Haunted Tales of Darkness - Read by Chris Halton
Румыния
Добавлен 24 фев 2024
Hi there! My name is Chris Halton, and my main enjoyment is to share and entertain with ghost stories and mysteries from the classic writers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, plus those stories I have written myself. I am also a documentary maker and narrate all of my work. I hope you enjoy the current selection of stories, with many more on the way and, hopefully, at least two every week. I have previously worked on BBC local radio and enjoyed a career as a police officer with experience as a detective and intelligence officer. I now reside in the Făgăraş mountains' quiet foothills in Transylvania, allowing me to write and narrate. I do hope you'll be a new subscriber and will check back regularly for new stories from the pens of the master writers as well as my own.
There Was A Man Dwelt By a Churchyard - (grave robbery) By M.R.James
In this tale, we encounter a man who resides near a churchyard-a setting ripe with history, secrets, and perhaps restless spirits. James skillfully draws us into the man’s world as the narrative unfolds, revealing hidden connections between the living and the dead. Shadows lengthen, and the boundary between reality and the supernatural blurs.

A Night in King's College Chapel by M.R.James
Просмотров 3292 часа назад
The story likely dates back to 1892, when James wrote an article about the chapel’s stained glass for the Cambridge Review. In a twist of fate, the tale mirrors the experience of someone accidentally locked inside the chapel overnight. Imagine the cold stone, the flickering candle, and the figures in the glass-suddenly animate, conversing in hushed tones. The Chapel Itself: King’s College Chape...
Number 13 - By M.R.James (a doorway to hell)

Away from England, this tale sets a fresh narrative in Denmark. An atmospheric, brooding tale of ghostly goings-on, Number 13 by M.R. James is a classic short story and a hallmark of the horror genre. A research trip to Denmark, a hotel with peculiar noises, rooms twelve and fourteen...but what of thirteen? Story read by Christopher Halton. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed learning about th...
Two Doctors By M.R James ( a tale of mystery and the supernatural)

The central characters are two doctors, and the story revolves around their mysterious and unsettling experiences. One of the doctors seems to have had an unhealthy interest in supernatural beings and the occult. As with many of M. R. James’ ...

In the 1920s, a group of Boy Scouts camps near Worbarrow Bay in Dorset, England. Among them are two scouts: Arthur Wilcox, the impossibly heroic one we mostly hear about, and Stanley Judkins, the troublemaker. Now, Stanley-rude, badly behaved, and without respect for authority-has a penchant for bending the rules. The scouts are warned not to enter a particular field containing a clump of trees...
Wicked Captain Walshawe of Wauling by J.Sheridan Le Fanu (A Vengeful Spirit)
Просмотров 46019 часов назад
Captain James Walshawe, a man both notorious and elusive, haunted the neighbourhood of Wauling. But don’t be misled by the honorific “captain”; it was bestowed upon him by courtesy, not military merit. His service had ended in 1766, leaving behind debts and a penchant for wild oats. Yet, fate intervened: he eloped with an heiress, the plain but impressible Miss Peg O’Neill. Together, they settl...

"A Vignette" is a short ghost story penned by the British author M.R. James. It first appeared in the November 1936 edition of the literary journal London Mercury, five months after James' passing. At just over 2,000 words, it is the shortest of his stories and, intriguingly, the last one he wrote. The story follows an unnamed narrator who recalls a chilling childhood encounter with a ghostly p...

Fantastic Chris, with fall moving in are we going to get more and more?
All through the winter, Kari!
You really are spoiling us at the moment Chris!Thankyou for all your hard work for us .
So nice of you, Claire. This was one of my earlier narrations when I first started. Because of that, I have relaunched it as I have a wider audience who may not have seen it.
….I couldn’t help wondering how many boys of the “Stanley Judkin” variety James had taught before penning this story….Excellent reading!
Quite a few, I should think. I can imagine James putting the frighteners on scouts around the camp fire to ensure their obedience to the rules, and as well as entertaining them.
Fantastic reading Chris! This is a great story.
Thanks, as always, Kari!
My bedtime listening as I struggle to sleep. This is my favourite James tale, ooh shiver 😳
Hopefully, this story didn`t keep you up too late, Sue!
In very much enjoyed the story. Another great reading, Chris. Thank you.

You are welcome!
Excellent tale Chris, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, Kari!
That story was creepy. Caused me goosebumps. Thank you, Chris. Wonderful story.
Thanks, Lorraine, you`re welcome!
Good story. Much better that a story be told as written. To alter it in deference to any alleged superiority of current cultural norms is an unacceptable violation to the broader general reading public. Much better to not mention any potential spoiler in the title page/illustration.
Thanks, Bruce. Appreciated!
Being watched by a stranger whose intentions are unknowable is very creepy. The only ghost I’ve ever seen had that same fixed blank stare.
Wow! I`d love to hear about that!
That was dark story to be sure, but I enjoyed it. Another great story, Chris. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it, Lorraine. Thank you as always!
Interesting story. Thanks for upload.
….Such a cruel story….( I’d appreciate a warning if animal or child abuse occurs in a story )
I will do that in the future. Sorry. It appalled me also. I have also now included a warning in the description.
@@HauntedTalesofDarknessThanks, Chris

A great M.R. James story. Thank you, Chris.
Glad you enjoyed it, Lorraine. Thank you!
A wonderful favorite with a new narration. Well done! Thank You.
Many thanks!
Nice tale and narration.
Thanks for listening, really appreciated!
One of James's best, and I always think of this story when I visit Aldeburgh (Seaburgh here). Prescient too, as this was written in 1925, and he refers to Raedwald, whose existence was well known, but whose grave was later discovered in Sutton Hoo in 1939.
What I enjoy most with James`s descriptives, and historical knowlege is that all he saw and described is in plain sight today. Thanks for commenting Zhouz.
great
Thanks, Stephanie!
Thanks so much Chris!
You`re welcome, Claire!
Enjoying! Thank You, Chris
My pleasure!

Thank you!
Thank you Chris for another great reading. <3
You are so welcome, Kari!
This was thoroughly enjoyable_Thanx!
Thanks, Carole!
Menacing vibes to this story. Great job, Chris, and thank you.
My pleasure as always, Lorraine!
I like this story. I like the cute monkey in the thumbnail, but not for this story. It's supposed to be an evil demonic ape. Apes don't have tails, and they're much larger than monkeys. The monkey in the thumbnail is not a scary incorporeal ape, just a cute monkey with a tail. Anyway, this story is excellent.
And don`t I know it? LOL. Unfortunately, the AI refused to deliver an enraged ape (no matter how many times I tried) and gave me a monkey instead. And there he is. I'm pleased you enjoyed the story.
This practically sounds like a “AI.” Trash!
Treachery! What a family. Thank you for a great story, Chris.❤️
Glad you enjoyed it, Lorraine. Thanks for commenting. :)
A very negligent father-to place his daughter’s welfare in the hands of a brother he really didn’t know….Pride seems to have been his cardinal failing….Excellent story, and a slight departure from Le Fanu’s usual fare….
It is a great story, and thanks for commenting.
Very sinister!Loved this one, thanks Chris !👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Claire.
This is as a great story and beautifully read !
Thanks, Claire!
Enjoying your channel very much. Beautifully read. Thanks!
