‘... an Irishman’s definition of a net ...’ in Irish Gaelic:
In this video, I translate a line from Bertrand Russell’s (1872-1970) ‘The ABC of Atoms’ (1923) into Irish Gaelic.
Transcript:
CIARAN AODH MAC ARDGHAIL:

Last night, I was reading ‘The ABC of Atoms’ by Bertrand Russell. At first, atoms can really only be described by way of analogy, and the analogy that Russell punts for in the book’s Introduction is that of a net.
A net, like an atom, is a physical object comprising mostly
empty space.
Russell then introduces us to
an Irishman’s definition of a
‘net’, which, according to Russell,
is: ‘a number of holes tied together with pieces of string.’
Although I, as an
Irishman, have never heard this definition of ‘a net’-and I suspect that few of my Irish co...

    Transcript: “The motto of the Ulster Freedom Fighters: ‘Feriēns tegō’; ‘Striking, I defend.’ ‘tegō’ literally means: ‘I cover’, and it is from this verb that we get: ‘tēctum’, which means ‘roof’. In the Roman Catholic Mass, we have: ‘Domine, nōn sum dignus ut intrēs sub tēctum meum...’ ‘Oh Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter underneath my roof...’ so a ‘roof’ is: ‘a covering of a house’ so, literally: ‘Feriēns tegō’ would mean something like: ‘punching, I cover’ but, idiomatically it means: ‘striking, I defend’ . The Ulster Freedom Fighters are the military wing of the Ulster Defence Association, but really the Ulster Defence Association is the military wing of the Ulster Defence Association. However, in order to keep the Ulster Defence Association legal, they perpetrated their terrorism under the name Ulster Freedom Fighters. There were some extremely charismatic leaders, though, in the Ulster Defence Associatio. I am a secular Catholic from Southern Ireland, and I obviously have no regard for a terrorist group that goes about murdering innocent Catholics, however, that said, there were some extremely charismatic leaders within the Ulster Defence Association: Andy Tyrie, John McMichael and Ray Smallwoods: all of these men were extremely charismatic: there was just something about these three men that drew you in, even if you disagree with them, and another thing that is interesting about the Ulster Defence Association is that they flirted with the idea of an Independent Ulster. On the night that Ray Smallwoods was murdered by the IRA, he actually had an Independent-Ulster flag flying outside his window. The Independent-Ulster flag is the Cross of Saint Patrick; the saltire of Saint Patrick; the red saltire on a white background mixed with Saint Andrew’s saltire, so on it we have a red cross on a blue; we have a red saltire on a blue background with the Red Hand of Ulster and the hexagram representing the Six Counties, and that is the flag of an Independent Ulster, and John McMichael’s son, Gary McMichael: he too wants an Independent Ulster. I find that the Independent-Ulster movement: the movement within Protestantism and Loyalism to make Northern Ireland an independent realm... I find that this is a fascinating position and so mottoes are a great way to build vocabulary, in Latin, and I remember about twenty years ago, I used to travel down quite a bit to East Belfast, for... with my uncle, and in Loyalist areas, you would see a lot of paramilitary paraphernalia: flags and graffiti with Loyalist symbols and mottoes and things like that, and so: ‘Feriēns tegō’, and this of course, here, is referencing the Red Hand of Ulster, clenched as a fist... so... it’s the Red Hand of Ulster clenched as a fist; clenched as a fist punching... that supposedly defends the Protestant and Loyalist community.”

This is the case since ancient greek from Plato etc. and is still the case in the 21st century - it was always like that and was in no century ever pronounced as "oü" like you did in this video. @BesserGlauben Месяц назад

      @@ciaran13786 No, I'm talking about classical hebrew pronunciation. The dagesh doesn't work that way. The linea Maqqef between מה זה combines two words with the former in the construct state, yet they are two words. In classical hebrew, there is never a consonant pronounced from the following word - regardless of a possible dagesh. Not only in this case - a dagesh never works that way (i.e. overlapping over words with it being pronounced in the syllable of the former word).

    • @BesserGlauben
      @BesserGlauben Месяц назад

      @@ciaran13786 Besides, a dagesh doesn't even work that way in one single word. The doubling doesn't mean you ever do a stop in the word - for example you'd never pronounce "האיש עמי דבר ממך" as "haish 'im mi dib ber mim mekh" - that sounds terrible. You never stop at a dagesh, the correct pronunciation is "haish 'immi dibber mimmekh"

    • @BesserGlauben
      @BesserGlauben Месяц назад

      @@ciaran13786 Also: the "ei" pronunciation of the tsere (צרי) is modern hebrew pronunciation and not classical hebrew, since you claimed to use the latter. The classical hebrew pronunciation of tsere is "e" as in "tres" in french or "dreh" in german, I don't find an example in english, since english uses a lot of diphthongs. Beth for example pronounces tsere most of the time as a səgol, that's what modern israelites do. When followed by a י she pronounces it as "ay" like in "way" - that's also modern pronunciation - yet she preserves the classical pronunciation of ע for example with the original guttural. The linea maqqef is therefore transliterated maqqef according to classical pronunciation, not maqeif.

