☺
Do you have printable breeding logs ? I'm currently using a calendar but these look really useful and easy to look at. Haha, never mind I went backwards in your video and see that you do!! Thanks lol
I hope it helps!
The separate grow up hutches is a good idea. I like that.
Love this. You are definitely better off raising your own meat even if a little more expensive. I’ve been to facilities that process meat and trust me it will make you thankful you’re raising your own meat.
Thanks! I have missed your comments! Hope you are doing well.
If Darlene would’ve produced better like your other mama rabbits that would change your numbers maybe quite a bit. Your numbers now are worst case, which happens in real life. Appreciate all your info .
Dont forget to compost the deadkits in to the garden.
Absolutely, always do!
Can you please make rabbit videos down at your huch
She has a few videos of her rabbits at the hutch..
I appreciate your openness!!
Still cheaper than chicken feed
Thanks 😊
At 22:39 minutes, I meant to say dollars per pound. Not per rabbit. Sorry about that.
This level of honesty is exactly what we all need. Caring about what we eat by raising our own doesn’t make it cheaper. It means it’s self-controlled and healthy.
I agree :)
Another factor that most do not provide or track is the labor hours involved.
Silver fox are extremely expensive it seems
This brings reality to the forefront. I'm gonna keep at it anyway. Knowing where my food comes from is too important.
Absolutely, I agree with you!
I do recommend leaving out the hay. spend your money on good pellet. last year I used purina complete and the grow out thrived on that but the breeders did not. The grow outs stayed at an "excellent rate" of growth on the meat rabbit chart on this. I have 1 buck and does but will be keeping a doe out of one of my litters this month. I like raising meat chicken about every other year and use them primarily to make dog food. I use the rabbit bones raw and ground as a dog food supplement.
This is great information. Thank you for sharing! A bale of grass hay here in Central IL is $5 / bale. I'm just getting started with meat rabbits (due to Kindle my 1st on Feb 4th). What I really learned in this video is that I can't depend on my does and bucks to perform well and the turn-around of 2-4 years of good production goes fast!
Thank so much! I hope you have a great first year raising your rabbits.:)
You are about a week and a half ahead of me! Wish us both luck 😅
@@taylorsessions4143 good luck!
@@thestonehearthfarmhouse haha, thank you and many thanks for your content! I was just thinking that we've spent a ton of money on feeding these rabbits to get to this point, I hope that they are productive this year! We bought young Rex's last fall, then we waited until January to get started with breeding even though we could've gone a little sooner. We also had a litter of puppies that we had to sell, so we wanted to catch our own breath and recoup before baby bunnies!
I have a Rabittery too. Been doing it for decades and your numbers make sense. Kind of high but No Judgement from me. I have heritage breeds too. American Sables( 3 females), Chinchilla( a trio) and Califormias( 2 males). I am up in Quebec North of you. I would suggest a few things to reduce your cost. I feed this everyday about 10-15% of their feed. Fresh or Dried works great. I give them comfrey and sugar maple leaves or apple tree leaves (they love twigs). Both account for 25% of their daily feed. They love it! Comfrey helps them greatly with digestion. Also always have Pine cones in their cage. They love to chew those. I find that many time they eat because they need to chew. The pine cones actually reduce the feed cost. 1 big cone last about 3 weeks. They get lots of Timothy hay and pellets 1x/day I have been feeding them like this for more then a decade. I plan 6 liters/ year. 5 does total. This year I harvested 208 kits with an average weight of 2.5 to 3 lbs. My point is that I grow or gather these 3 things and the only cost is my time. It's about a 25% savings yearly. Good luck!
Thank you so much for the advice! I have comfrey and plenty of pinecones that I can offer them. That’s an interesting thought about what you said about them eating just to chew. I never thought of that! It makes sense.
@ Happy to help! BTW the Pinecones should be opened and have lost their seeds. They need to be the dried Husks part that are on the ground (without being too old LOL!) Gather them in September/October when they fall off the tree. Keep them in brown carton boxes. Not a plastic bag. They must stay brownish and not go grey. A grey one as a winter under it's belt. Lastly, there will be much less manure/poop by about 20-25% but the grow rate will not be impacted. Thus what they eat will actually be absorbed and not just pass through...
Thank you for all the great informational videos youve put out for rabbits. Im new to this . I was wondering why some people say yiu must bleed out the rabbit soon affer dispatching while heart is still beating BUT then there are others who dont do that . Have you noticed any negative flavor difference in the meat by not bleeding out the rabbit. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! The rabbits always bleed out when I dispatch them. They are hanging and once the head is removed, the blood pours out every time. I have never tried it any other way.
Hi. I have a question... How many times you let the big mama have babies. Before you look up for a new mom to continue the rabbit family? Thanks for sharing this Gem of information.
Hi! 😊 It really depends on the rabbit. I have a 4 year old now that still has litters, but she is slowing down with her litter sizes. That's usually a good indicator that she needs to be replaced. And at that point I would save a kit from her litter. Thanks for the comment and compliment!
Thank you so VERY much for posting this video. It is extremely helpful.
