terrific images and sound. Thank you! I never knew Dick Roden trained macdougall. Had another great horse a decade later with Divide and Rule.
Just a footnote, Raajpoot who Dick trained was much better than Macdougal but was difficult to condition and the owners refused to geld him. Ended up as a sire in USA but could well have been a Melbourne cup contender.
I was 65 then lol
MacDougal won but some bookies hated that horse to win.
Pat Glennon's the only jockey to win a Melbourne Cup at the beginning and at the end of a decade (1950's).
great call
I was 13. I was selling ice creams in the grandstand. A bloke and his rich looking girlfriend gave me a five pound tip. MacDougal was a Qld horse. He had won the Brisbane Cup and my dear old Mum was a Rocky girl and loved the jockey Paddy Glennon. I got 14-1 in the bookies ring So I had 2 pounds each way and kept a quid as a saver. I knew his silks colours white with a blue Maltese Cross. I couldn't hear the course commentator over the road of the crowd as they entered the home straight but I knew the colours. I was standing on the ice cream box in the grandstand. Half way down the straight I saw this big bay and the white, blue silks burst from the pack and come storming down the outside. I fell of the ice cream box yelling so hard. As they came back to scale I raced down to the fence yelling. I swear that as he walked past, MacDougal turned his head and winked and smiled at me. Swear! The happiest moment of all. Beautiful big magnificent MacDougal🤍💙♥️🖤
Beautiful story! My great-aunt raised MacDougall and was who the horse was named after, so seeing this footage was truly special!
Great story mate!
@@Milaa9987 Happy to share the memory with you. Your great aunt did an amazing job so a very belated thank you.
Always great to hear the stories based on my fathers' success. The win should have kept you in ice cream for quite a while.
My 21st Birthday and my first winning bet on the Melbourne Cup.
Fantastic - historical piece on Melb Cup of 1959 anything similar on horse racing would be greatly appreciated
Chicago meets ELP, interesting.......