  • @BesserGlauben
    @BesserGlauben Месяц назад

    The zayin isn't part of מה and therefore it is "mah zeh" and not "mahz zah". Besides that, זה has a səgol and not a qames, therefore it's "zeh" not "zah".

    To be fair to the British Government, though, they would have rejected the term: ‘Ulsterisation’ and would have preferred instead: ‘normalisation’. However, in my view, the pretended goal: making Northern Ireland a ‘normal’ part of the United Kingdom was never really in view by the British Government. Take the Downing Street Declaration: the British Government would never say about a “normal” part of mainland Britain that it had no ‘selfish strategic or economic interest’ in it. However, such a statement was in line with Ulsterisation, and with a British desire to ultimately disengage with Northern Ireland. In my view, the actual aim of the British Government was to make Northern Ireland a “normal” overseas self-governing Crown Dependency... which is what the Isle of Man currently is. Arguably, they succeeded in this beyond their wildest imaginings. The Northern Irish question, by and large, is confined to Northern Ireland.

    The Latin phrase under discussion is: ‘Num cāsū factus est mundus?’ which means: ‘Was the world made by chance?’ or, better still: ‘The world was hardly made by chance, now, was it?’ In the above Latin sentence, the interrogative particle: ‘num’ tells us that we expect the negative answer: ‘No, of course the world was not made by chance!’ If one were to pronounce Latin with the Received Pronunciation-RP is not rhotic-then this is to mispronounce most r’s and most-if not all-of the vowels. Long ‘o’ in both Hiberno-English and Latin is pronounced: /oː/ whereas in RP it is /ɛoː/. short ‘a’ in both Hiberno-English and Latin is pronounced /ɑ/ whereas in RP, it is pronounced: /æ/. If one be really posh, like the characters in the crown, short ‘a’ can even be pronounced as: ‘ɛ’. Often the characters in The Crown speak of being ‘heppy’. The RP is dying in England. Not even princes William and Harry use it. However, thankfully, ‘The Crown’ has preserved 6 series of exquisite RP. To pronounce Latin in an Irish accent is, in my view, to pronounce all the r’s and vowels of Latin perfectly. The Irish accent-or ‘Hiberno-English’-is a rhotic pronunciation of the English language which means that r’s are always pronounced. ‘rhō’, in Greek signifies our English letter ‘r’ hence the linguistic term: ‘rhotic’. There are other similarities to the Irish (and Scottish) like the Romans giving each other unflattering nicknames. ‘Brūtus’, for instance means: ‘dull’, ‘stupid’, ‘brutal’ and ‘Cicerō’ means ‘warts-on-his-nose’. ___ #latin #education #translation #classics #history #linguistics #ireland #thecrownnetflix

    If Calvinists want to be truly consistent with their logic then they would have to admit that they don't know if they're saved. Under their worldview, God creates confused and unsaved people who identify as Christians but end up in Hell; they are actually not part of the elect. So how do they know they are not one of those people? They can have hope at best but not assurance.

      Yes, they could be victims of a ‘strong delusion’. Jesus could say to them: ‘I never knew you.’ If Christians were never Christians to begin with, then Calvinists might not be Christians right now. They, too, might be those soon to go out from the Christian Church because they were never of the Christian church.

    I wrote my last comment before I finished watching. Now that I have finished, I must say I am very confused. How could you prop up The Bible Mini-series, Jesus Christ Superstar and even The Passion and yet criticize The Chosen for: 1. Supposed imaginary characters 2. Adding back story 3. Supporting traditional beliefs 4. Turning the Bible into a soap opera 5. Making money from producing the show? Are not the other shows mentioned just as egregious- or even worse? The Passion was the biggest grossing R-rated movie of its time. It took its characters and story very seriously and played it literal. It added scenes such as the one where Jesus made a Roman-style table while talking to His mother. Theee was also a demon baby. But worse yet, it incorporated the stations of the cross- even Veronica’s cloth that took in the image of Jesus’ face. Pure tension that took any logical person out of the moment. The Bible mini-series was even worse. No doubt it was taken seriously. The producers saw it as their calling and an offering to God. I didn’t watch the New Testament, but the OT had a literal Genesis and Flood. I’m good with that. But I was very much against the cringe-worthy additions like the ninja-angels who went to Sodom. It was just embarrassing on every level. The birth of Jesus had the three kings appear at the manger- when we know they were magi and they didn’t make it to Jesus until he was a young child. The producers made enough that they kept on making similar projects- including the re-release of the Jesus story as a movie - which made extra money from recycled film. And don’t get me started by how imaginary Jesus Christ Suoeratar is. Mary Magdalene love story? Judas the innocent? Jesus as a weeping clown crucified on a fence with no resurrection? Of course, they never made money on that production. Unless you count the many years the was presented all over the world. Oh- and the filmed version as well. I don’t understand most of your criticisms. It may just be that this one makes an honest effort to place this story in the middle of actual history. It seeks to honor Jesus and point viewers back to the Bible. Many people have a problem with that.