Your welcome. And thank you 😀
I raise both Eggs provide the amino acids our bodies require and fats that a rabbit doesnt. Lowfat protein from the abundant meat a rabbit provides. Neither is better than the other Both compliment each other.
Hi! I wasn't talking so much about the eggs. I was speaking about raising the meat between the two. Chicken meat & rabbit meat. I agree with you. And I honestly wish I made it more of a priority to emphasize the importance of healthy animal fats in the diet. I implement parts of the gaps diet into my family's diet as well and know how important it is. I raise chicken eggs, quail eggs and rabbit meat. They do compliment each other for sure! 😊
Is the rabbit meat the one on the right and the chicken on the left? I love your videos!!! My FAVORITE way to have rabbit is smoked. We have a treager pellet smoker and I adore bbq smoked rabbit. It’s heavenly. Its one of my kids favorite meals and Im constantly being asked when we are having smoked rabbit again. My rabbit set up is small so I ran out of rabbit and am currently waiting on some grow outs. We’ve also had some rough winter weather (-13 last night) and I need to adjust some things before having more babies. When summer comes I will be building more cages.
Rabbit meat is on the left. :) Thank you! Thanks for sharing. I will have to try it! Wow that’s cold!
Yum. I can't wait to have more rabbit to cook with this spring. This looks delicious!
Thanks!!
Oh, and I am guessing you are probably going to hold back that one baby of Lucky's that you love so much. She definitely is sweet! Maybe she will take after her mom in her great mothering!
Yay! I know I am six months late (I took a farming youtube break) but I am so glad you did this! I love it!
i really like the tip about "I put the feeders on the inside, because, if i dont, i wont open the cages and interact with the animals." thats wisdom that only comes with age. never had a rabbit. but im interested.
I appreciate that! Thanks

I don't understand this video.
When are you releasing a video of your rabbits
Thanks for asking! Rabbits are still a huge part of my channel. Where I am located right now, it has been very cold. I have not bred them and there is really nothing going on with them right now to record. I will be breeding again soon before winter is over. I will be releasing a video soon on the yearly cost of raising rabbits.
Thank you so much for sharing this Ashley! I knew that Dandelions were good for you and use the leaves and the flowers for my family and my rabbits but I never really used the root because all I had heard is it is a good coffee replacement and both my husband and I don't drink coffee. But I do have liver problems so now I really want to try this as something to help in my healing process!
Yes! They are so easy and cheap to harvest as well. Free natural medicine that so many people kill with chemicals. Glad the video was helpful 🙂
@@thestonehearthfarmhouse right?! I looove foraging for myself and my rabbits and it’s sad how many plants are unwanted by people because they simply don’t know how beneficial they are! Also, I love the new channel name! I did think The Rabbitat was super cute but this name is also so fitting for you!
So true! And thank you! I loved my old channel name but I wanted to create more homestead content and wanted a name to reflect that. I will still be posting rabbit content as well. :)
Heading on over for the recipe now!!!
🤤 looks amazing!! Thank you! God bless! Soli Deo Gloria~
Thank you! I hope you enjoy them! 😊 God Bless
I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks. From my experience, rabbits all seem to be introverts and are happiest in their own cage. I thought about colony style, but I don't think I will venture that way.
I'm so glad! Thanks :) I have thought about it, maybe in the future I will but as of now, I have no plans. Hutches work so well. If I did do a colony, I would be doing it just to try it and see.
I did this cedar branches in with my quail no more pecking hope this works for you love your video's
To get quail to stop pecking each other simply place a cedar branch in cage with them calms them down no need to separate. Works really well.
Thank you so much for the advice!
Awesome explanation
This is the 3rd time me trying to add this comment. go to look up disposable Shrinkable storage covers. save you on your plastic wrap.
Thank you, I'll look into it 🙂
Probably raccoons or possums

We are going to be getting our first meat rabbits, for the first time, this spring. I have been watching as many vidoes as I can. I appreciate the knowledge that you are sharing with us! Thank you!
I am so happy for you! I wish you the best on your new adventure 😃
@ thank you!
72 year old rabbit lady here..still raising em.....❤ love your videos
That's wonderful! Thank you :)
Awesome job thank you
Thank you
Good job
I'm in Canada and we have really harsh cold temperatures, so we live for our heated dog bowls for our bunnies! So far it's been a blessing. 2 of my does are soiling their nesting boxes and now i'm wondering if i should just block them access to it for a bit until they catch on that they should do their business through the wire?.... I was given the hutch and they have built-in nesting boxes...
Hi! I would wait until the last minute to give them their nest box, if they are soiling it. Since yours are built in I would block it off until day 25 of their pregnancy. Hope that helps! My younger does do that sometimes, but usually after their first litter, they stop soiling the nest box.
I would learn to master time management. With a fulltime job and running a homestead is challenging.
You are right, it takes a lot of work!
I need to learn how to make pasture/ grazing land. Our dirt is like talcum powder.
Which homesteading skills do you want to master in 2025? Let me know in the comments-I’d love to hear your goals! 🐓🌿🍞
Solar.
