I'm almost embarrassed for Alicia Keys, messing up such a classic song, with her inferior voice. She may have some talents, but singing is not one of them. If she were in Fantasia's body, with that voice, she would have never seen the inside of a recording studio.

Way to go, Alicia Keys. Playing piano AND singing this classic with so much feeling. Wonderful! A bit of history: The original 1964 version belongs to Dionne Warwick. And it is that version that Vandross fell in love with. As a youngster in the 60s, he was such an admirer of Dionne Warwick that later on in interviews he repeatedly gave her credit for inspiring him to become a singer himself. Later in life, they became good friends and collaborators. He even produced DW's 1983 "How Many times Can We Say Goodbye" album on the ARISTA label. Vandross covered a few of DW's early Scepter-era recordings. Interestingly this song was written for a film of the same name. Even though Dionne Warwick is believed to have recorded this song first, Brook Benton also recorded a version conducted and arranged by Burt Bacharach around the same time. It was Brook Benton's version that appears in the film. Both versions enjoyed commercial success in the States and beyond back in 1963-64. However, Luther Vandross' 1981 version with his soulful, contemporary interpretation breathed new life into this classic taking it to the top of the R&B charts. It's now one of the most beloved R&B ballads of all time.

Ms.Mavis Staples version.... I've never read a comment about!! Dionne Warwick originally / first recorded this Classic. However everybody and their Moma knows that Luther ( May he R.I.P.) knocked this song out of the ballpark!!!!! And mostly all others who have performed have( after Luther's version.... have done it ....Luther style. That being said Ms. Warwick recorded this song in 1964....Ms.Staples recorded this song in 1969. When I first heard Ms.Staples version on the radio....I went to the Record Shop( which is what we called it back in the day) and purchased the 45rpm record. I am a huge fan of Ms.Warwick...huge!! Luther's vocals were/ are jawdropping!! In my most humble opinion....Ms.Mavis Staple' a version is very Soulful....she covered this song and slaaayed it ....as well!!!!

how anyone would dare touch 'a house is not a home' after Luther Vandross is beyond me. I've heard Alicia Keys, many times before, but on this performance she is flat...quite a few times actually. You don't have to have a tremendous ear to hear it

Do you realize you can have a mini concert, at home, just listening to the many artists who wanted to perform this great song, including people from other countries you never heard of, and so many of them are soo good, but in different ways. Alicia, Dusty, Whitney, from Idol Jacob and Tamyra, Gladys Night, version from "Glee" and Luther of course and so many more. The song writer should feel pretty damn good about this one.

Not really, the song was too big for both Cory, who I loved but was not the best singer, and Chris. It's easier to "show emotion" when you have a thousand opportunities to record the song, edit the parts you don't like and, obviously, act it. Alicia sang the whole thing LIVE and it was very emotional. Most importantly, she made the song her own. Check La'Porsha Renae's cover, though. I think it's my favorite version.

Makes me laugh when people try to criticize a phenomenal artist, for a phenomenal performance. She was born with musical talent and skills, beyond what most everyone in the world will ever achieve, yet those untalented people with I am sure little to no musical ability or talent think they know how this should be done or that "don't ever sing this song again". That is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard. This was beautifully done. I have explicit reasons for saying that too. Not just conjecture. For example, she chose an arrangement that contained a full array of sounds and instruments. This not only appeals more to the masses, but for the setting, where it is being held and how she is dressed all comes together. Second, she doesn't start off with a bunch of runs, which most singers make the mistake of doing. This is a very sad song and should be done in that fashion, especially coming from a female singing voice. She then adds on some playfull licks at the end, which is an homage to not only Luther, but others. Her voice holds true all the way thru the entire song and then ends classy. Well, well done!! Now you may not like the version, or specifics of her performance (which those who are criticizing never point out because they do not know what they are talking about), but this was truly a great performance.

I disagree...like Luthers version...far too much vocal acrobatics..and not all of them worked. the reason they do that is because it is a very difficult don't to sing.

This song is way too well written and far to intelligent to be made into the hullabaloo that comes out of Alicia Keys mouth. Keys is a fantastic artist, but this version is musically lazy. I had hoped that she would have stayed true to the actual melody and not done what so many other artists do - scales up and down pretending to give it soul