      Yeah is shouldn't make sense. I feel the same way though. I like Jesus Christ Superstar. It's not even trying to be Biblical. The Chosen is different. It's sneaky, manipulative. The people behind it are dishonest. They sell corrupt, edited Bibles on their website. Nobody should watch it. It will brainwash you. Maybe it already has.

    If you enjoyed those other films about Jesus, I do think you should give The Chosen another chance. If you are only going to watch one episode to make an opinion of season one. I would suggest episode six. It has two Biblical miracles you would be familiar with, yet it doesn’t spoil anything for the rest of the season. The Chosen is more like Biblical fiction or historical fiction. The viewer gets to see what it might have been like to walk with Jesus and how the people around Him changed as a result. The show does start slow - on purpose. You are supposed to be learning about the disciples and what it was like in the first century before Jesus comes and interrupts it all. You really don’t even get a major Bible event until episode four. But from there on, those scenes become regular. I think the biggest thing The Chosen does is return Jesus to his first century Jewish roots. You see things in life of history and culture- which brings a whole other level of meaning to the viewer. I never pictured Jesus saying the traditional Jewish prayers or celebrating the Festival of Booths. What was Samaria like? And what is the Sanhedrin all about? This all comes together to weave a beautiful picture of how things might have been. Just don’t expect 100% Bible- this show is meant to honor the Gospel stories, show a plausible version of how it could have played out, and point the viewer back to the Bible.

      Thanks for watching the video! I have a very low view count. Very few people watch to the end! I based my critiques on the Chosen on this Christian Video. Jenkins seems to have cynical marketing intentions as well. He wants to turn the Chosen into a billion dollar franchise. I sometimes bump into Charlene Mc Kenna who was an actress in Roma Downey’s series here in Ireland. Even conservative Bible scholars like Habermas say that the Gospels were written decades after the death of Jesus. Father Casey is a Catholic priest, and even he criticised Jenkins for this. ruclips.net/video/9LI484mywHU/видео.htmlsi=gj2ga7AYdpHnNZC6

      According to Bart Ehrman, Jesus's conversation with Nicodemus hinges upon the Greek prefix ‘ana-’ which can mean both ‘from above’ and ‘again’. Nicodemus comically misinterprets Jesus's saying as that one must be physically born again. Jesus says, no, one must be spiritually reborn from above. According to Ehrman, this conversation only works in Greek, and not in Hebrew or Aramaic. If this conversation never happened, then, in my view, it is safe to assume that he never existed. As Alexa says: only the Gospel of John mentions him in the New Testament.

It is funded by the extremely wealthy mormons, but they pretended it was a crowd funded effort. It is sneaky and manipulative. They also sell edited, rewritten Gospel or Bible on their website. I don't really want to support that and the LDS is not to be trusted. If you've watched critiques hopefully you've already heard all this from others. I've heard from many others who quit watching after season 1. It's like they try to lure us in and then they start going off script and misrepresenting Jesus. @@ciaran13786 Sir, Bart Ehrman is a very confused person. Sometimes he has interesting things to say but I won't listen to him anymore. Can I suggest something for your consideration, about Nicodemus? Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night. You need to consider that he did not want to be seen associating with Jesus or his band. Therefor, the fact he is not mentioned until the Gospel according to John should make sense. John is the last Gospel account to be written. Do you see where I am trying to go with this? Plus you can't ignore the fact that the same people were not always present. If Peter or Matthew were not there in the moment, it would be dishonest of them to report on it, wouldn't it? Lazarus was probably the only one who heard the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. May I suggest to you that the Gospel according to John was written by Lazarus, and John only added a note on the end, giving it a seal of approval from one of the 12. The "disciple who Jesus loved" is the code for Lazarus. Not John. They wanted to kill Lazarus. It is quite likely they were hesitant to write down things what could become incriminating. Nicodemus was probably dead by the time according to John started to circulate. By the way, Catholic priests are not Christians. Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy are not Christian. They are pagan cults. They've left the Bible behind and are promoting doctrines of demons. As bad as Bart Ehrman is you are probably better off learning about the Bible from him instead of Catholic priests.
