DESCRIPTION OF THE GUITAR.
If you cast around for a guitar to play some jazz on you’ll find so many to choose from but I took a long punt on one I spotted on Amazon for just under £300. For as long as it’s available you may find it by searching “Musoo Hollow Body Jazz Guitar”. There are too few details about the guitar in the description so almost all the info below refers to my guitar. I e-mailed Musoo and Susan told me that it’s sold under the Batking Guitar brand (see above) with the reference n...

GLARRY GTL SEMI-HOLLOW GUITAR. Some thoughts about this budget guitar.
Просмотров 14411 месяцев назад
Here' are my thoughts about the Glarry GTL Semi-Hollow Tele-style guitar I bought recently for £92 (UK) with a view to carrying out quite a few modifications in the future. My view is that it's excellent value for money but it has a few one or two issues as I point out. Unfortunately I may have snapped up the last one available in the UK as Glarry tell me they won't be making any more of these ...
TANGLEWOOD TW 145/12 SC 12 string guitar. My thoughts about it and take a listen
Просмотров 754Год назад
I've had this Tanglewood TW145/12 SC 12 string gjuitar for some years now. It's a very nice, relatively small-bodied 12 string made with mahogany body and neck and a solid cedar top. It's great for strumming especially when in perfect tune and my example of this guitar stays in tune really well. I find the finger board a bit narrow for my fingers and when I first had it I had to do some work on...
Yamaha APX500 Rescued and Repaired. Review and Tones. A Great Value Electroacoustic Guitar
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
This nice Yamaha APX 500 guitar (ca 2000 ?) had been dropped and the neck broken. It might have been on the way to the tip, poor thing, but I thought it might be straight forward to repair it. I picked it up from the owner who had advertised it on Freeserve, a web based service where people can offer freebies to the community. With my favorite PVA wood glue and several clamps I managed to fix t...
Mystery Guitar? Can you identify the type of guitar and also the brand?
Просмотров 106Год назад
There are so many types and brands of electric guitars! Surely they all sound different? If that's true we should be able identify each one shouldn't we? Or is there a more serious question: are we being misled into thinking that they are all so different we really need to buy several/many? In the basic analysis, they are blocks of wood with bits of wire vibrating over one or more magnets wound...

The Epiphone Wildkat is a retro-looking semi-hollow body guitar with P90 pickups, a Bigsby tremolo and a control configuration which is interesting and really good in my view. HI Linda, It's a model 3103 serial No 594. It has a solid top and laminate back and sides. When these guitars were made the only strings available were all steel. The typical bronze type strings hadn't been developed back then. Martin reintroduced all steel strings for acoustic guitars not so long ago. They're called Monel strings after the alloy they're made from. Once I pout a set on this old guitar it came alive again and the strings last and last so don't oxidise/corrode. I record with this guitar because it has such a distinctive sound. It's bright

They might be able to tell you about the fret wire type (jumbo, medium etc)and material. You can google for fret wire suppliers luthier suppliers out there there are quite a few out there. If you get their address you could send them one of the worn frets to get a good match. Anyway, good luck and sounds like you must have played this guitar a lot! Hope this helps: All the best, Rob

Why do people keep confusing tone and the notes? Notes are on paper, I have never heard any note. This man can play great, and then he says note, where be obviously means the tone. Sure there is often a note causing the tone, but players usually leave te notes alone, they just play them, changing notes is composing, right. Note, tone, please be careful. Sorry, maybe you can call them totes. Totes in the score, and the totes we hear, high totes and low totes. We can tune the totes.

I ordered one. The inspection sticker said, "Passed."... Obviously because it passed right by inspection w/o a single glance. It was a disaster. It was assembled by no less than a blind monkey. The tuning keys were attached and screwed on completely uneven. The volume knob almost fell off, barely attached. The tone knob was missing the piece that said tone, which I found in the box. The "E" for Epiphone was was not glued on, lose in the plastic protecting the pick guard and the action was horrid. Luckily I ordered it through Guitar Center where it was delivered to. This was as embarrassing to them to try to fix the problems with customers listening in on the products wonderful quality as it was confusing to see such a disaster for me. I ended up rejecting it. I did however order another one which they inspected when it came in. One ot the tuners was still off set a bit and the "E"... Well I glued that on out of the way of the strumming area when I got home. They did fix the action better before I left. I'm ok with it as it is. As for the price, Probably would not have spent even that much on it had it not been the style acoustic w/ tuning knobs that caught my attention. It sounds really good on an acoustic amp. I put 80/20 bronze on it. The strings it comes with were probably a buck if that. I also replaced to 25 cent plastic bridge and nut with bone. On a scale of 1-10 I would give this guitar a 4 when it arrived. After changes a 6, maybe a 7. I do play it but I bought it mainly for the looks.

