This song was on a CD I could get as a pre-teen. I ripped it myself to upload it since I couldn't find it anywhere else, and this song saved my life. Full disclosure: I used whatever I could at that time to escape reality, and cancer was the least of my problems. It's been a bit over fifteen years if not sixteen since this song came into my life. I was so innocent--innocence... I wonder if it was ever mine--I didn't even think to get curious about the most infamous use for the internet. When I did, I finally understood on some level why I NEEDED to escape even if so many horrible, visceral circumstances clouded the real root of that reason; because the only way I could control my reality was through losing myself in my music and in moments I could own that no, I'll never let go. I didn't even understand what this song was about, but it helped me fall all the way down, deep down into the rabbit hole I'd been pushed into until I can now say I'm out. I'm never fantasizing about falling off an edge because I can't be pushed there, and every mask I ever tried to hide behind broke, shattered until all that was left was always gonna be me. I'm free. I'm still who I always remember being, even if I forgot for a long, long time. Yeah, I'm still the same OG, and while I had to be low key, I'm still alive--and you can tell by the way I use my walk, with every step I take and move I make: I promise to stay alive until my body gives out. I don't know how long that's gonna be because, well, cancer. Definitely sucks, but back then, I felt comfort after years of pain by perceiving that as: "at least now I can have peace since all the adults around me think big words mean I'm creative and 'gifted,' and if chemo gets too rough, I have a reason to choose my death. I can choose peace, at last." But if I could get where I am now, so can every single person reading this comment--anyone can survive and refuse to give in to circumstances beyond their control through nonviolent ways of protecting themselves until they can get to a place where they can be safe and then elect to work through negative conditioning and thought patterns if or when they're ready. No matter how young or old, you can always decide who are you are; who you want to be; what you want to work on; and commit to self-improvement to love both others and, ultimately, yourself. It's okay to escape. Just remember: reality can be beautiful, you just have to be able to be in a place to where you can take the wheel and choose your route. A calculated move backwards to propel yourself forward the rest of your life is never a loss: it's the best thing you could ever do for yourself. You gotta gather up what you need, you gotta choose a direction. And if you can find the right moment: go. Know when to fold em, hold em, walk away, and if you have to, run. Your demons might be able to swim, but you can swim faster if it means yeeting yourself out of the Bermuda triangle. You just have to make a choice. You, and only you. My choice right now is to laugh at the copyright... thing on this video. Not that weird of a flex since heaven holds a sense of wonder, and so many of us wish that we could've gotten caught up when the rage in us had subsided. But silence, well... like cancer, it grows. It's unnatural. It's dangerous. And by all metrics, I never should have been able to speak more than two hours a day after something like seven-ish hours having my throat carved out twice--but I learned how to work with that and can sustain 20 hours of talking before I need to rest my voice. To all the lovers out there who've ever had to hide their earbuds just to escape because there's no other way: there is hope. There is help. There is love to be found in the family you can create through the relationships you invest in. You can learn something from every negative experience if you choose to reframe it in a better light after enough time and distance. Ask questions, and solve problems by learning how to ask the right questions. Establish healthy boundaries, and welcome constructive discussion. It's okay to be afraid, but don't let fear motivate you. You're never alone. Never give up, because as long as you love yourself and commit to forward momentum every day, you are more deserving and worthy of love from anyone who dares to gift you love in whatever language they can. And never surrender, because once you do that, you admit you have a stake in a war I guarantee you didn't sign up for. Stay safe. Stay alive. And never forget the beauty of music like this.