The action was way too high out of the box, but I tweaked everything. It plays really good now. Even a new Gibson, you’re gonna have to set it up. It’ll never be a Gibson, but you won’t feel bad about using it for an oar.

Hi Alan. Good that you could do your own adjustments to make the guitar play as you want. And you're right most if not all guitars need a good set up when you get them especially mail order. If bought from a dealer they should set them up before selling them especially the high end instruments. My guitar hada really bad 6th string what had been overstretched I think. It would never tune properly when all the other strings were fine. IT was corrected by replacing the string with a new one! Thanks for your comment and all the best. Rob

HI there. Sorry to have been slow to reply to you. It doesn't sound like a regular steel string acoustic guitar. It has a low volume and is quite lacking in the resonance and higher frequencies you might want. However, it does produce enough to practice with and it's not unpleasant. It was made to be amplified much like any hollow bodied "jazz guitar". I'm sure it was designed to be a low budget version of a Taylor T5 kind of thing. You may have seen that I replaced the supplied lipstick pickup with a stratocaster style humbucker. This made the guitar come alive. Now it's a really good instrument with a really good range of tones. I play it a lot. Hope this helps even if belatedly. All the best, Rob

Hi there. Sorry to have ben a long time in replying. OK, so these strings are made like regular steel strings. They have the regular little brass collars the string is wound around. So they can simply be pushed through the back of the holes in the bridge and over the saddle. No problem and easier than attaching regular classical strings in fact. Hope this helps. Hi there, nice to hear from you and thanks for your question. I still think the Hartwood is a very nice and unusual guitar: unusual because of the in-built FX. The initial problem I had was the internal mini amp speaker that came loose. No problem with this one (yet?). A fellow guitarist came and played it and was instantly impressed and started testing other guitars with FX and he thought the Hartwood still won out. As to the Cort, I don’t know it at all it but it doesn’t it’s a different beast I think as it doesn’t seem to have the FX. Remember these don’t need to be plugged in. I also note the Cort is quite a bit more expensive. All I can say is that the Hartwood is a very well made and head turning guitar. It sounds really good without the FX being on and I do play it around the place. Also, you can buy it, try it and return to G4M if not happy with it. By the way, I am not paid by G4M to promote their own brands. Good luck! All the best, Rob.

Hi Rob, so I finally bought the jumbo version. But as soon as I used the built-in effects, there was a cracking sound which I can only blame a faulty speaker. Having reached out to gear4music, they suggested I try a new guitar cable... seems like they don't understand what the problem is.. even after I have sent them the video! Rob - have you changed the strings on this guitar? How did that go for you? It has the weirdest system I've ever found with some sort of FIXED copper wire threaded through all the 'rings' at the end of each string underneath the tailpiece. Also, the tailpiece doesn't lift up with any sort of hinge so threading new strings through is very tricky. Apart from those issues, I had one ever-so-slight problem ....THE ELECTRICS WERE TOTALLY INOPERATIVE. Not a click or tone for any of the pickups so for electric jazz it's either useless or it will need a specialist to figure out the problem. Must say, following my experiences, I wouldn't recommend importing this from China . . . a Hartwood or G4M hollow body seems to be a safer buy in the UK.

    • @robrobson7101
      @robrobson7101 5 месяцев назад

Hi, and thanks for your comments. I’m really sorry that you’ve had a lot of trouble with this guitar. Firstly. on the question of the strings. My guitar had regular string anchors (little brass rings) attached to the tailpiece). However they wouldn’t pull through the holes in the tailpiece. The tailpiece is held on by screws at the bottom where the strap pin attaches. So I removed the tailpiece. Then I drilled out each hole with a wider bit so now the anchors will pull through. Then I replaced the tailpiece and now it will be easy to replace strings without removing the tailpiece. On the useless electronics then that’s really bad. I’ve built quite a few tone and volume circuits and they’re quite simple things. I’m wondering what would prevent both volume and tone controls from working. If it were me, I’d email Musoo or Batking and I’m sure they will reply. I had a few email exchanges with them before I bought mine. And again if it were me, I’d just take out the electronics and check out the circuitry. The F-holes are big enough to make this quite easy. I suspect there is just one cold joint or a misplaced junction. I could probably work it out anyway by looking at the standard “Gibson” circuits. I’m really sorry you’ve had this problem. But do contact Musoo/Batking. Mention my video which Batking is now using on their website and say Rob’s Strings & Things has replied to you. Very poor quality control. I will make an updated video that mentions the string tailpiece problem. Good luck..and do get back to them. My guitar is still perfect now the tailpiece is improved. All the best Rob

@@robrobson7101 Thanks Rob. What I found was that all the string-ends were connected under the tailpiece by a length of thick copper wire that was FIRMLY glued at each end to the underside of the tailpiece, so it couldn't be removed and the strings could not be slid off it. I've never seen anything like that before. It was totally impractical . . .unless it was a fudge by the person who built the guitar because of some sort of problem they had and the quality control didn't spot it? Mark you, they didn't spot the useless electrics either. That copper connecting wire certainly didn't look like a professional idea. Like you, I removed the tailpiece and found a so-called grounding wire which was mean to touch the copper wire that linked the strings. It looks very amateurish and I doubt the two wires ever actually connected. As you don't mention anything like that in your reply, I'm guessing you didn't find the same system. Thanks again for your response.

Thanks again. I just can’t understand what they were doing. No, I found what I expected to find. Certainly no wire to anchor the strings to. I am a bit “flabbergasted”. Did you by any chance take a picture of the tail pace with the wire? As to the wiring, I did find an earth wire wound round the strap pin. However, as I’m sure you know, that’s not going to influence the bad electronics. Do you have a multimeter?

I suggest you complain to Musoo/Batking by emailing Susan on musooguitars@163.com. I’ve had several email exchanges with her. Not sure what might come of it but it’s worth a try.

Hi, thanks for the question. Yes, it stays in tune. I think the construction is really good. The only issue I had with it when I bought it was the nut. I had to cut the string guides to improve the intonation at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd frets. A nice guitar and quite small compared to some 12stringers! All the best, Rob

@Rob Robson - thanks for this video. Have you tried TI's John Pearse Folk strings as well? Curious if you'd do a comparison or share your thoughts on the two?

Hi Mike, nice to hear from you and thanks for the question. No, not tried these strings and generally haven’t played John Pearce strings. I looked up TI’s but couldn’t find them on a few online string sellers here in the uk. Do they have another name? Do you play them and what are they like? Rob

Hi Alan, good to hear from you and thanks for the comment and question. You’re right, for completeness, I should have done an unamplified sound test. So, I just tried it and it’s OK and what I’d expect. Kind of “boxy” sound, certainly not a big volume like a proper acoustic guitar but OK. So, perfectly acceptable for practicing. I can certainly feel the resonance in the body. Maybe a deep bodied jazz style guitar would be better but I don’t have one. But of course it’s intended to be hooked up to an amp and then it’s just so good. I have been in touch with Musoo (Batking guitars) and they now have put up the full specs and also a link to my RUclips video. It’s a much admired guitar: I’m now playing it in a jazz funk band. One thing to note is that when replacing the strings I had to take the tailpiece off because the string anchors would pull through the holes in the tailpiece. So I drilled out the holes to increase the hole radius. Now the anchors can be pushed through easily with no detrimental effect. I must let Batking know. Thanks again and all the best, Rob

Hi again Gert. The Nashville Steel guitar is not really a good acoustic guitar. Yes, you can noodle around with it but it doesn’t sound great. You can think of it more as a hollow body electric guitar which I think is its forte. As I’ve pointed out it really needs the humbucker in place of the lipstick pickup but Thomann didn’t take up the idea. Does that help? Rob

Hello Rob, what is the depht of the guitar body?

    • @robrobson7101
      @robrobson7101 6 месяцев назад

Hi Geert, nice to hear from you. .The external body depth is 5cm all around the edges. The guitar has a flat back but with a slightly arched top. The internal depth at the sound holes is about 3.6cm but this may vary as I made a humbucker assembly to replace the lipstick pickup for a guy in France. But it didn't fit. Ive had mine for a while. With the humbucker in its a really nice guitar with a really good action. Really good value for money. All the best, Rob

There are quite a few Canadian guitarists I know who swear by these. I bought an 82 JV with Fender on the headstock last year. It’s a really, really great guitar. The neck is a wee bit small for me but I make do!

I just got the jumbo through the post 15 mins ago and had to come back to this review to say thanks and to let you know how much I already love it! The neck is so amazing to play. So comfortable and well proportioned. Bending is way easier than on my Tanghlewood GW4. I was in various guitar stores searching for something new two weeks ago. I tried guitars that were over double the price of this and none of which played quite like this one. So happy. It's such an amazing feeling picking up an instrument and feeling like you have owned it for years. The only thing I will say is that similar to yourself, the adhesive pads inside the guitar have started to come away. I am going to hold onto this guitar though and replace the pads when I change the strings. Thank you for your video and introducing me to my new favorite guitar!

So pleased to hear from you and to know you really like the guitar. You should let Gear4Music know that the internal amp is coming off. Mine’s still on so far but it could go any time Just this week, a guitarist friend of mine played the guitar and told me he went straight to the G4M web site. Not sure he bought one yet. One amusing thing he noticed was the “broken string” or the wavy stem of the vine on the finger board. You can expect similar comments “how can you play it with a broken string”. Funny! All the best Rob

I started for the same reason as you just almost 55 years later. Once I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan I wanted to play. But I never had the discipline Now I am loving it and play every day. Thanks for you videos
